mary elizabeth postel stover wheeler
Mr., Mary
Elizabeth Postel Stover Wheeler, better known as Granny Wheeler or Aunt
Mary
was a mid-wife who ketched or helped deliver over a thousand babies. Born September 30, 1863, she spent most of
her life in the mountains near Suches, GA.
She moved to Suches after her first husband disappeared. She brought with her two children, a milk
cow, a sow, a bushel of potatoes, and a willingness to help others. From her one room log cabin, she would travel
the mountains ketchin’ babies. At one
time being for three weeks. Sometimes
she would receive .50 to $1 per child, sometimes a slab of meat or a
basket of
corn and sometimes nothing but the joy of bringing a new life into the
world.
On April
26, 1956 at the age of 92, Granny Wheeler left this world.
To help insure she will never be forgotten,
the young men at Camp E-Ma-Laku have set up a memorial to this
remarkable woman
near the Suches Medical Center.
