            Charles Taylor Owenby, age 73, of Covington, GA, passed away on Thursday, October 3, 2013 at his home.

            Charles was born in Blairsville, GA, on January 2, 1940, a son of the late Dwight Charlie Owenby and the late Fannie Henson Owenby. Charles moved to Atlanta in 1959, and then to Covington in 1971. He was an over the road trucker for 28 years. He attended Solid Rock Baptist Church in Covington. Charles loved his black coffee, and was an avid gardener and sports fan. He loved his family and was at his happiest when all of his family was gathered together at home. He will be remembered for being a loving and wonderful husband, father and grandfather. Preceding him in death besides his parents, was a sister, Joy Owenby Garrett; and two brothers, Guy Owenby and William Dwight "Billy" Owenby.

            Charles will be lovingly remembered by all who knew him, and missed most especially by his loving family: his wife, Nina Mason Owenby, of Covington; a son, Charles Stephen Owenby, of Covington; three daughters and sons-in-law: Pamela Owenby Forrest and Steve Forrest, of Loganville, GA; Vicki Owenby Bailey and Garrick Bailey, of Gainesville, GA; and Valerie Owenby Blankenship and Allen Blankenship, of Loganville, GA; brothers: Lucky Boyd Owenby; Danny (Debbie) Owenby; Ricky (Traci) Owenby; Ronnie (Debbie) Owenby; sisters: Betty Rhodes (Kenneth Jenkins); Joan (Charles) Totherow; Judy (Ronnie) Kelley; all of Blairsville; Linda (Ricky) Towe, of Oakwood, GA; and Brenda Davenport and Randy Mosteller, of Blairsville; grandchildren: Andrew and Brynn Middlebrooks, Taylor Owenby, Ashton Bailey, Alana Bailey, Alyssa Forrest, Reeves Blankenship, Emily Blankenship, and Rebecca Blankenship. Many other nieces and nephews also survive.

            Funeral services were held on Sunday, October 6, 2013, at 3 p.m., in the Chapel of Cochran Funeral Home in Blairsville with Pastor Mike Franklin officiating. Special music was presented by Danita and Michael Kennedy, accompanied by Patsy Davenport. Serving as pallbearers were the following gentlemen: Mike Parker, Tim Collins, Todd Collins, Tracy Collins, William Owenby, Terry Kelley, Chad Towe, Kyle Owenby, Kolt Owenby, and Kody Owenby. Burial was in Ebenezer Baptist Church Cemetery. Visitation was held at the funeral home on Sunday, October 6, 2013, starting at 12 noon before the services.

            Mr. Garland Ralph Alley, age 93, of Wesley Mountain Dr., Blairsville passed away Friday, October 4, 2013 in Union County Nursing Home following an extended illness. He was born March 9, 1920 in Brady, TX to the late John Alford and Alva Pearce (Rasco) Alley. Mr. Alley was a WWII U. S. Army veteran. He moved here 5 years ago from Galveston, TX. He was a person that always helped other people. Mr. Alley was preceded in death by his wife, Rosamond Parker Alley in 2013 and a daughter, Patsy Sharon Pillsbury. His faith was Salvationist.

            Survivors include brother-in-law, Franklin Parker and his wife Lynda of Murphy, NC, grandchildren, Hugh Augustus Pillsbury and Susan Pillsbury.

            No services are planned at this time. In lieu of flowers make memorials to the Gideon’s International in Mr. Alley’s memory.

charles raymond lawson

 

            Mr. Charles Raymond Lawson, age 76, of Blairsville, GA, passed away Wednesday, October 2, 2013, at his home following an extended illness.

