evelyn b. schlienger

 

Mrs. Evelyn B. Schlienger, age 88, of Blairsville formerly of Lake Placid, FL, passed away on Saturday, November 3, 2007 in Union General Hospital following an extended illness.  Mrs. Schlienger was born on July 13, 1919 in Racine, WI, the daughter of the late Abraham and Emma Freitag.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Louis c. Schlienger and a daughter, Karen Hillman.  She loved children, flowers and animals.  We will love and miss her always.  Mrs. Schlienger was a member of the United Methodist Church in lake Placid, FL.

Surviving Mrs. Schlienger are three sons and daughters-in-law, James and Rhonda Schlienger of Blairsville, Jeffery and Leslie Schlienger of Plantation, FL, Louis and Lorraine Schlienger of Vineland, NJ; one daughter, Beverly Schlienger of Vineland, FL; eleven grandchildren; many beloved great-grandchildren; many other relatives and friends also survive.

A memorial service will be held at a later date and will be announced.  IN lieu of flowers, if you wish, the family requests that memorials may be made to the Humane Society in Mrs. Schlienger’s memory.

peggy sherman smith

 

Mrs. Peggy Sherman Smith, age 83 of Blairsville, GA passed away Saturday, November 3, 2007 at Peachtree Christian Hospice.  Mrs. Smith was born Tuesday, October 14, 1924 in Miami, FL to the late Ira Sherman and the late Agnes Bartley Sherman.  She was a former auxiliary volunteer for the Haywood County Hospital in Waynesville, NC.  She was preceded in death by husband, Joseph Smith, three sisters and one brother.

Survivors include: daughter, Janet Smith of Melbourne, FL; son, Joseph Smith, Jr. of Orange Park, FL; daughter, Geralyn MacLeod of Lawrenceville, GA; daughter, Cathy Conlin of Jacksonville, FL; son, William Smith of Blairsville, GA; sister, Mary Mills of Blairsville, GA; nine grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; niece, Paula Holley; nephews, A.G. Sherman and Charles Mills all of Blairsville.

Memorial services will be held Sunday, November 11, 2007 at 4 p.m. from the Cochran Funeral Home Chapel, Blairsville.  In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations may be made to the American Kidney Foundation.

anthony “tony” lanier dillinger

 

Mr. Anthony “Tony” Lanier Dillinger, age 60, of Blue Ridge Hwy., Blairsville passed away on Monday, October 29, 2007 in the Northeast Georgia Medical Center following an extended illness.  Mr. Dillinger was born on February 8, 1947 in Towns County, the son of the late Albert Dillinger and the late Hazel Hutson Dillinger.  He was a lifelong resident of Union County.  He was employed with the Colwell Construction Co./Vulcan for over thirty-eight years.  Tony enjoyed living life to the fullest.  He was very close to his family and loved to work in his garden and just being outdoors.  He had a keen since of community and truly loved his grandboys, family and neighbors; lending a helping hand was something he was accustomed to.  Riding motorcycles, fishing, gardening with family and friends, watching his rowdy grandboys play and simply going for a Sunday drive would find him at his happiest.  Tony was a member of pleasant Grove Baptist Church.

Surviving Mr. Dillinger are one daughter and son-in-law, Jennifer and Casey Jones of Cisco, GA; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Brenda and Ronald West of Ellijay, Buffy and Kevin Chapman of Blairsville, Barbara and Nulion Towe of Blairsville; three brothers and two sisters-in-law, Dallas and Renee Dillinger of Sparta, TN, Junior and Debbie Dillinger of Blue Ridge, Bruce Dillinger of Blairsville; two grandchildren, Hayden and Holden Jones; many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, October 31, 2007 at 11 a.m. from the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Chester Jones and Rev. Kevin Chapman officiating.  Special music was presented by Elizabeth Plott and the Dillinger family.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Ernest Garrett, Johnny Smith, Sonny Freeman, James Burrell, Terry Burrell and David Abercrombie.  Serving as honorary pallbearers were: Chris Bergan, Austin and Alvin Towe, Shane Towe, Chris Busbee, Derick Dillinger, Jamey Mull, Richard York, Jeff Queen, Grant Hyatt, Josh Bergan and Kenny.  Interment followed in the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.  The family met with friends at the funeral home on Tuesday evening from 6-9 p.m.

Mrs. Barbara Lou Ward, age 68, of Pleasant Hill Drive, Blairsville passed away on Wednesday, October 31, 2007 in Gordon Hospital in Calhoun following a brief illness.  Mrs. Ward was born on December 3, 1938 in Jasper County, IL, the daughter of the late Everett Pagel and the late Gatha Reeves Page.  She had been employed with the North Georgia News for over twenty-two years.  She was preceded in death by a daughter, Myra Jo Rexroad and a sister, Shirley Davis.  Mrs. Ward was of the Protestant faith.

