mr. ralph lee garrett

 

Mr. Ralph Lee Garrett, age 70, of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away Sunday, October 3, 1999, following a long illness.  Mr. Garrett was born in Union County, Georgia, on Saturday, April 13, 1929, a son of the late Dave Garrett and Mary Stover Garrett.  He was a retired Master Jet Aircraft Engine Technician.  Mr. Garrett lived and worked for many years in Indiana and Florida, but moved back to Georgia in 1987.  He was of the Church of Gad faith and was a member of the Allegheny Masonic Lode, #114, F&AM.

Surviving are his wife, Joyce Tipton Garrett, of the home; sons, Michael and Donald of Indiantown, Florida, and Steven Garrett of Ft. Pierce, Florida; daughters: Linda Fields of Loveland, CO; Joanne Cross of Indian Head, MD; and Rita Renaee Garrett, of Ft. Pierce, FL; step daughter, JoElle Kinsey of Hiawassee, GA; brother, Charles Garrett, of Indiantown, FL; sisters, Ruth Loftis, of Clover, SC, Bobbie Pugh, of Winston-Salem, NC; and Gwenda Dais of Cherryville,  NC, many grandchildren and great grandchildren also survive.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, October 6, 1999 at 2 p.m. from Zion Baptist Church, with the Rev. Willis Garrett and Rev. Ray Loftis officiating.  Special music was presented by Lena Shook and Gloria Griggs.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Brian Kinsey, Jack Byers, Steven Garrett, Benny Pugh, Michael and Donald Garrett.  Interment was in Zion Baptist Church Cemetery with graveside Masonic rites by members of Allegheny Masonic Lodge.

mrs. edna caroline fortenberry jones

 

Mrs. Edna Caroline Fortenberry Jones, age 89, of Marietta, Georgia, passed away Monday, October 11, 1999 following an extended illness.  Mrs. Jones was born in Union County, Georgia.  She was the daughter of the late John and Dovie Fortenberry.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Mr. Jewel Arnold Jones.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the Chapel of West Cobb Funeral Home, Marietta, Georgia, with the Rev. Hubert Woodward and Larry Rich officiating.  Interment will be at 4 p.m. at Mt. Pleasant #1 Church Cemetery in Blairsville, Georgia.  She will lie in state from 3 p.m. till time of Graveside services at Mt. Pleasant #1 Church.  She was a member of Welcome Grove Baptist Church in Marietta. 

Survivors include five daughters and son in laws: Mildred and Richard sellers, of Marietta, GA; Mable and Frank Hughes, of Marietta, GA; Myrtle and Bill Ross of Hiram, GA; Joyce and Junior Baldwin of Lithia Springs, GA; Linda and Allen Nichols of Young Harris, GA; five brothers and sisters: Marcus Fortenberry, of Pleaston, CA; Howard Fortenberry, of Gastonia, NC; Joe Fortenberry, of Binningham, AL; Louis Fortenberry, of Norcross, GA; W.P. Fortenberry, of Clearmont, GA; Grace Stephens and Ruth Jenkins both of Clearmont, GA; she is also survived by 9 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren and nieces and nephews.  The family will receive friends Tuesday from 1-3 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. at the West Cobb Funeral Home of Marietta in charge of the arrangements.

mrs. gertrude abercrombie thweatt

 

Mrs. Gertrude Abercrombie Thweatt, age 73, of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away Friday, October 8, 1999 in Union County Nursing Home in Blairsville.

Mrs. Thweatt was born in Union County, Georgia, on Wednesday, July 7, 1926, a daughter of the late Charlie Abercrombie and Callie Harkins Abercrombie.  She had lived in Columbus, Georgia, for many years, but moved back to Blairsville 15 years ago.  She was of the Baptist faith.  Mrs. Abercrombie had been preceded in death by her husband, Kermit Thweatt in 1984.

Surviving are a daughter and son in law, Shirley and John Evans, of Blairsville; brother, Garnie Abercrombie, of Blairsville; sister, Alma Little, of Vernon, Florida; and a grandson, John Evan, Jr., of Athens, GA.  Many other friends and relatives also survive.

