Press K. Beaver, age 74, of 5447 Ivy Log Road, Blairsville, Georgia, passé away on Wednesday, October 19, 2005 at the Union General Hospital in Blairsville, Georgia.

Mr. Beaver was a native and lifelong resident of Union County, Georgia.  He was the past Grand Master of the Dooley Lodge of the Free and Accepted Masons, and an avid gardener.  He was a member of the Zion Hill Baptist Church where he was an ordained Deacon and led the Church Choir for many years.  Mr. Beaver was the son of the late Ernest and Vesta Thomas Beaver.  He was preceded in death by his first wife Irene Patterson Beaver in 1986, a sister Inez McGaha and a brother Kermit Beaver.

Mr. Beaver is survived by his wife Nellie Halkom Beaver of Blairsville, GA; one daughter Brenda Sue Hansen and her husband Sandy of Canton, GA; one step-son Ricky Totherow of Leland, NC; one step-daughter Becky Totherow of Wilmington, NC; two brothers Randall Beaver and his wife Maggie, and Loys Beaver and his wife Carolyn all of Blairsville, GA; two sisters Elvie Odom of Blairsville, GA and Birdie Davenport of Morganton, GA; two granddaughters Melissa Swafford and her husband Gary of Ducktown, TN and Crystal Huff and her husband Jody of Blue Ridge, GA; two great grandchildren Ashley Akins and Joseph Huff both of Blue Ridge, GA; one step-grandchild George Totherow and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Friday, October 21, 2005 at the Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Blairsville, Georgia.  Pastor Luther Thomas, Brother Avery Beaver and Brother Eric Davenport will officiate.  Burial was in the Mt. Zion Baptist church Cemetery in Blairsville, Georgia.  Pallbearers were Tony Garrett, Alvin beaver, Chris beaver, Alfred Odom, Damon Davenport and Avery Mason. 

The family received friends from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., Thursday, October 220, 2005 at the Townson Rose Funeral Home Chapel in Murphy, NC where the body remained until placed in the church one hour prior to the service hour.

Townson Rose Funeral Home was is in charge of all the arrangements.

mrs. mary louise davis

 

Mrs. Mary Louise Davis, age 78, of Blairsville, GA, passed away Monday, October 17, 2005 at Union General Hospital.

Mrs. Davis was born Monday, February 14, 1927 in Fulton County, GA to the late John William and Mary Jurelle (Baird) Manus.  She was very active in the Union County Senior Center.  Mrs. Davis was preceded in death by her husband, Edd Davis in 1987 and her son, Luis Andrew Davis in 1993.

Survivors include: son and daughter-in-law, Jack Tracy and Rose Elliott of Phoenix, AZ; daughter and son-in-law, Ongie Elaine and John Veldhuizen of Blairsville, GA; son and daughter-in-law, Bobby and Nadine Davis of Houston, TX; son and daughter-in-law, William Edward and Kristi Davis of Houston, TX; grandchildren, Tony Elliott, Angela Dawn Elliott, Kimberly Ann Elliott, Jack Tracy Elliott, Jr., Jamie Elliott, Leslie Elliott, Lisa Joy Peel, Bonnie Louise Hamby, Thomas Edward Hamby, Jr., Timothy Adam Hamby, Kelly Marie Davis, Tiffany Louise Davis, Codie Marie Davis, Bobby Lee Andrew Davis, Heather Renee Davis and Holly Marie Davis; many great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Thursday, October 20, 2005 at 2 p.m. from the Chapel of Cochran Funeral Home with Minister Richard Perkins officiating.  Interment followed in Zion Church of God Cemetery in Baxley, GA, Friday, October 21, 2005 at 3 p.m.  Pallbearers were grandsons.

The family received friends Wednesday evening from 6 until 8 p.m.

In lieu of flowers the family has suggested donations be made to the family to help defray funeral expenses.

mr. douglas glenn bishop

 

Mr. Douglas Glenn Bishop, age 42, of Suches, GA, died Saturday, October 22, 2005 in Asheville, NC following a short illness.

Mr. Bishop was born in Gainesville, GA, July 28, 1963.  He had lived in Suches for the past 15 years and was a former resident of Dawson County.  He was a heavy equipment operator and was a member of Harmony Baptist Church in Dawson County.

He was preceded in death by his father, Roy Bishop and a stepson, Tony Wehunt.

