Mr. Richard Lewis Caldwell, age 67, of Blairsville, Georgia passed away Friday, October 29, 2004, in Kennestone Hospital in Marietta.

Mr. Caldwell was a longtime resident of Marietta and moved to Blairsville in 1998.  He was a member of New Providence Baptist Church in Marietta.  He attended Antioch Baptist Church in Blairsville and was a member of The Wings of Hope Support Group.

Surviving are his wife, Sandra Caldwell, of Blairsville; his mother, Louise Caldwell, of Cartersville, Georgia; son, Michael Richard Caldwell of Blairsville; daughter, Michelle Virginia Denton, of Acworth, Georgia; brother, Robert Douglas Caldwell of Marietta, Georgia; two sisters; Peggy Bowling of Young Harris, Georgia and Sandra Wallace of Marietta, Georgia; many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Monday, November 1, 2004 at 3 p.m. at the Chapel of Cochran Funeral Home in Blairsville, with Rev. Jim Ackles officiating.  Special music will be presented by Susan Murphy and Marion Durkee.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Randy Dow, Kerry Denton, Tom Wood, Ray Yarington, Jim Bowling, and Ott Jordan.  Burial was in Union Memory Gardens Cemetery.

dorothy sullivan bryant

 

Mrs. Dorothy Sullivan Bryant, age 74, of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away Friday, October 29, 2004 in Blairsville.

Mrs. Bryant was a native and lifelong resident of Blairsville, and was a member of First United Methodist Church of Union County.  She began her nursing career when Union General Hospital was established and worked with union General Hospital and Union County Nursing Home.  She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother.  She had been preceded in death by her sister, Maggie Lee Sullivan Byers.

Survivors include her husband of 57 years, Howard W. Bryant, of Blairsville, daughter and son-in-law, Phyllis and Ken McClure of Sparta, Georgia; son, Michael Bryant, of Dahlonega, Georgia; daughter and son-in-law, Pam and Tommy Jordan, of Blairsville; son and daughter-in-law, Keith and Becky Bryant, of Blairsville; sister, Charlsie Deaver, of Blairsville; two brothers, Tommy Sullivan of Riverdale, Georgia; and Mac Sullivan, of Blairsville; four grandchildren, Lynn and Tony Heard, Kay and Jeff Coots, Joe Jordan, and Jordan Bryant; four great grandchildren; Blake Heard, Kennedy Heard, Brandon Coots, and Ashley Coots.  Many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held Sunday, October 31, 2004 at 3 p.m. at First United Methodist Church of Union County, with Rev. Eddie Herring officiating.  Special music was presented by Martha Cone and Keith DeFoor.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Doug Davenport, Joe Jordan, Ron Byers, Don Murphy, Hoyt Raper, and Bud Akins.  Serving as honorary escort to the family was Leon Davenport and Ray Groves.  Burial was in Confidence United Methodist Church Cemetery.

mr. truett burlson daniel

 

Mr. Truett Burlson Daniel, age 91, of Henson Road, Blairsville passed away on Sunday, October 31, 2004 following an extended illness.  Mr. Daniel was born on October 10, 1913 in Habersham County, the son of the late Wade Daniel and the late Audrea Canup Daniel.  In his younger years he had worked for the U.S. Postal Service and then was a driver for Greyhound for over twenty-two years.  He was a cattle farmer and also was on the Board of Registrars in union County for over twenty-three years.  He was a veteran of the U.S. Marines of WWII.  Mr. Daniel was preceded in death by a granddaughter-in-law, Kim Daniel in 2000, a son, Roger Daniel in 1991.  Mr. Daniel was a member of the Suwanee First Baptist Church.

Surviving Mr. Daniel are his loving wife of sixty-nine years, Mildred Higgins Daniel of Blairsville, one son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Lucille Daniel of Blairsville, six grandchildren and their spouses, Elizabeth and Terr Franklin, Renee and Perry Branyon, David Daniel, Robert and Leslie Daniel, Mary and Jeff Fortenberry, Jeffrey Daniel, great grandchildren, Shannon and Derek Richards, Jessica and Crystal Hassan, Logan and Houston Daniel, Parker and Coleson Daniel, Morgan and Jordan Fortenberry, Joshua, Bailey, and Jonah Daniel, many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, November 2, 2004 at 2 p.m. from the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Tommy Seay officiating.  Special music was presented by Moe and Gail Weaver, Heather and Nell Henderson.  The grandsons served as pallbearers.  Serving as honorary pallbearers:  Richard Hassan, Derek Richards, Glenn Gooch, Hugh Stone, Charles Hill, Jack Lance, Elliot Hill, Carlton Colwell, Allen Conley, Any Mathis, and Jack Lance.  Interment followed in the Union Memory Gardens Cemetery with the North Georgia Honor Guard conducting miliatry honors.

mrs. vita michelle tanner

 

Mrs. Vita Michelle Tanner, age 42, of Parham Drive, Blairsville passed away on Wednesday, October 27, 2004 in the Union General Hospital following an extended illness.  Mrs. Tanner was born on August 25, 1962 in Clark County, GA, the daughter of Robert L. Bradley and Evelyn Parham Bradley.  She was a lifelong resident of Union County.  She was employed with the Union County Nursing Home where she will be greatly missed.  Mrs. Tanner was a member of Liberty Baptist Church.