Graveside services were held Sunday, October 10, 1999 at 2 p.m. from Harmony Grove Baptist Church Cemetery, with Rev. Willis Garrett officiating.  Special music was presented by Ken Young.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Kenneth, Larry and Barry Abercrombie, Chuck Johnson, Johnny Evans and Scott McKechnie.

mrs. catherine virginia kirby

 

Mrs. Catherine Virginia Kirby, age 85, of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away Wednesday, October 6, 1999, at her home.

Mrs. Kirby was a native of Powell County, Wyoming and was the daughter of the late John Curtis and Fern Elizabeth Sprague Curtis.  She was born on May 3, 1914.  Mrs. Kirby was the widow of the late Robert Clifton Kirby.  She has been living in the Blairsville area since June of 1999, coming here from Hebron, Indiana.  She was of the Methodist Faith.

Surviving are a son, Robert Ralph Kirby, of Port St. Lucie, Florida; and a daughter, Joan Johnson, of Blairsville, 6 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren also survive.

ms. radie bell beavers tanner morgan

 

Ms. Radie Bell Beavers Tanner Morgan, age 78, of the Gumlog Rd., Blairsville, Georgia, passed away on Monday, October 4, 1999 in the Union General Hospital following an extended illness.  She was born on June 8, 1921 in Cherokee County, North Carolina, the daughter of the late Herman beavers and the late Sarah Sneed Beavers.  She was a member of the Notla Baptist Church.  Ms. Morgan was preceded in death by her husband Hubert Morgan who passed away in 1992.

Survivors include two daughters, Delores Nation of Murphy, NC and Shirley Taylor of Bessemer, NC., two sons, Weldon Tanner of Gastonia, NC, and Ralph Tanner of Hayesville, NC; six brothers, Harley, Wayne, Robert, Clinton and Wilford Beavers, all of Murphy, NC, and Horace Beavers of Gastonia, NC.; twelve grandchildren and eighteen great grandchildren, many relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, October 8, 1999 at 2 p.m. from the Chapel of mountain View Funeral Home in Blairsville with the Rev. Erosie Robertson and the Rev. Hoyt Brown officiating.  Special music was presented by the Tri State Quartet.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Noah Tanner, Tim Tanner, Gregg Collins, Kenny Swanson, John Payne, Keith Beavers and Eddie Tanner.  Interment followed in the Bellview Community Cemetery in Murphy, NC

mr. ronnie jack rogers

 

Mr. Ronnie Jack Rogers, age 49, of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away Thursday, October 7, 1999 at his home.

Mr. Rogers was born in Cherokee County, North Carolina, on Friday, March 31, 1950.  He was preceded in death by his mother, Anna Lou Butts Rogers.

Survivors include his father, Jack Rogers, of Blairsville; sister and brother in law, Judy and Michael Rogers, of Dallas, GA; nephews: Brandon and Bradley Rogers; many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held Saturday, October 9, 1999 at 3 p.m. from the chapel of Cochran Funeral Home of Blairsville, with rev. BA Buchanan officiating.  Special music was presented by Lewis Henderson and The Faith Singers.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Brandon Rogers, J.E. Corn, Jeff Butts, Bradley Rogers, Robert and James Butts.  Interment was in Union memory Gardens Cemetery.

mr. fred edgar williams iv (cooper)

 

Mr. Fred Edgar Williams IV (Cooper), age 12, of Waynesville, Georgia, passed away Sunday, October 3.  He was born in Blairsville on Feb. 5, 1987.  He was a 6th grader at Brantky Jr High.  He was a member of the 4-H Club and Science Club.

Survivors include his mother and stepfather, Larry and Frankie Cooper, of Waynesville, GA; and father Freed Williams III of Blairsville, GA.  He has one brother, Justin Helton of Blairsville, GA.  He is also survived by his grandmother, “Mama” Cooper of Marietta, GA; several aunts, uncles and cousins.  He was the grandson of the late Donald Helton, of Cedertown, GA, Rosita Helton of Blairsville, GA and the late Fred Williams II and Selma Williams of Blairsville, GA.

Funeral services were held Thursday, October 7, 1999 at 10 a.m. at St. Stephens Methodist Church of Marietta, GA.  The Rev. Claude Smithmeier and Richard Harris officiated.  We love you and miss you.