He is survived by his wife, Martha Bishop, Suches, GA; his mother, Mary Bishop, Suches, GA; stepdaughter, Patty Wehunt, Dacula, GA; grandchildren: Erica Burt, Shauna Wehunt, Dexter Wehunt, Dustin Wehunt, Toby Wehunt, and Niki Wehunt; sister, Diane Ruprecht, Cherry Log, GA; brothers: Ted Bishop, David Bishop and Donal Bishop, all of Dawsonville, GA, Paul James Bishop, AL.  Several other relatives also survive.

Funeral services were scheduled for 2 p.m. Tuesday, October 25, 2005 at the Banister Funeral Home Chapel in Dahlonega. 

Rev. Carlton Coker and Rev. Jimmy Tanner officiating.

Interment followed in the Harmony Baptist Church Cemetery in Dawson County.

Mrs. Mildred Ross Stone, age 93, of Blairsville, GA, passed away Saturday, October 15, 2005 at Union County Nursing Home.

Mrs. Stone was born Monday, December 9, 1911 in Union County, GA to the late Ira Ross and Nora Williams Ross.  A member of First United Methodist Church of Union County.  She was preceded in death by sisters, Mabel Ross Bradbury, Frances Ross Apple and Flora Ross Lee, brother, James R. Henderson.

Survivors include: son and daughter-in-law, Pat and Susan Barron of Alpharetta, GA; three grandchildren and seven great grandchildren; sister, Sue Turner of Blairsville, GA; numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorial services were held Saturday, October 22, 2005 at 1:30 p.m. from the Union County Nursing Home with the Rev. Jerry Johnson officiating.

miss robbie c. white

 

Miss Robbie C. White, age 84, of 1179 Parks Dr., Suches, GA, died Monday, October 17, 2005 at the Bell Minor Nursing Home in Gainesville, GA, following an extended illness.

Born May 29, 1921 in Hall County, GA she was the daughter of the late Candler White and Netta Abercrombie Lee.  She was also preceded in death by a brother, Ernest White.  A former resident of Orlando, FL, Miss White lived in Suches, GA for 2 years and had been a resident of the Bell Minor Nursing Home in Gainesville for the past 10 years.  She had retired as an assembly line worker with General Communications in Orlando, FL.  Miss White was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include: sister, Mrs. Janet Parks, of Suches, GA; two brothers, Dr. Guy Lee, of Cleveland, GA, and Mr. Freddie Lee; several nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services were scheduled for 11 a.m., Wednesday, October 19, 2005 at the Wahoo Baptist Church, with the remains placed in state at the church at 10:30 a.m., Dr. Guy Lee officiated, interment followed in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Esther Betts Brisky Vosburgh, age 90, of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away Sunday, October 23, 2005.

Mrs. Vosburgh was a native of Pennsylvania, and moved to Blairsville in 1985 with her husband, Mr. Whitney Vosburgh, who preceded her in death.

Surviving family members include friends, Betty Tirmenstein, of Blairsville; and John and Mary Kiernan, of Blairsville; a sister, Helen B. Stilley, of Pennsylvania; and a nephew, Richard Stilley.  Many other friends from Lakeside Village also survive.

Mr. Wallace Lee York, age 66, of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, October 13, 2005.

Mr. York was born Saturday, June 17, 1939 in Atlanta, Georgia to the late Walter York and Henrietta (Catarina) York.  He was preceded in death by sisters, Jean Callaway and Faye Williams.  Mr. York had been living in this area for 3 years, moving here from Naples, Florida, where he had lived most of his life.  He was an employee of Colwell Construction Company.

Survivors include: wife, Shirley B. York of Blairsville, GA; son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Vicky of Mechanicsville, VA; daughter & son-in-law, Donna and Tom VanTol of Naples, FL; daughter, Cher York of Blairsville, GA; grandchildren, Allen and Sara Hill of Mechanicsville, VA, and Brett and Jenna VanTol of Naples, FL; several nieces and nephews also survive.

Memorial services were held Monday, October 17, 2005 at 5:30 p.m. from the Cochran Funeral Home with the Rev. Eddie Herring officiating.

mr. barry floyd harper

 

Mr. Barry Floyd Harper, age 58, of Blairsville, GA, passed away Sunday, October 16, 2005 at Union General Hospital.