Surviving Mrs. Tanner are her loving husband of twenty-four years, Tommy Tanner of Blairsville, mother and step-father, Evelyn and Audrey Deyton of Blairsville, father, Robert L. Bradley of Gainesville, two sisters and brothers-in-law, Melanie Lynn and Kenny Dyer of Blairsville, Louvenda and Boyd Weaver of Blairsville, three brothers and two sisters-in-law, Ryan Deyton and fiancee’ Beth Whatley, of Blairsville, Don and Peggy Deyton of Blairsville, Danny and Kathy Deyton of Gainesville, several beloved nieces, nephews and many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Friday, October 29, 2004 at 4 p.m. from the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Brent Chatham officiating.  Special music was presented by the Liberty Baptist Church Choir.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers, J.M. Grizzle, Charles Wright, Keith Beavers, Tony Henderson, Harry Smith, Joe Edwards, Robert Schaaf and Ken Carlton.  Interment followed in the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mrs. Anna Mae Nichols, age 86, native and lifelong resident of Blairsville, GA passed away Saturday, October 23, 2004 at her home.

Mrs. Nichols was a member of Confidence United Methodist Church, and had been preceded in death by her husband, Willard Nichols, in 1996.

Surviving Mrs. Nichols are her daughters and sons-in-law: Connie and Tommy Duncan, and Cathy and Larry Brackett, all of Blairsville; a sister, Maudell Nicholson, of Blairsville; three grandchildren: Ronnie Duncan, Stephanie Hollis, and Shannon Brackett; great grandsons: Justin Duncan, Spencer Brackett, and Brooks Brackett, many nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, October 26, 2004, at 11 a.m., at Confidence United Methodist Church, with Rev. John Strickland  officiating.  Special music was presented by The Kelley Trio.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Tommy Duncan, Ronnie Duncan, Larry Brackett, Shannon Brackett, Jeff Hollis, and Dormas Sullivan  Burial was in the church cemetery.

Mr. Wayne Edward Colwell, age 68, native and lifelong resident of Blairsville, GA, passed away Friday, October 29, 2044, at his home.

Mr. Colwell was a member of First Baptist Church of Blairsville, and had been a member of Allegheny Masonic Lodge, #114, F&AM, since 1958.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara Parker Colwell, of their home; daughters and sons-in-law: Leah and Greg Adams, and Leslie and Robert Daniel, all of Blairsville; two grandchildren, Parker and Coleson Daniel; many friends and other relatives also survive.

Funeral services were held Sunday, October 31, 2004, at 5 p.m., at First Baptist Church of Blairsville, with Rev. B.A. Buchanan, Minister Chris Miller, and Rev. Mike Hardy  officiating.  Special music was presented by Mildred and Nelson LeCroy.  Masonic Rites were presented by Allegheny Masonic Lodge, #114 F&AM.  Burial was held Monday in Union Memory Gardens Cemetery.

nina jones everett

 

Mrs. Nina Jones Everett, age 86, of Marietta, Georgia, formerly of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away Sunday, October 24, 2004 in Wellstar Community Hospital in Austell, Georgia.

Mrs. Everett was born in Union County, Georgia on Monday, November 26, 1917, a daughter of the late Narve Jones and Fannie Potts Jones.  She lived in Blairsville for most of her life, and moved to Marietta eight years ago.  Mrs. Everett was a member of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church in Blairsville and was the widow of the late Hershel Everett.  She was preceded in death by sister, Netta Mae Totherow and three brothers, Cecil Jones, I.V. Jones, and N.J. Jones.

Survivors of Mrs. Everett include daughters: Helen Smith of Burlington, North Carolina; Shirley Stockton of Marietta, Georgia; Doris Kidd of Smyrna, Georgia; and Becky McClain of Powder Springs, Georgia; sons: Donald Everett and Arlen Everett, both of Marietta, Georgia; Terry Everett of Kennesaw, Georgia; Jerry Everett of Hiawassee, Georgia; a sister, Kathleen Brackett of Marietta, Georgia; and a brother, Grady Jones of Blairsville; nineteen grandchildren, eighteen great-grandchildren, five great, great grandchildren and many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, October 27, 2004 at 10 a.m. in the Chapel of Cochran Funeral Home in Blairsville with Rev. Tommy Jones officiating.  Special music was presented by New Life Signers.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Terry Everett, Adam Everett, Darryl Everett, Mike Allred, Mark Allred, B.J. Kidd, and Rob Stockton.  Burial was in Kennesaw Memorial in Marietta on Wednesday, October 27, 2004 at 2 p.m.

Mrs. Betty Chambers Gray, age 78, native and lifelong resident of Blairsville, GA, passed away Friday, October 29, 2004 in Union General Hospital in Blairsville.

Mrs. Gray was a homemaker and a member of Ivy Log Baptist Church and Notla Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star.  She had been preceded in death by her husband, James D. “Jack” Gray, who passed away in 2002.

