Mr.
Barney Brown, age 91, native and lifelong resident of Blairsville,
passed away
Thursday, October 2, 2008, in Union County Nursing Home in Blairsville. Mr. Brown was a member of old Liberty Baptist
Church. Mr. Brown had been preceded in
death by his wife of almost 70 years,
Northa Pauline
King Brown; his parents, Henry and Celestie Brown; sister, Cleo B.
Hooper;
brothers: Elbert, Lewis, Emory, Harmon, Clayton and Paul.
Surviving
family members include: daughter, Marie Brown; son and daughter-in-law,
Ray and
Alwayne Brown, all of Blairsville; sisters: Connie b. Galloway, Frankie
B.
Dunnaway, Ruby B. Sexton, Ellen B. Collins, Ethel B. Self; brother,
Homer
Brown; granddaughter and friend, Cindy Brown and jerry hunter;
step-grandson,
Jason Silvers; step-great grandson, Joshua Silvers.
Funeral
services were held Saturday, October 4, 2008 at 2 p.m. from the chapel
of
Cochran Funeral Home with Rev. Harley Hunter, and Rev. Dwayne Patterson
officiating. Music was provided by Old
Liberty Baptist
Church Choir. Interment will follow in
New Liberty Baptist Church Cemetery. The
following gentlemen were requested to serve as pallbearers: Junior
Brown, Leon
Brown, Carroll Brown, Toby Collins, Freddy Collins, Calvin
Collins.
The family
received friends Friday, October 3, from 5 until 8 p.m. at the funeral
home.
Contributions
may be made to old Liberty Baptist Church, or to New Liberty Baptist
Church, in
memory of Barney Brown.

Mr.
Gerald
M. La Valley age 81 of Rothgeb Ridge Rd., formerly of W. Palm beach, FL
went to
be with the Lord on Friday Oct. 3, 2008 from his home.
Mr. La Valley was born on may
20, 1927 in Detroit, MI, the son of the late Maxime La Valley and the
late Mary
DeLosh La Valley. He was a veteran of
the US Navy of WWII. Gerald was a singer
and performed locally. His friends and
fans referred to him as their “Old Blue Eyes of the Mountains”. He sang at many churches and Christian groups
in the area and local events. He was
part of the Hiawassee on the Square Jazz Night and also of the OASIS
Lunch
Programs at First United Methodist Church of Blairsville.
He was a loving husband and father. Mr.
La Valley was a member of the Blairsville
First Baptist Church.
Surviving
Mr. La Valley are his loving wife of twenty six years, Patricia Carter
La
Valley of Blairsville, three sons and daughters-in-law, martin and
Anita La
Valley of Royal Palm Beach, FL, Kenneth and Cher La Valley of lake
Worth, FL,
Roger and Helen La Valley of Deland, FL, one brother and sister-in-law,
Richard
and Jeanne La Valley of Riviera beach, FL and also of Corning, AK, five
grandchildren, Shelly Brown, Christa Scruggs, Corbin La Valley, John
Carl Brown
and Celina Scholl, six great grandchildren, Austin, Logan, Emily,
Tyler, Dylan
and Juliana, many other relatives and friends also survive.
A memorial
service will be held on Saturday Oct. 18, 2008 at 11 a.m. from the
Mountain
View Chapel with the rev. Dick Stillwell officiating.
Special music will be presented by Bill Carter and
Elaine Moss. In lieu of flowers if you
wish, the family requests that memorials may be made to united Hospice
of Blue
Ridge in memory of Mr. La Valley. The
family will meet with friends at the funeral home on Saturday from
10-11 a.m.