            Charles was born in Ballground, GA, on December 10, 1936, a son of the late William Jake Lawson and the late Alice Venita Brown Lawson. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, and attained the rank of Sergeant. Charles worked for approximately 50 years in the florist business, and was the owner of Union County Florist in Blairsville. After his retirement, he worked part-time with Resthaven Florist. He was a member of the House of Prayer Interdenominational Church in Blairsville. Charles had been preceded in death by: his parents; sisters, Martha Brown, JoAnn Eason, and Peggie Bracken; brothers: William T. Lawson, Jack Benson Lawson, and Larry Alexander Lawson.

            Charles will be greatly missed by all who knew him. He leaves behind family members and friends who will treasure his memory: daughter, Michele Webb, of Stockbridge, GA; grandson, Justin Webb; sister-in-law, June Fairchild, of West Palm Beach, FL; special friends, Randy Haines, of Blairsville, and Tom Dowdy, also of Blairsville; several nieces and nephews and many other relatives also survive.

            Funeral services were held on Friday, October 4, 2013, at 2 p.m., in the Chapel of Cochran Funeral Home of Blairsville, with Rev. Jan Devereaux officiating. Special music was presented by Alan Kendall. The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Curtis Haines, Larry Bowling, Larry Perry, Ronnie Coker, Danny Smith, and Keith Bryant. Serving as honorary pallbearers were the following gentlemen: Daniel Shumaker, Robert Buchanan, and Danny Haines. Mary Conley and Sara Smith served as honorary escort to the family. Burial was in Union Memory Gardens Cemetery.

            Visitation was held at Cochran Funeral Home on Friday, the same day of the service, starting at 12:30 and lasting until time for the funeral service to start.

            Mrs. Martha Jane Kelley White, age 47, of St. Hwy. 325, Blairsville passed away Sunday, September 29, 2013 at Northeast Georgia Medical Center following an extended illness. She was born in Blairsville to the late Jasper and Mary Fleming Kelley. She graduated Union County High School in 1985. Martha enjoyed horses and her friends and loved life. She was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church.

            Survivors include her companion, Doug Hughes, sisters, Patricia and Steve Carver, Mona and Leslie Groves, brothers, Lewis and Melissa Kelley, Travis and Pam Kelley and Steve Kelley all of Blairsville, several nieces, nephews and many other relatives and friends.

            Funeral services were held Wednesday, October 2, 2013 at 2 p.m. at Mountain View Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Jerry Helton officiating. Music by Delga Cox. Pallbearers were Joey Swanson, Joshua Stroud, Ian Kelley, Matt Jones, Jarred Kelley, Seth Kelley and Jacob Kelley. Interment followed in Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Cemetery. The family received friends at the funeral home Tuesday evening from 6 until 9 p.m. In lieu of flowers the family request memorial donations be make (sic) to help defray expenses.

eugene stark

 

            Mr. Eugene Stark, age 86, of Blairsville, GA passed away Sunday, September 29, 2013 at Chatuge Regional Hospital following an extended illness. He was born January 14, 1927 in Kansas City, KS to the late Harry and Mary Curtis Stark. Mr. Stark was a U.S. Naval Air Corps WWII Veteran and was a Gunner on the Hell Diver plane.  He retired after serving as National Sales Manager for Sears after a long career.  His life slogan was “do the best with what you have wherever you are, to the glory of God”. He truly was a testimony to the love of God and the Lord Jesus Christ. Mr. Stark was preceded in death by his wife, Ethel Marie Roberts Stark and son, Donald Eugene Stark both in 2012, brothers, Robert Stark and Warren Stark and sister, Norma Jean Stark. He was an Ordained Deacon for 65 years. Before moving to Blairsville three years ago from Dunwoody he had been a member of Dunwoody Baptist Church for 47 years.  For the last three years he had been a member of Fellowship of the Hills Church in Blairsville, a congregation he dearly loved who dearly loved him. He told everyone ”Fellowship” was the perfect name for the church as the members truly are a fellowship.