Survivors include daughter and husband, Nancy and Rufus Everett, of Blairsville; daughter and husband, Gwenelda and Larry Connally, of Blairsville; son and wife, Bruce and Mazie Gray, of Blairsville; daughter, Sherry Gray of Mebane, NC; granddaughter and husband, Anna and Robby Roxbury and great granddaughter, Emma Grayce Roxbury; granddaughter and husband, Katy and Jonathan Jones; granddaughter and husband, Laina and Donald Elliott; great granddaughters, Grayeleigh and JaceyAllen Elliott; grandson, Clay Dorsett; granddaughter, Bethany Dorsett; grandson and wife, mason and Jennifer Dorsett; great grandchildren, Abby and Connor Dorsett; special niece and nephews, Sybil and Ted Tyre; many nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services were held Sunday, October 31, 2004, at 3 p.m., at Ivy Log Baptist Church, with Rev. Jerry Karnes officiating.  Special music was presented by The Ivy Log Quartet.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Kevin Garrett, Darin Bridges, Darrell Bridges, Bobby Ward, Tony Ledford, and Brian Mashburn.  The following gentlemen served as honorary escort to the family: James Bridges, Harvey Deaver, Ted Tyre, and Richard Corn.  Burial was in the church cemetery.

joe marvin akins, jr.

 

Joe Marvin Akins, Jr. age 84, of Blairsville, passed away on Monday, October 25, 2004 in the Clay County Care Center in Hayesville, NC.  Born in Union County, Mr. Akins was the son of the late Joseph Marvin, Sr. and Molly Coker Akins.  He retired from Campbell’s Pepper Plant as a company supervisor.  Mr. Akins was a member of the First Baptist Church of Blairsville.  He was also a WWII veteran, serving in the United States Air Force.

Survivors include his sister, Mary Sue Colwell; one brother, Pat Akins both of Blairsville; several nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were conducted on Wednesday, October 27, 2004 at 2 p.m. from the Old Chapel of the First Baptist Church of Blairsville with Rev. B.A. Buchanan, Rev. Danny Parris and Min. Terry Stuart officiating.  Music was by Terry Hooper.  Interment followed in the Blairsville City Cemetery with full Military Honors by the North GA Honor Guard.  Pallbearers were Jim Colwell, Larry Akins, Milton Akins, George Akins, Van Akins, and Doug Gooch.  Honorary pallbearers were Jim Dobson, Norm Thompson, Roy Bateman, Bobby Dillinger, Edwin Cook, Ray Rogers, Bud Nichols, Mike Mashburn, and W.C. Nelson.  Memorial contributions may be made to the Wynelle Akins Scholarship Fund c/o First Baptist Church of Blairsville, GA.  Akins Funeral Home of Blue Ridge was in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Sara Smith Wynn, age 89, of Blairsville, GA, passed away Friday, October 29, 2004 in Union County Nursing Home.

Mrs. Wynn was born in Stephens County, GA, on Friday, march 19, 1915, a daughter of the late Charles W. Smith and Navada Young Smith.  Mrs. Wynn moved to Blairsville in 1974.  She was a homemaker and a member of First United Methodist Church of Union County.  Her husband, Herman Lewis Wynn, had preceded her in death.

Surviving Mrs. Wynn are her son, Thomas Wynn, of Blairsville; four grandchildren, David Power, of Cumming, GA; Kathy Anglin, of Flowery Branch, GA; Matthew Wynn, of Blairsville; and Jane Wilson, of Blairsville; three great grandchildren, Gabe and Grant Anglin, and Sydney Wynn.

Graveside services were Monday, November 1, 2004, at 2 p.m. at Union memory Gardens Cemetery in Blairsville, with Rev. Eddie Herring officiating.  Special music was presented by Mrs. Elizabeth Plott.

mrs. pearl souther wellborn

 

Mrs. Pearl Wellborn, age 95, of Blairsville, GA, passed away on Wednesday, October 27, 2004 in Union General Hospital following an extended illness.  She was born in Union County, GA on May 25, 1909 to the late Jessie Benjamin and Dovie (Townsend) Souther, spending most of her life in Union and Towns Counties.  When a child she lived with her family in Colorado, moving there in 1912 and returning to Georgia in 1918.  She was a member of Sharp Memorial United Methodist Church.  She is survived by nephews: Orpheus E. Deaver of Blairsville, GA, Suell Souther of Blairsville, GA, Buell Souther of Dallas, GA, Gary Erwin of Blairsville, GA and Charles Souther of Huntsville, AL and Young Harris, GA.  Funeral services were held at Sharp Memorial United Methodist Church on Friday, October 29, 2004 at 2 p.m. with the Rev. John Kay and the Rev. Jimmy Rogers officiating.  Pallbearers were Brett Deaver, Brad Barnes, Derek Stepp, Jim Reece, Joe Maxwell, and Bryan Souther.  Interment was in Old Union Baptist Church Cemetery.  Banister Funeral Home of Hiawassee in charge of arrangements.