Mrs.
Elsie Margaret Payne, age 79, of Flowery Branch, GA, formerly of
Blairsville,
GA, passed away Monday, September 29, 2008 at Northeast Georgia Medical
Center
in Gainesville. Mrs. Payne was born
Friday, June 7, 1929 in Union County, GA, to the late John Deyton and
the late
Maggie Rurie Self Deyton. She was a
member of Liberty Baptist Church.
Besides her parents, Mrs. Payne had been preceded in death by a
sister,
Alma Panter; and two brothers, Henry Deyton and David Deyton.
Survivors
include her loving husband of 64 years: James Edward Payne of Flowery Branch;
daughter, Mary Frances Pitts; son, James Edward Payne, both of Flowery
Branch;
daughter, Martha Mildred Whited of Gillsville, GA; son, Jessie Wade
Payne of
Lula, GA; daughter, Lori Lynn Stewart of Gainesville, GA; sisters,
Corlee
Carpenter and Mary Jane Weaver, both of Blairsville, GA; sister, Louise
Everett
of Buford, GA; and sister, Sudie Belle Bingham of Flowery Branch. 23 Grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren, and
other friends and relatives also survive.
Funeral
services were held Wednesday, October 1, 2008 at 2 PM from the Chapel
of
Cochran Funeral Home with the Rev. Jason Walls officiating. Interment followed in Union Memory Gardens
Cemetery in Blairsville. Serving as
pallbearers were the following gentlemen: Jason Payne, Jeff Jones,
Jeremy
Woodall, Justin Payne, Claude Everett, and John Payne.
Serving as an honorary pallbearer was Tracy
Vaughn.
The family
received friends at the funeral home from 6-9 PM, Tuesday, September 30.

Dennis
“Hambone” Garrett, age 55, of Blairsville, GA, passed
away Wednesday, October 1, 2008 at Union General Hospital in
Blairsville. Dennis was born Monday, July
6, 1953 in Towns
County, GA, to the late Jim Garrett and the late Grace Addington
Garrett. He was a master carpenter, and
worked in
housing construction.
Survivors
include his wife, Barbara Deaver Garrett of Blairsville; daughter,
Stacy
Garrett Corn of Blairsville; son & daughter-in-law, Timmy &
Michelle
Duckworth of Blairsville; step-son, Dale Duckworth of Monroe, Georgia;
brother,
Harold Garrett of McDonough, GA; brother, Denver Garrett; sister, Doris
McGaha,
brother, Roger “Gomer” Garrett, all of Blairsville; grandchildren:
Kayla Corn,
Josh Corn, Kaitlyn Kelly, Ashley Stephens, Maranda Stephens, Alexus
Duckworth,
and Kimber Duckworth. Dennis was
preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jim Garrett. many other
relatives
and friends also survive.

Funeral Home with the Rev. Bryan Mason, and Gerald Owenby officiating. Interment followed in ivy Log Baptist Church

Mr.
Robert
Dewey Burnett, age 88, of Suches, GA; passed away Monday, September 29,
2008 at
his home. Mr. Burnett was born Monday,
April 26, 1920 in Union County, GA to the late Emanuel Burnett and the
late Elizabeth
Cain Burnett. A lifelong resident of
Union County, he was a member and deacon of Zion Baptist Church in
Suches. Mr. Burnett was a veteran of the
Army Air
Corps during World War II, and was mainly stationed in India. He was preceded in death by his wife, Clara
Jane Hood Burnett; and a daughter, Opal Burnett.
Surviving
family members include: son, Robert Burnett of Suches; daughter,
Patricia
Burnett, also of Suches; daughter, Gladys Jones of Dahlonega, GA; four
grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren; many other relatives and
friends
also survive.
Funeral
services were held Thursday, October 2, 2008 at 2 PM from the Zion
Baptist
Church with Rev. Michael Wilkes officiating.
Music was provided by Patsy Thomas.
Interment followed in Zion Baptist Church Cemetery.
Serving as pallbearers were the following
gentlemen: Danny Burnett, Junior Burnett, Steve Lewis, Bob Williams,
Clay
Williams, and Zach Williams. Honorary
pallbearers included: Adam Williams, and Jack Burnett.
