Mr. willard worth garrett

 

Mr. Willard Worth Garret, age 75, native of Union County, Georgia, passed away Tuesday, October 8, 2002 at his home following an extended illness.

Mr. Garrett was born on Thursday, October 14, 1926, a son of the late John Henry Garrett and Mary Harkins Garrett.  He lived in DeLeon Springs, Florida during the years of 1956-1990.  While living in DeLeon Springs, he served for 8 years as fire chief for the Volunteer Fire Department there.  Also in Florida he was a foreman with Theodore Strawn, Inc., citrus growers, for 38 years.  During the years of 1990-2002 he lived in Blairsville and delivered Meals on Wheels for 10 years.  Mr. Garrett was preceded in death by a son, James Willard Garrett and a brother Leaford Garrett.

Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth Gibbs Garrett of Blairsville; daughter and son-in-law, Margaret and Steve Rupert of Mayetta, Kansas; daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Andy Brown of Orange City, Florida; son, John Garrett of Deland, Florida; six sisters, Essie Davis of Blairsville, Lizzie Grizzle and Helen Abercrombie, both of Suches, Georgia, Hattie Bell Garrett of Blairsville, Edith Bradford of Calhoun, Georgia,; Shelby Jenkins of Bunnell, Florida; and a brother, John Harold Garrett, of Blairsville; grandchildren, Kimberly Ramirez, Kristopher Pope, Shelly Brown, and Kenny Brown; great grandson, Alex Ramirez; many friends and other relatives also survive.

Funeral services were held Saturday, October 12, 2002 at 2 pm from the chapel of Cochran Funeral Home with Mr. I.T. Harkins officiating.  Burial was Tuesday, October 15, 2002 at 11 am form Pinehurst Cemetery in DeLeon Springs, Florida.

The family has suggested memorials could be made to Georgia Mountains Hospice, P.O. Box 580, Jasper, Georgia 30143.

pastor james brock

 

Pastor James Brock, 59, beloved pastor of Faith Baptist Church in Blairsville, went home to be with his Lord on Friday, October 11, 2002.

Pastor Brock was born Monday, December 5, 1942, in Charleston, South Carolina, a son of the late James Wesley Brock, Sr., and Frances Davenport Vann Brock.  He was a veteran of the U.S. Marines.  Before moving to Blairsville Preacher Brock lived in Athens, Georgia; Brandon, Florida; and Hollywood, Florida.  He had served as the pastor of Faith Baptist Church since the founding in 1975.  pastor Brock ministered not only to his church members, but the whole community and through missions, local and worldwide.

Survivors include his loving wife, Sandra Cowen Brock, of their home in Young Harris, Georgia; son and daughter –in-law, Josh and Elizabeth Brock of Blairsville; son and daughter-in-law, Josh and Elizabeth Brock of Blairsville; son and daughter-in-law, Vann and Vanessa Brock, also of Blairsville; son, Zachary, and daughters Susan and Julie, all of the home; three sisters, Becky Reynolds, and Kathy Napier, both of Deltona, Florida and Gay Reece of Ellenton, Florida; many other relatives, church family and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held Sunday, October 13, 2002 at 2 pm from Faith Baptist Church with Rev. Mark Ernst, Dr. John Reynolds, Rev. Jerry Helton and Rev. Jerry Karnes officiating.  Special music was presented by Dr. Tracy Edwards and June Caldwell.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: David Hobby, Rick Klopp, Jimmy Davis, Patrick Neely, George Bumpus, and Ernest Rice.  Interment was in Union Memory Gardens Cemetery.

If you wish, the family has suggested memorial contributions may be made to any charity that furthers God’s kingdom.

mr. james ray stephens

 

Mr. James Ray Stephens, age 75, of Lawrence Road, Blairsville, passed away on Friday, October 11, 2002 at his residence following a brief illness.  MR. Stephens was born on October 19, 1926 in Sumter County, FL, the son of the late Dennis Stephens and Lillie Clemons Stephens.  MR. Stephens had made his home in Blairsville for the past twenty two years, moving here from Kissimmee, FL.  HE was a member of the Masonic Lodge and a lifetime member of the VFW.  Mr. Stephens was of the Baptist Faith.

Surviving Mr. Stephens are his loving wife of forty years, Helen Barbier Stephens of Blairsville; mother, Lillie Stephens of Florida; three children, Tammy Lynn Stephens of FL, Terry Stephens of NC, Marsha Ann Dandif of FL; two sisters, Laverne Douglas of Groveland, FL, Doris Railey of Jacksonville FL; ten grandchildren, three great grandchildren, many other relatives and friends also survive.

In lieu of flower if you wish, the family requests that memorials may be made to the American Heart Association in Mr. Stephens’ memory.

ida edwards belch

 

Mrs. Ida Edwards Belch, age 85, of Stonehenge passed away on Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2002 at her residence following an extended illness.  Mrs. Belch was born on June 27, 1917 in Chocowinty, NC, the daughter of the late William Riley Edwards and the late Emily Barrington Edwards.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Zeddic Albert Belch in 2002.  Mrs. Belch was a member of the Woodville Baptist Church in Hertford, NC.

