edwin davis singleton, jr.

 

Mr. Edwin Davis Singleton, Jr., age 76, of Honaker Rd., Blairsville passed away on Monday, October 8, 2008 in Atlanta following an extended illness.  Mr. Singleton was born on April 1, 1931 in Lewis County, KY, the son of the late Ed Davis Singleton, Sr. and the late Isa Walker Singleton.  He was a veteran of the U.S. Army of the Korean War.  He was a member of the Woodmen of the World.  He was preceded in death by a son, rocky Allen Singleton and by three brothers, Roy, Fred and Harry Singleton.  Mr. Singleton attended the Blairsville Church of the Nazarene.

Surviving Mr. Singleton are his loving wife of twenty-six years, Shirley Childers Singleton of Blairsville; six children, Jimmy Singleton of Waycross, GA, Lorene and R.D. King of S. Haven, MS, Jennifer Flood of TX, Ann Simon of Louisville, KY, David Evans of Vidalia, GA, Bobby and Lisa Evans of Lions, GA; one sister, Christine Bowen of Manchester, OH; one brother and sister-in-law, Donald and Ann Singleton of Mayesville, KY; eight grandchildren; many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Friday, October 12, 2007 at 2 p.m. from the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Danny Bohler officiating.  Special music was presented by Amber Wisdom and Joe West.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers, Vernon Patterson, al Bolewicki, Virgil Rowland, Jeff Stevenson, Daryl Casteel and Marvin Clark.  Interment followed in the Meadow Hills Cemetery.  The family met with friends at the funeral home on Thursday evening from 6-9 p.m.

lucille “lucy” thomas

 

Funeral services were held Friday, October 5, 2007 at 2:15 p.m. at New Bridge Baptist Church for Lucille “Lucy” Thomas, age 81, of Lakeland Road, Gainesville, GA.  The Rev. Milton Harris, the Rev. Anthony Kemp, and the Rev. Hoyt Winkler officiated.  Interment was in the church cemetery.  The family received friends from 4 p.m. until 9:15 p.m. Thursday, October 4, 2007 at Ward’s Funeral Home.

She died Wednesday, October 3, 2007 at the Lanier Park Campus of Northeast Georgia Medical Center following an extended illness.  Mrs. Thomas was born in Union County on August 15, 1926.  She was the daughter of the late William Buren and Phoebe Iowa Hood Hunter.  She retired from River Bend elementary as a lunchroom lady.  She was a member of River Bend Baptist Church and attended New Bridge Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Cleveland Thomas of Gainesville; daughters and sons-in-law, Patricia Ann and Lamar Berry of Gainesville, and Teresa Lynne and Brian Alexander of Clermont; sisters, Bonnie Mae Hunter of Blairsville and Lila Jean Greene of Braselton; grandchildren, Amanda Beth Berry, Andrew “Drew” Thomas Pratt Alexander, Zachary “Zach” Benjamin Reese Alexander, and Reese William Thomas Alexander.

ellen joyce deyton

 

Mrs. Ellen Joyce Deyton, age 68 of Daholnega, GA, passed away Friday, October 12, 2007.  Mrs. Deyton was born Sunday, April 16, 1939 in Union County, GA to the late Pless Joyce and the late Ovie Payne Joyce.  She was a member of Liberty Baptist Church and was preceded in death by sons, Michael and Larry Deyton, brothers, Jack, Melvin and Floyd Joyce.

Survivors include: husband, Henry Deyton, son & daughter-in-law, Danny Deyton and Patsy Chamberlain; daughter, Nancy Deyton, all of Dahlonega, GA; granddaughter and husband, Tina and William Frady; great-granddaughter, Jasmine Frady; great- grandson, Austin Frady all of Rockmart, GA; granddaughters, Kimberly Chamberlain and Julie Veal and grandson, Thomas Broome.

Funeral services were held  Sunday, October 14, 2007 at 4:30 p.m. from the Cochran Funeral Home with Rev. Randolph Jones officiating.  Interment was in Liberty Baptist Church Cemetery.  Serving as pallbearers were: Bryan Watson, Don Carpenter, Jessie Payne, Claude Everett, Joe Thomas and Andretti Stephens.

mary forrester

 

Mrs. Mary Forrester, age 95, passed away Tuesday, October 9, 2007.  Mrs. Forrester was preceded in death by her husband, E.V. Forrester.

She is survived by one son, Charles and his wife, Ella and one daughter, Camille Shaw and her husband Ray.  She also leaves six grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren.  Mrs. Forrester and her family were summer residents of Union County during the 1970’s and 1980’s.  During this time they attended Antioch Baptist Church.