            Survivors include daughters: Diane Stark Stephens of Blairsville, GA  and Sharon Greye of Savannah, GA; sister Charlene Vest of Texas, grandchildren: Jeff Stark, Kenneth Stephens, Ian Greye, Vanya Greye and Ashley Stephens; great grandchildren: Nate, Andrew and Mary Grace; several nieces, nephews and many other relatives and friends.

            A memorial service is planned for a later date.  In lieu of flowers make memorial donations to the Fellowship of the Hills Church, 27 Pinebrook Drive, (PO Box 2271), Blairsville, GA  30514.

            Mrs. Marion Lowe Helms, age 81, of Old Skeenah Gap Road, Suches, GA passed away Tuesday, October 1, 2013 at her home following an extended illness. She was born April 25, 1932 in Cornelia, GA to the late John Jackson Lowe and the late Gertrude Nettie Harden Lowe. She had lived here for the past six years moving here from Lithonia, GA. Mrs. Helms loved her Lord, her husband of 62 years, children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She loved recipes and traveling out West to visit her grandchildren. Mrs. Helms was preceded in death by a brother, Charles Lowe, grandson, Christopher Patterson, son, David Bryant Helms. She was a member of Beracah Baptist Church.

            Survivors include her husband Doug Helms of Suches, GA, children: Pastor Richard and Karen Helms of Suches, GA, Carol and Bill Patterson of Winder, GA and Donna and Greg King of Phoenix, AZ; brother, John Lowe, Jr. of Baldwin, GA; sister-in-law, Barbara Helms Wickman of Remlap, AL; grandchildren: Daniel Helms, Amber Bagwell, Nathan Helms, Rebecca Panyko, Allison Barry, Whitney Neier and Karis Helms.; her great grandchildren: Matthew, Abbie, Josiah, Owen, Sam, Braxton, Mollie, Vaughn, Harrison, Taylor, and ‘one on the way’, due to be born on Marion’s birthday.

            Funeral services were held Saturday, October 5, 2013 at 1 p.m. at Mountain View Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Richard Helms officiating. Music by Donna King and John and Shelley Sweatte. Pallbearers were Nathan Helms, Joel Almaroad, Devin Barry, James Bagwell, and honorary pallbearer, Daniel Helms. Interment was in Eternal Hills Memory Gardens in Snellville, GA on Sunday, October 6, 2013 at 3 p.m. The family received friends at the funeral home on Saturday, from 12 until 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers make memorial donations to the Women’s Enrichment Center of Union County or to the Gideons.

            Mr. Robert Junior "Doc" Ramsey age 74 of Cavender Gap Rd. Suches passed away peacefully on Saturday, October 5, 2013 at his home following an extended illness. Mr. Ramsey was born on April 24, 1939 in Sevierville, TN., the son of the late Robert Ramsey and the late Roxanne Phillips Ramsey. Doc was a loving husband, father, brother, grandfather and great grandfather. He loved being around his family and his church. He was preceded in death by his parents and also three brothers, Densil, Hal and Buddy Ramsey. Mr. Ramsey was a faithful member of Corinth Baptist Church.

            Surviving Mr. Ramsey are his loving wife of forty-seven years ,Joyce Grizzle Ramsey of Suches, two sons and daughters-in-law, Charles (Punk) and Sheila Grizzle of Dahlonega, Clayton and Judy Ramsey of Blue Ridge, two daughters and one son-in-law, Shelia and John Jenkins of Gainesville, Sherry Raper of Blue Ridge, seven Grandchildren (sic) Robert & Charlee Grizzle of Shelbyville, TN Caleb and Nicholas Ramsey of Blue Ridge, Josh Jenkins of Gainesville, Sharon and Will Ellis of Gainesville, BJ. and Michael Raper of Blue Ridge, one great grandson Alex Raper of Ellijay, one brother and sister in law, Clayton and Mary Frances Ramsey of Blairsville, two sisters and one brother-in-law, Barbara and Jerry Stalcup of Warne, NC., Shirley Brown of Blairsville, his favorite dog, Doodles, many other relatives and friends also survive.