Surviving Mrs. Belch are one daughter and son-in-law, Shirley and Howard (Ty) Cobb of Blairsville; one son and daughter-in-law, Roger and Jean Belch of Virginia Beach, VA; six grandchildren, Eleven great grandchildren, many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, Oct. 10, 2002 at 7:00 p.m. from the funeral home chapel wit the Rev. Eddie Herring officiating.  Special music was presented by Vera Travis, Joyce and Bill Johnson and Janet Britt.  Services were also held on Monday, Oct. 14, at 11L00 a.m. from the Evan Funeral Home Chapel in Edenton, NC.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Roger E. Belch, Jr., Danny Britt, Bud Cox, Dick, Junior and Bobby Boyd.  Interment followed in the Beaver Hill Cemetery in Edenton.

mrs. naomi ralston akins

 

Mrs. Naomi Ralston Akins, age 80, of Blairsville, Georgia passed away Tuesday, October 8, 2002 in Union General Hospital in Blairsville.

Mrs. Akins was born in Fannin County, Georgia, on Sunday, May 14, 1922, a daughter of the late John Lewis Ralston and Georgia Davenport Ralston.  She was a lifelong resident of our area and a member of Blue Ridge Church of Christ.  Mr. Akins taught school in Union County during the years of 1949 and 1980.  She was preceded in death by a brother Richard Ralston, and a sister, Shirley Allen.

Survivors include her husband, Pat Akins of Blairsville; daughter and son-in-law, Patsy and W.C. Nelson of Blairsville; two sisters, Doris Hayes of Riverdale, Georgia and Jean Fitts of Blue Ridge, Georgia; and brother, Max Ralston, of Blue Ridge; grandchildren and their spouses, Will and Kathryn Nelson and Courtney and Greg Waller, all of Blairsville; five great grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and other relatives also survive.

Memorial services were held Wednesday, October 9, 2002 at 4 pm from the chapel of Cochran Funeral Home in Blairsville with Ministers Danny Cline, Terry Stuart, and Jim Bullington officiating.  Congregational singing was led by Mike Corn.  Interment was in Union Memory Gardens Cemetery in Blairsville.

The family has suggested memorials be made to Georgia Agape, 3094 Mercer University Drive, Suite 200, Atlanta, Georgia 30341.

mr. larry monroe austin

 

Mr. Larry Monroe Austin, age 47, of Paw Paw’s Road, Blairsville, passed away on Friday, October 11, 2002 in Claxton, Georgia following a sudden illness.  Mr. Austin was born on December 15, 1954 in Cirencester, England the son of W.M. Auston and Esme Howse Austin.  Mr. Austin was a member of the Church of Christ in Warren, NC.

Surviving Mr. Austin are his loving wife of twenty nine years, Evelyn Dyer Austin of Blairsville; father and mother, W.M. and Esme Austin of Blairsville; two daughters and son-in-laws, Angela and Jason Hughes of Blairsville, Cindy and Billy Smith of Blairsville; two brothers and one sister-in-law, Barry and Marcia Austin of TN, Garry Austin of NC; three grandchildren, Ashlee Stanley, Jessica Stanley, and Jacob Hughes; mother-in-law, Mrs. Obie Dyer of Blairsville; many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, October 13, 2002 at 2 pm from the Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jimmy Tanner and Rev. Bernie Levett officiating.  Special music was presented by Patty Dyer.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Larry Dyer, Ricky Dyer, Johnny Holbrooks, Mike Stanley, Jerry Dyer, Crett Dyer, Tony Betz, Raymond Dyer, Jason Hughes, Timmy Duckworth, Randy Dyer, Tommy Anderson and Shawn Mashburn.  Interment followed in the Pine Top Baptist Church Cemetery.

vernon “joe” dispane

 

Mr. Vernon “Joe” Dispane, age 75, native and lifelong resident of Union County, Georgia, passed away Wednesday, October 9, 2002 in Redmond Regional Hospital in Rome, Georgia.

Mr. Dispane was born on Sunday, October 31, 1926, in Union County, a son of the late Charlie Dispane and Lula Seabolt Dispane.  He was timber cutter and was preceded in death by his wife, Odell Ruth Grizzle Dispane, in 1990.

Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, Jerry and Reva Sue Dispane, of Blairsville; daughter and son-in-law, Darlene and Larry Lee, of Summerville, Georgia; four brothers: Luther J. Dispane, Clifford Dispane and Ralph Dispane, all of Cleveland, Georgia; H.M. Dispane, of Murrayville, Georgia; special friend, Cathy Payne, of Blairsville; Grandchildren and their spouses: Lois and Ray Mullins, of Dalton, Georgia; Roxie Lee of Summerville; Shane and Shannon Lee, both of Summerville; step granddaughter, Rachel Davis, of Blairsville; great grandchildren: Joseph, Kea, Jonathan, Jessica, Chad, Kyle, Dakota “Little Joe”, and Samba; many friends and other relatives also survive.

Funeral services were held Sunday, October 13, 2002, at 2:00 PM, from Philadelphia Baptist church, with Rev. Willis Garrett, Rev. Waymon Lovell, and Rev. Stacy Dyer officiating.  Special music was presented by Hubert and Betty Legg.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: James Burrell, Mike Vaughn, Ray Nichols, Wayne Tanner, Timmy and Terry Hilton.  The following gentlemen served as honorary escort to the family: Danny and Damon Davenport, Danny Stephens, Glen Payne, and Ronnie Dyer.  Interment was in the church cemetery.
