harold hunter

 

Mr. Harold (better known as Bear) Hunter, age 66, of Mauney Rd., Blairsville, passed away on Monday, October 28, 2002 in the Emory Hospital in Atlanta following an extended illness.  Mr. Hunter was born on May 3, 1936 in Towns County the son of the late Frank Garland Hunter and the late Sue C. Swanson Hunter.  Mr. Hunter was a lifelong resident of union County.  He retired from the city of Blairsville with eleven years of service.  He was preceded in death by two sisters, Linda Hunter in 1952, and Anna Mae Bostick in 2002.  Mr. Hunter was a member of the Bethlehem Baptist Church.

Surviving Mr. Hunter are one daughter an son in law, Debra Ann and Steve Lay of Cedar Bluff, AL; three sons and two daughters in law, Ricky and Linda Hunter Calhoun, Jerry and Debbie Hunter of Plainville, GA, Tony Hunter of Plainville; one sister, Glenda Dyer of Blairsville, ten grandchildren, three great grandchildren; many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2002 at 3:30 pm from the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Leon Henderson officiating.  Special Music was presented by the Faith Singers.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: David Dyer, Lamar Dyer, Curtis Corn, Ronnie Odom, Ottis Franklin, Robby Totherow, Charlie Studebaker, and Larry Stevens.  Interment followed in the Old Union Cemetery in Young Harris.

oscar sullivan

 

Oscar C. Sullivan, 95, of Eaton, Colorado died Tuesday, Oct. 22, 2002 at Fairacres Manor, Greeley, Colorado.

Mr. Sullivan was born August 28, 1907 in Blairsville, GA, to Richard Barney and Randi (Hood) Sullivan.

On Dec. 11, 1927, he married Hazel Homes in Eaton.  She died March 21, 1994.

Mr. Sullivanís mother died when he was 5 years old.  He was raised by his stepmother, Florida (Hood) Sullivan.  He attended school in Union County, GA and come to Colorado at the age of 17 with $2 in his pocket.  He farmed in the Eaton area with the exception of three years when farmed near Wiggins.  He raised hogs, sheep, beef cattle, dairy cattle, corn, potatoes, sugar beets, pinto beans and alfalfa.

Mr. Sullivan was a member of the Eaton Baptist Church.

Survivors are five sons, Gene Sullivan of Riveria, Texas, Paul Sullivan, Harold Sullivan and Tom Sullivan, all of Greeley, and Harry Sullivan of Monument; three sisters, Grace Rogers of Cornelia, GA, Dorothy Spiva of Blairsville, GA and Maxine Stephens of Aiken, SC; three brothers, Clyde Sullivan of Clermont, GA, Hoke Sullivan of North Augusta, GA, and Grady Sullivan of Atlanta, GA; 15 grandchildren; four step grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; seven step great-grandchildren; and six great-great grandchildren.

An infant daughter; two sons, Richard and Clyde; three sisters, Myrtle Josey, Elma Winn and Rosalee Rexford; and five brothers, Marion, Home, J. Walter, John and Hubert (Wiley) are deceased.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 25, at the Eaton Baptist Church in Eaton.  Interment will be in the Eaton Cemetery.

Friends may visit from 4-8 p.m. today at the Adamson Memorial Downtown Chapel, Greeley.

ruth bertha cain

 

Miss Ruth Bertha Cain, age 62, of Wolfpen Gap Rd., Suches, passed away on Wednesday, October 30, 2002 in the Union General Hospital following an extended illness.  Miss Cain was born on April 7, 1940 in Union County, the daughter of the late Harley Bartow Cain and Velma Lunsford Cain.  Miss Cain was a native and lifelong resident of Union County.  She was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving Miss Cain are her mother, Velma Lunsford Cain of Blairsville; one brother and sister in law, Gene and Susie Cain of Cumming, GA; two nephews, Joshua Cain of Smyrna and Ashley Cain of Cumming; many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Friday, Nov. 1, 2002 at 2:00 pm from the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Phillip Davenport officiating.  Special music was presented by The Kelly Trio.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Ricky Cain, Joshua Cain, Jonathan Dills, Junior Lunsford, Jimmy Lunsford and Larry Lunsford.  Interment followed in the Zion Baptist Church Cemetery in Suches.