            Funeral services were held on Tuesday October 8, 2013 at 2 p.m. from the Mountain View Chapel with the Rev. Ray Potts and Rev. Rudy Tribble officiating. Graveside prayer by Doyle Carder. Special music was presented by Mike Pardue . The following gentleman served as pallbearers, Bill Coker, Jimmy Snider, Vaughn Grizzle, Doyle Carder, Robert Bridges and Kenneth Grizzle. Serving as honorary pallbearers were, Josh Jenkins, Caleb Ramsey, Nicholas Ramsey, Robert Grizzle, BJ. Raper, Will Ellis, Jack Hawkins Joel Gooch, Frank Wood and Paul Carder. Interment followed in the Corinth Baptist Church Cemetery. Flowers are accepted or if you wish, the family requests that donations may be made to Corinth Baptist Church in Mr. Ramsey’s memory. The family met with friends at the funeral home on Monday evening from 6-9 p.m.

            Mr. Richard Evans, age 83, of Blairsville, GA, passed away on Friday evening, October 4, 2013 in Union County Nursing Home in Blairsville.

            Mr. Evans was born in Tennessee on February 2, 1930 and lived his entire life in this area. He was a member of Sugar Hill Baptist Church in Suches. Mr. Evans enjoyed having a vegetable garden and fishing. He was preceded in death by his wife, Inda Helton Evans, and a son, Arlen Evans, and son Ray Evans.

            Surviving family members include a daughter, Arlene Hughes; and a son, Larry Evans; a sister, Judy Panter, sister, Helen Bennett; and a grandson, Earl Hughes.

            Graveside services for Mr. Evans were held on Monday, October 7, 2013, at 11 a.m., in Sugar Hill Cemetery. Visitation for Mr. Evans was held at Cochran Funeral Home on Sunday evening, October 6, 2013, between the hours of 6 until 8 p.m.

            The family wishes to express their appreciation to Union County Nursing Home staff, who took such great care of Mr. Evans. Any memorial contributions may be directed to the Union County Nursing Home.

mavis knowles

 

            Mrs. Mavis Knowles, age 75, of Blairsville, passed away Friday evening, October 4, 2013, at her home.

            Mrs. Knowles was born on April 27, 1938 in Leicester, England, a daughter of the late Francis Edward Saunders and the late Florence Mae Turner Saunders. She grew up during the war years remembering trucks full of American Soldiers as they drove through the village on their way to the Normandy invasion. She met her husband, Louis, while he served in the Air Force and they returned to Georgia to start their family and life together. While living in Missouri, Mavis became a U.S. citizen of which she was enormously proud. Mavis worked at several jobs and retired from the Postal Service as a Rural Letter Carrier. It was her favorite job as it allowed her to meet, talk and make friends with many people. She enjoyed helping others, giving of herself and never asked of anything in return. She enjoyed square dancing, traveling our country, sewing and making her bread pudding for First Sunday dinner at Choestoe Church. She loved her children and grandchildren very much.

            Mavis will be remembered by the many friends she has made over the years living and working in Florida. After retiring and moving to Blairsville she met and made more friends who held a special place in her heart. She will be missed by her husband, Louis; daughters and sons-in-law, Gina & Mike Turner and Elizabeth & Wayne Fann; son and daughter-in-law, Doug & Patricia Knowles. Also sharing in her legacy are granddaughters, Jennifer (Steven), Erika (Sean), Sara and Rebecca; grandsons, Sean (Sunny) and Colin (Tiara); and great grandchildren, Tristan, Manderley and Masen.

            Memorial services will be held on Saturday, October 12, 2013, at 11 a.m., in the Old Sanctuary of Choestoe Baptist Church. The family will meet with friends on Saturday, starting at 10 a.m. until the service hour.

            Flowers are being accepted; however, if you wish, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, www.cancer.org.