Mr. Harper was born Thursday, March 13, 1947 in Canton, OH to Montine Shook Harper of Hiawassee and the late George J. Harper.  He had lived most of his life in Hiawassee before moving to Blairsville 8 years ago.  Barry retired from Lockheed, was part owner and operator of Blairsville Foliage Company and was a Vietnam army veteran.

Survivors in addition to his mother include: sons, Brock Harper and Byron Harper both of Young Harris, GA; sister, Barbara Dills of Hiawassee, GA; brother, Larry Harper of Hayesville, NC; granddaughter, Mikayla King of Hiawassee, GA; special friend Suzanne Davis and her children, Megan and Jarred Davis.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, October 19, 2005 at 2 p.m. from the Cochran Funeral Home with the Rev. Jimmy Rogers and Rev. Harold Ledford officiating.  Interment was in Many Forks Baptist Cemetery with military rites conducted by the North Georgia Honor Guard.  Serving as pallbearers were: Kevin Bradshaw, Christopher Harper, Jacky Dills, Craig Queen, Michael Harper, Kenny Henderson.  Honorary pallbearers were: Bill Nelson, Tommy Phillips, Terry Roberts.

Mr. Thomas Harding Deaver, age 84, of Blairsville, GA, passed away Thursday, October 20, 2005 at Kindred Health Care in Atlanta following an extended illness.  Mr. Deaver was born Wednesday, December 1, 1920 in Union County, GA.  He was a member of Ivy Log Baptist Church.  Mr. Deaver was preceded in death by his mother, Pearl Deaver.

Survivors include: brother, Lester Deaver and cousins, Billie and Dale Elliott, Mary Twiggs, Harvey Deaver and Billie Young, all of Blairsville, GA.

mrs. laura christian payton

 

Mrs. Laura Christian Payton, age 35, of Evan Circle, Blairsville, formerly of West Palm Beach, FL, passed away on Monday, Oct. 17, 2005 in the Union General Hospital following an extended illness.  Mrs. Payton was born on Aug. 14, 1970 in West Palm Beach, FL, the daughter of Douglas Alan Dowdy and Sara Adkins Dowdy.  Laura battled Diabetes for twenty-six years and after a Kidney and Pancreas transplant on Aug. 20, 1997 she gave birth to a son on Aug. 20, 1999 who was named after the doctor who performed the operation.  She was employed as a Teacher with the Gilmer County Board of Education.  Mrs. Payton was a member of Antioch Baptist Church.

Surviving Mrs. Payton are her loving husband of seven years, Thomas Andrew Payton of Blairsville, one Zachary Burke Payton of Blairsville, parents, Doug and Sara Dowdy of Blairsville, one brother and sister-in-law, Eric and Jennifer Dowdy of Blairsville, one sister, Susanne Dowdy of Blairsville, many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Saturday Oct. 22, 2005 at 3 p.m. from the funeral home chapel with the rev. George Cline officiating.  Special music was provided by Patsy Davenport, Tammy Blassingame, Danita, Michael and Josh Kennedy.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers, Eric Dowdy, Earl Dowdy, Christopher Orsberg, Tim Grader, Steve Drake and Stanley Stepp.  Interment followed in the Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers if you wish, the family requests that memorials may be made to the Zachery Payton Education fund at United Community Bank.

Mrs. Oma Davenport Fowler, age 89, of Blue Ridge, and Blairsville, GA, passed away Thursday, October 13, 2005 at Union County Nursing Home.  Oma was born Saturday, January 15, 1916 in Fannin County, GA to the late Larkin Davenport and the late Lizzie Tilley Davenport.  She was a member of The O/Zion Baptist and was preceded in death by her husband, Dudley Fowler.

Survivors include: daughter, Vickie Forrester, of Blairsville, GA; daughter, Janie Whitfield of jasper, GA; brother, Carl Davenport of Blue Ridge; sisters, Leesta Davenport of Blue Ridge, Loraine Davenport of Blue Ridge, and Vesta Duval of Nashville, GA, nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services were held Sunday, October 16, 2005 at 3 p.m. from the Henry Cochran Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Charlie Mull and Rev. Jerry D. Johnson officiating.  Music was provided by Patsy Beaver and James McGill.  Interment followed in O’Zion Baptist Church Cemetery.  Serving as pallbearers were: Michael Beavers, Hoyt Campbell, Hubert Stewart, James McGill, Donald Stewart, Michael Pope, W.C. Stewart.  Honorary pallbearers included: J.T. Duvall, Gerald Prewett and Andy Stephens.

mrs. mary dyer smith

 

Mrs. Mary Dyer Smith, age 96, of Highway 180, Blairsville, GA, passed away Monday, October 17, 2005 at Union General Hospital following a brief illness after falling and breaking her hip while working in her yard.