denver jackson davis

 

Mr. Denver Jackson Davis, age 77, of Davis Drive, Suches passed away on Sunday, October 27, 2002 at his home following an extended illness.  Mr. Davis was born on June 1, 1925 in Fannin County, the son of the late Rev. William J. Davis and the late Rhonda Jane Gillbert Davis.  Mr. Davis was a lifelong resident of Union and Fannin Counties.  Mr. Davis was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving Mr. Davis are his companion, Mazie Payne of Suches; one daughter, Elaine Dube of Winder, GA; four sisters and one brother0in-law, Erie Mason of Murphy, NC, Lillie Watts of Dahlonega, Mary Moore of Suches, Daisy and Lee Yonts of Suches; two grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2002 from the funeral home chapel with the Rev. David LeGrand officiating.  Special music was presented by Janie Turner.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Lee Yonts, Joe Christopher, Michael Davis, Dan Davis, Eulis Davis, Ronnie Pirkle and Melvin Turner.  Interment followed in the Davis Family Cemetery in Suches.

james lon carll

 

Mr. James Lon Carll, age 81, of Forest Circle, Blairsville, passed away on Thursday, October 24, 2002 in the Piedmont Hospital in Atlanta following an extended illness.  Mr. Carll was born on Sept. 4, 1921 in Elgin, Kansas, the son of the late James Lawrence Carll and the late Ora Lee Loudon Carll.  He was a veteran of the US Army in WWII, a member of the DAV of Foreign Wars, a Kentucky Colonel, member of Knights of Columbus, The Elks Clue.  He taught a wood carving class at the Oasis Program at the First United Methodist Church, was an avid horseman and was a friend to all who knew him.  Mr. Carl was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Blairsville.

Surviving Mr. Carll are two daughters, Katherine Lee Ratti of Sarasota, FL, and Anna Marie Carll of Mineral Bluff, GA; four sons and three daughters in law, James A. and Linda Carll of Sarasota, Lon Paul Carll of Sarasota, Gregory and Cynthia Carll of Conner, MT, Michael and Maureen Carll of Sarasota; one brother, Paul Carll of Cleveland, OH; one sister, Arminta Baker of Oil City, PA; eight grandchildren, many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, Oct. 27, 2002 at 3:00 pm from the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Eddie Herring officiating.  Special music was presented by Martha Cone and Patsy Davenport.  Interment followed in the Brandon Cemetery in Cranberry, PA.  Military honors were conducted by the North Georgia Honor Guard. In lieu of flowers if you wish, the family requests that memorials may be made to The Child Enrichment Center of the First United Methodist Church.

mrs. nell dyer

 

Mrs. Nell Dyer, age 88, of Blairsville passed away Friday, November 1, 2002 in Blairsville.  Mrs. Dyer was born May 24, 1914 in Chatooga County, Georgia, the daughter of James and Maudie Sanders Sweatman.  She had lived most of her life in Union County and was a member of Pine Top Baptist Church.  Nell was an accomplished seamstress and was always willing to help her neighbors when needed.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Dyer, in 1997.

She is survived by: son and daughter-in-law, Calvin and Hazel Dyer of Blairsville; daughter, Joan Akins of Sugar Hill, GA; daughter and son-in-law, Sylvia and Billy Turnage of Blairsville; daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn and Doug Dyer of Blairsville; daughter and son-in-law, Lynell and Barry Lackey of Blairsville; sisters-in-law, Annie Ruth Sweatman of Summerville, GA and Ella Sweatman of Trion, GA and 10 grandchildren, Keith and Aubrey Dyer, Ken Akins, Debbie Dyer, Karen Merrill, Andrew Turnage, Sid Dyer, Shawn Dyer and Heather and Brooke Lackey, 9 great grandchildren and many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held Sunday, November 3, 2002 at 2:00 PM from the chapel of the Cochran Funeral Home of Blairsville, with Rev. Henry Loggins, Rev. Stacy Dyer and Rev. Jimmy Tanner officiating.   Music was provided by Mrs. Kim Thomas and Mrs. Patricia Cook.  Mrs. Dyerís grandsons served as pallbearers.  Interment was in the Choestoe Baptist Church Cemetery.
