Mr. Archie B. Collins, age 63, native and lifelong resident of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away Wednesday, October 15, 2003 at his home following an extended illness.

Mr. Collins was born in Union County, Georgia on Tuesday, February 13, 1940, a son of the late Uley T. Collins and Pearl V. Townsend Collins.  Mr. Collins was a construction contractor.  He had been a member of Allegheny Masonic Lodge #144, F&AM since 1964 and a member of Yaarab Temple in Atlanta since 1972.  Mr. Collins enjoyed music and was a musician.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Uley T. and Pearl Townsend Collins; brother, Gene Collins; sisters, Goldie Collins, Mayme Collins Aydelotte, Ethelene Espey and Juanita Sullivan; brothers, Ralph Collins, J.C. Dyer, Nathan Dyer and William C. Dyer.

Surviving are his wife, Myrtle Garrett Collins, of the home; daughter and son-in-law, Cindy and Ricky Manus; son and daughter-in-law, Benny and Carol Collins, all of Blairsville; brothers, Jim Collins and Vaughn Dyer, both of Blairsville; sisters, Irene Robinson and Maver Swanson, both of Young Harris; two grandchildren, Blake Manus and Andrew Collins; many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held Friday, October 17, 2003 at 2:00 pm from the chapel of Cochran Funeral Home with Rev. Willis Garrett officiating.  Special music was presented by John and Clayton Nix and The Country Cousins.  The following gentlemen served as Pallbearers: Justin Collins, Rod Carey, Johnny Burnette, Eric England, Shawn Dyer and Eddie Millsap.  Interment was in New Liberty Baptist Church Cemetery with graveside rites presented by Allegheny Masonic Lodge, #114, F&AM.

Cochran Funeral Home of Blairsville was entrusted by the family for the arrangements.

minnie lou murphy

 

Mrs. Minnie Lou Murphy, age 81, of Pat Colwell Road in Blairsville, passed away on October 14, 2003, in the Union County Nursing Home, following an extended illness.  Mrs. Murphy was born on November 25, 1921 in Union County, the daughter of the late Vance Underwood and the late Iva Franks Underwood.  She was a native and lifelong resident of Union County and had worked at Carolina Dress for several years.  She and her husband, Willie, had operated Young Cane Grocery for many years.  One of her favorite hobbies was quilting.  She was preceded in death by a son, Jerry Murphy and a brother, Joe Underwood.  Mrs. Murphy was a member of Antioch Baptist Church and attended Jones Creek Church of God.

Surviving Mrs. Murphy are her loving husband of sixty years, Willie Murphy, of Blairsville; two sons and daughters-in-law, Charles and Edith Murphy of Blairsville, Bud and Diane Murphy of Blairsville; one brother and sister-in-law, James and Erica Underwood of Dahlonega; two sisters and one brother-in-law, Ailene and Julian Stephens of Young Harris, Christine Tipton of Blairsville; four grandchildren, Shane, Daniel, Steven and Lydia Murphy; one great-grandchild, Taylor Michelle Murphy; many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, October 16, 2003 from the funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Terrell Jones, Rev. Harold Underwood and Rev. Leon Henderson officiating.  Special music was presented by the New Jerusalem Singers.  The following gentlemen served as Pallbearers: Shane Collins, Daniel Collins, Steven Collins, Frank Collins, Mike Kregline and Jason Collins.  Interment followed in the Providence Methodist Church Cemetery.

Mountain View Funeral Home of Blairsville was in charge of the arrangements.

pauline thomas collins

 

Mrs. Pauline Thomas Collins, age 90, of Pine Ridge Rd., in Blairsville, passed away on Wednesday, October 15, 2003 in the Union County Nursing Home, following an extended illness.  Mrs. Collins was born on July 2, 1913 in Union County, the daughter of the late Ed Thomas and the late Fannie Cloer Thomas.  She was a native and lifelong resident of Union County.  Preceded in death by her first husband, F.W. (Francis) Collins on September 24, 1982 and her second husband, Edwin Collins on May 26, 1995; a son, A.J. Collins on October 26, 2003; four sisters and three brothers.  Mrs. Collins was a member of Old Liberty Baptist Church.

Surviving Mrs. Collins are one daughter and son-in-law, Anita and Herbert Dyer of Blairsville; two sons and one daughter-in-law, F.C. and Shelley Collins of Blairsville, Randall Collins of Blairsville; two sisters, Vina Cook and Mae Pendland, both of Blairsville; daughter-in-law, Joan Collins of Blairsville; thirteen grandchildren, twenty three great grandchildren; many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, October 18, 2003 from the Old Liberty Baptist church with the Rev. Harley Hunter and Rev. Jerry Young Officiating.  Special music was presented by Deborah Collins and the Old Liberty Church Choir.  The following gentlemen served as Pallbearers: Troy, Jerry, Tim, Todd, Tracy and Ben Collins and Chris Dyer.  Interment followed in the church cemetery.

miss ella faye byers

 

Miss Ella Faye Byers, age 89 of Union County Nursing Home in Blairsville, Georgia passed away Saturday, October 18, 2003.

Miss Byers was born in Towns County, Georgia on Monday, April 20, 1914, a daughter of the late Nicholas Asbury Byers and Nancy Bryson Byers.  She was a lifelong resident of this area and had been a school teacher.  Miss Byers was a member of Old Brasstown Baptist Church and also attended Ivy Log Baptist Church.  She had been preceded in death by her parents; two sisters:  Lela Cobb, and Viola Byers, and a brother, Ralph C. Byers.

Surviving are a sister, Pauline B. Moss of Greensboro, North Carolina; niece, Marceline Malone of Mauldin, South Carolina; nephew, Harold Moss of Greensboro, NC; niece, Nancy Holyfield of Palmetto, GA; nephew, Robert Moss of Brookville, Pennsylvania; nephew, Don Byers of Blairsville, GA; and nephew, Gerald Byers of Lilburn, GA, many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, October 22, 2003 at 2 p.m. from Old Brasstown Baptist Church with Rev. Jimmy Rogers officiating.  Special music was presented by Minister R. Terry Hopper.  Interment was in the Old Brasstown Baptist Church Cemetery.

gladys rebecca freeman

 

Mrs. Gladys Rebecca Freeman, age 89, of Blue Ridge Hwy in Blairsville, passed away on Tuesday, October 14, 2003 in the Union County Nursing Home following an extended illness.  Mrs. Freeman was born on August 4, 1914 in Fannin county, the daughter of the late Narvie G. Payne and the late Laura Rector Payne.  She was a lifelong resident of Union County.  She had worked at the Walker Department Store in Blue Ridge for several years.  Mrs. Freeman was a member of the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Freeman in 2003.

Surviving Mrs. Freeman are a daughter and son-in-law, Brenda and James Reece of Marietta; four sons and three daughters-in-law, Jimmy and Susan Freeman of Ackworth, Sonny and Joyce Freeman of Blairsville, Larry and Marsha Freeman of Smyrna and Gary Freeman of Mayesville; one sister, Hazel Smith of Morgantown; three brothers and sisters-in-law, J.W. and Bobbie Payne of Blairsville, Herol and Laverne Payne of Blairsville, Arnold and Ruby Lee Payne of Blairsville; fourteen grandchildren; twenty two great grandchildren; many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Friday, October 17, 2003 from the Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Tom Ford officiating.  Special music was presented by Heather Henderson and Carol Renshaw.  The following gentlemen served as Pallbearers: Buddy Legg, Bill Smith, Marty Payne, Kevin Reece, Homer Powell and Jim Freeman II.  Interment followed in the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church cemetery.