Mrs. Smith was born Friday, April 23, 1909 in Union County, GA the daughter of the late James C. Dyer (who lived to be over 102) and the late Malissa Swain Dyer.

Mrs. Smith was a life long resident of the Choestoe Community.  Her ancestors were among the early settlers of this area.  She had a long career as a school teacher in Union County.  After retirement, from her 39 years as a teacher, she married the Rev. Tom Smith in 1975.  They both enjoyed hard work together in their vegetable and flower gardens.  Mrs. Smith was blessed with good physical health to be able to continue growing lovely flowers.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Tom Smith in June 2002 and all of her 10 brothers and sisters.

Mrs. Smith was a member of the First Baptist Church of Blairsville for the last several years.  During most of her earlier life she was a member of Choestoe Baptist Church.

She is survived by 2 step daughters and their husbands: Sara and Virgil Elliott of Blairsville, GA, and Betty and Robert Aiola of Powder Springs, GA, many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Friday, October 21, 2005 at 1 p.m. from the Choestoe Baptist Church with the rev. Danny Parris, Dr. Fred Lodge, Rev. Virgil Elliott and Rev. Dick Stillwell officiating.  Music was provided by R. Terry Hooper and Jo Mosley.  Interment followed in Choestoe Baptist Church Cemetery.

The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Harold Dyer, Jack Dyer, Keith Nichols, Franklin Hunter, Ricky Dyer, Chris Souther.  Serving as honorary escort: J.B. Watson.

Mr. Larry Hutson, age 60, of Blairsville, GA, passed away Wednesday, October 19, 2005 at his home.  Mr. Hutson was born Sunday, June 24, 1945 in Cherokee County, NC to the late Elbert Hutson and the late Lorene Reece Hutson.  Larry was a member of New Harmony Baptist Church, and was a honorary member of the Blairsville Jaycees.  He was also a U.S. Army veteran having served in Vietnam.  He was preceded in death by a sister, JoAnn Hutson.

Survivors include: wife, Karen Johnson Hutson, son and daughter-in-law, Kevin and Dena Hutson, son, Brad Hutson, brother and sister-in-law, J.E. and Betty Hutson, niece and nephew, Amy and Chad Underwood, granddaughter, Cheyenne Evangeline Hutson and great nephews, Noah and Eli Underwood, all of Blairsville, GA.

Funeral services were held Friday, October 21, 2005 at 11 a.m. from the Chapel of the Cochran Funeral Home of Blairsville with Rev. Bill Honaker officiating.  Music was provided by Evan Hughes.  Interment followed in New Harmony Baptist Cemetery with graveside military honors by the North Georgia Veterans.  Serving as pallbearers were Clayton Ramsey, Charles Reagan, Bobby Lance, Richard Waldroop, Gene Nelson, Ray Brown, Danny Owenby and J.E. Corn.

Mrs. Shirley Mae Grizzle, age 39, of Blairsville, GA, passed away Thursday, October 20, 2005 at Union General Hospital.  Mrs. Grizzle was born Friday, August 19, 1966 in Buncombe County, NC.  She was a member of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church and also a member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians.

Survivors include: husband, Randy Grizzle, daughter, Haley Grizzle and parents, Rev. Frank and Ruby Dockery, all of Blairsville, GA.

Funeral services were held Saturday, October 22, 2005 at 2 p.m. from the chapel of the Cochran Funeral Home of Blairsville with the rev. Jonathan Hood officiating.  Music was provided by the Eagle Mountain Singers.  Interment followed in the Corinth Baptist Church Cemetery.  Serving as pallbearers were Ned Wilcoxon, Jeff Shields, Tommy Lovell, Herbert Teague, Larry Trulove and Andy McClure.  Honorary pallbearers included Tom Swartz and Eugene McClure.

The family received friends at the funeral home from 6-9, Friday, October 21.
