Mrs.
Joyce Ann smith, age 78, a resident of
Blairsville for over 15 years, entered her rest in the Lord on Friday,
October
7, 2010 at her home following an extended illness.
Mrs. Smith was born on June 28, 1932 in
Battle Creek, MI, the daughter of the late Lawrence Graves and Teresa
Downs
Graves. Joyce spent her final days with
her children, praising the Lord in song and sweet fellowship, walking
in the
grace of God. Joyce loved spending time
with her family and hosting family gatherings, quilting, traveling, and
playing
cards with the girls. She was always
generous to her family, friends, and even strangers.
She was a loving mother, sister, grandmother,
great-grandmother and a friend to many.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her first husband, Don
Paul
LeSage, who passed away in 1965, and her husband, Robert E. Smith who
passed
away in 2003. Mrs. Smith was a member of
St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church.
Surviving Mrs. Smith are five
children: Mark and Pattie LeSage of Canton, GA, Scott and Melissa
LeSage of
Bellview, FL, Lori and Martin Drummond of Blairsville, GA and Miami,
FL, Dale Smith
of Maryville, TN, Keith and Justine Smith of Canton, GA; one sister,
Janet
Kravat of Hammond, LA; twelve grandchildren: Jennifer Horn, Robert and
Larry
Moshier, Christopher Pierno and Brian LeSage, Aaron, Nicole, Hailey,
Garrett
and Asa LeSage, Hannah and Cameron Smith; two great grandchildren,
Jayden and
Jordan Pierno; and many other relatives and friends.
A memorial celebration was held on
Sunday, October 10 from 6 – 8 p.m. at Mountain View Funeral Home of
Blairsville. A Funeral Mass was held on
Monday, October 11 at 10 a.m. at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church
with
Father Richard Wise officiating. The
following gentlemen served as honorary pallbearers, Robert and Larry
Moshier,
Christopher Pierno, Brian LeSage, Aaron LeSage, and Jim bob Horn. Interment followed in St. Clares Memorial
Gardens.
In lieu
of flowers, please
make a gift in Mrs. Smith’s memory to Van Hook School, (864 Volunteer
Drive
Maryville, TN 37801), a home for adults with special needs where her
son Dale
resides or to The American Cancer Society.

Retired
Delta Air Lines Captain, Francis
(Sonny) McDowall, age 89, of Blairsville, GA, formerly of Lawrenceville
passed
away on Sept. 25, 2010 in the Union General Hospital.
Mr. McDowall was born on July 19, 1921 in
Evansville, IN, the son of the late John Kennedy McDowall and the late
Frances
Surmann McDowall. Francis was raised in
Jackson, MS. He attended Auburn
University before enlisting as a pilot in the US Navy during WWII. He was a pilot with Delta Air Lines from
1945-1981 beginning his service flying the CD-3 and ending with the
L10-11 as
well as serving as Chief Pilot in Atlanta for a four year period. Mr. McDowall was an active volunteer in the
Gwinnett County community and was named Citizen of the Year in 1996 by
the
Gwinnett Chamber of Commerce. He
continued being active after the move to union County, serving on the
Community
Council of the Georgia Mountain Research and Education Center. He was a lifelong Presbyterian serving in
both Lawrenceville Presbyterian Church and later Mountain Presbyterian
Church. He was preceded in death by his
only son, Warrant Officer Francis McDowall, Jr. in 1969 and his wife of
68
years, Dana Nichols McDowall on Sept. 4, 2010.
Surviving Mr. McDowall are four
daughters and three sons-in-law, Catherine and Glen Henderson of
Blairsville,
Susan and Robert Dinwiddie of Monroe, GA, Elizabeth and Jim Belcher of
Greer,
SC, Lucy Wright McDowall of Blairsville, seven grandchildren, three
great-grandchildren, many other relatives and friends also survive.
A combined Memorial Service for Dana
and Sonny was held on Sept. 25 from Mountain Presbyterian Church,
Blairsville,
GA, with the Rev. Travis Adams and Dr. William Schotanus officiating.
Graveside services were held from
the Westview Cemetery in Atlanta with the Dr. William Schotanus
officiating. The family request that
memorials be made to Mountain Presbyterian Church of Blairsville or to
Lawrenceville Presbyterian Church in memory of the McDowalls.

Mrs.
Norma Fern Hunter, age 70, of
Blairsville and Hiawassee passed away Thursday morning October 7, 2010
at Union
General Hospital in Blairsville.
Norma was born Friday, April 12,
1940, in Peoria, Illinois, to the late Guy and Vivian (Shamo) Pudney. She had lived in this area since 1976, coming
here from Tooele, Utah. Norma had
attended Liberty Hill United Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Cecil Hunter in 1980
and sons,
Dewayne Edward Hunter in 1973 and Michael hunter in 2004.
Norma is survived by daughter,
Roxann Pudney of Nevada and daughter and son-in-law, Karen and G.W.
Brong of
Epworth, GA; son and daughter-in-law, Randy and Lillian Hunter of
Hiawassee,
Georgia; brothers, Junior Dalton of Nevada and James Ellison of Utah;
seven
grandchildren and several great grandchildren also survive.
No services are planned at this
time.

Mr. Jack
Dixon Smith, age 86, of
Blairsville, Georgia, formerly of Tallahassee, Florida, passed away
Saturday,
October 9, 2010, in Union General
Hospital in Blairsville.
Mr. Smith was born Friday, May 23,
1925, in Homerville, Georgia, a son of the late Herbert Smith and the
late Mary
Taylor Smith. Mr. Smith served in the
U.S. Naval Reserve. He had retired from
NASA after 30 years of service.
Surviving family members include his
loving wife of 66 years, Clara O’Quinn Smith; daughter and son-in-law,
Judy
Smith Nagel and Conrad Nagel, of Tallahassee, Florida; son, Herbert
Dixon
Smith, of Rockledge, Florida; and daughter and son-in-law, Sharon Smith
Wingertstahn and Mark Wingertstahn, of Blairsville; a sister, Gloria
Coleman,
of Lakeland, Florida; two brothers, Ted Smith, of Homerville, Georgia
and
Herman Brinkley, of Lakeland, Florida; ten grandchildren, eleven great
grandchildren, and two great great grandchildren also survive.
All services were conducted in
Valdosta, Georgia, with arrangements entrusted to McLane Funeral
Services.