There was a graveside service and interment at the Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery on Thursday, October 11, 2007 at 4 p.m. with the Rev. George Cline officiating.  The family gathered at the Mountain View Funeral Home form 2-3:30 p.m. for visitation prior to the service.

sandra deaver foster

 

Mrs. Sandra Deaver Foster, age 55, of Blairsville, GA, passed away Wednesday, October 10, 2007 at her home.  Sandra was born Saturday, November 10, 1941 in Fannin County, GA.  She was a member of Ivy Log Baptist Church.  Sandra was preceded in death by her father, Ray Deaver in 1994; and a sister, Sherrie Allison, in 2004.

Survivors include her husband, Marion Foster, of Blairsville; mother, Charlsie Deaver; brother, Ronald “Mack” Sullivan; sister, Carolyn Hughes; brother, Danny Deaver; and sister, Barbara Garrett, all of Blairsville; many nieces, nephews and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held Friday, October 12, 2007 at 2 p.m. from the Chapel of Cochran Funeral Home with the Rev. Jerry Karnes and rev. Tony Black officiating.  Interment followed in Ivy Log Baptist Church Cemetery.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Timmy Duckworth, AB Garrett, Darrin Sparks, Shawn Foster, Mitchell Eller, and Shawn Dwyer.  The family received friends at the funeral home from 6-9, Thursday, October 11.

phala “stormy” harper

 

Miss Phala “Stormy” Harper, age 67, of Blairsville, GA passed away on Sunday, October 07, 2007.  Phala was born in New York on September 17, 1940, the daughter of Benny Lee Harper and Betty Harper.

Surviving Phala are son, and daughter-in-law, Roy and Sandi Balchius, and Roy’s father Dennis Balchius; sister and her husband Leslie, and Rick Jenks; niece, Rachael and Jason Smith; great-niece, Haley Smith; nephew, Josh and Faith Jenks; nephew Jordan Jenks all of Port Crane, NY; her companion, bob “Woodstock” Qualtieri; aunt, Barbara Poliak, and JoAnne Sage; cousins, Margaret Roberts, Sharon Roberts, Ed and Lynne Dzupinka,  Sharon & Brian Smith, Jenny and Paul Martin, all of Endicott, NY; Bernard and Marilyn Roberts and family of Jacksonville, FL; Dr. D. Karl Davis and Eugene Canava, both of New York City.

Phala was born in New York City, lived in Endicott.  She graduated from Union-Endicott High School in 1958, attended grace DownsFlight School and worked at Greater Binghamton Airport for a short time.  After that, she married and moved to Cortland and Preble.

Phala was a dental assistant in Cortland, NY for many years and moved to Ft. Lauderdale, FL in 1978 to continue in the dental industry.  She later founded Tropical Screenprinting and Embroidery in 1989 and enjoyed a very successful 15 year run with her family and extended family Carlos, Glaci, Aura, Cheri, and Shane, at Tropical.  In 2004 Phala moved to the beautiful mountains of Blairsville, GA, where she joined the staff of the Holiday Inn Express and also the bookkeeper for Appalachian Dental Lab.

Phala “Stormy” was an avid motorcycle enthusiast, and loved her pets, the outdoors, and most of all, people.  The world around her seemed to glow, and we believe that even Heaven is improved by her presence. She will be sorely missed.

The family received friends from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Saturday morning, October 13th at Barber memorial Home, 428 Main St., Johnson City, NY.  Burial followed at Vestal Hills Memorial park in Vestal, NY.  Memorial services in Blairsville will be announced at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, her family requests that any expressions of sympathy in Phala’s name be made to Blairsville Humane Society, Blairsville, GA 30512.

lee etta warren

 

Mrs. Lee Etta Warren, age 94, of Blairsville, GA passed away Thursday, October 11, 2007 at Union General Hospital.  Mrs. Warren was born Monday, May 26, 1913 in Union County, GA to the late Adolphus Deaver and the late Mary Simpson Deaver.  She was a member of Greers Chapel Baptist Church    in Kennesaw, GA and had lived in Cobb County, GA for 50 years before moving to Blairsville in 2002.  She was preceded in death by husband, Joe Warren, granddaughter, Teresa Johnson great-grandsons, Kyle Byess and Cody Warren.

Survivors include: daughter, Shirley Warren of Jasper, GA; daughter, Shelbia Bennett of Canton, GA; son, Neal Warren of Woodstock, GA; seven grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren; two nephews and one nice.

Funeral services were held Sunday, October 14, 2007 at 2 p.m. from the Cochran Funeral Home with the Rev. Jimmy Rogers officiating.  Music was provided by, Gene Tatum.  Interment was in Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery.  Serving as pallbearers were: Sammy Bennett, Kenneth Byess, Michael Doss, Jack Owenby, Joe Warren and Jason Mayfield.