Surviving Mrs. Ward are one daughter and son-in-law, Tammy and Donnie Broome of Fairmount, GA; two sons and daughters-in-law, Kevin and Susan Rexroad of Hayesville, Darrell and Amanda Suggs of Charleston, IL; three sisters and one brother-in-law, Wanda West of Blairsville, Dorothy and Herb Cole and Lois Gaddey all of IL; five brothers and four sisters-in-law, Gene and Doris Page, Delbert and Pauline Pagel, Jerry and Pat Pagel, all of IL, Butch and Debbie Pagel of Blairsville and Kenneth Pagel of IL; seven grandchildren, Brian, Ashley, Myra, Dereck, Sandy, Orren, Conner and John; many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, November 3, 2007 at 2 p.m. from the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Leon McDonald officiating.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers, Butchie Pagel, Kenneth and Brent West, Randy Pagel, Orren Weaver, Dereck Broome, Brian Rexroad and Mike Montgomery.  Interment followed in the House of Prayer Church Cemetery.  The family met with friends at the funeral home on Friday evening from 6-9 p.m.

Mr. John Wedford Parham, age 50, of Elm Rd., Athens, GA formerly of Blairsville, passed away on Monday, October 29, 2007 at his home.  Mr. Parham was born on October 21, 1957 in Athens, GA, the son of the late John Harold Parham and the late Charline Plott Parham.  John loved hunting, fishing, camping working in his garden and just being outdoors.  He was preceded in death by a sister, Gilda Parham Andrews in 1992.  Mr. Parham was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving Mr. Parham are three sons and one daughter-in-law, Josh and Jessica Bishop, Charles Bishop and Matthew Bishop all of Athens, GA; one sister and brother-in-law, Rita and Ira Kyttle of Blairsville; five grandchildren, Cassie and Roman Bishop, Chase, mason and Matthew Dowdy, Jr; nephews, Robert Parham, John Michael Andrews and Conway Casper; many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, November 4, 2007 at 2 p.m. from the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Hubert Legg officiating.  Special music was presented by Ken and Elaine Young.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers, Brandon and Benjamin Silmon, Roger and Robert Parham, John Andrews and Conway Casper.  Interment followed in Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.  The family met with friends at the funeral home on Saturday evening from 6-8 p.m.

dr. howard van ness morter

 

Dr. Howard Van Ness Morter, age 91, of Blairsville, GA, son of Dr. Clyde W. Morter and Edith Watts Morter, both deceased as well as his sister, Elizabeth M. Hayes and nephew, Stephen Clyde Hayes.  He was born, grew up, went to school and practiced his specialty of Otolaryngology in Milwaukee, WI until he retired in 1975 and moved to North Palm, Beach, FL then moved to Blairsville, GA in 1978.  He was well known locally as a volunteer AARP Instructor for the Defensive driving Course, and gave the course for years in the United Community Bank Activity Room and Branan Lodge.  He is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin and the Medical College of Wisconsin (formerly Marquette University Medical School), where he was an Assistant Professor Emeritus.

He was Captain in the Army Medical Corps in WWII where he was the Commanding Officer of a Medical Hospital Ship Platoon (SEP), which cared for the wounded returning to the U.S. on transports, and spent time in hospitals in Esprito Santo New Hebrides and New Guinea between four trips across the Pacific Ocean.  Then the Platoon was transferred to the East Coast and he crossed the Atlantic eight times between England and the US.  He was awarded a Bronze Star for service in the Atlantic-Pacific Theater.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth Souther Towry-Morter; three sons, Howard Guy and Susan of Cedarburg, WI, Clyde w. and Julie of Woodstock, IL, David and Marita of Steamboat Springs, CO; four grandchildren, Molly Currie, Andrew,  Reece and Lucas Morter; two step-sons, Charles Adams of Juno,  FLL and John Towry of Columbia, SC; two step-daughters, Paula Towry and Linda Najarian both of the Atlanta area; three step-grandchildren, Aida Kenyon of East Point, GA, Oshine Najarian of Douglasville, GA, Caitlin Adams of Juno, FL; four great-grandchildren, Madeleine Kenyon, Susanna Currey, Charles Currey and Tucker Morter.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 10k, 2007 at 11:30 a.m. from the funeral home chapel with the Rev. George Cline officiating.  The family will meet with friends following the services.  IN lieu of flowers, if you wish, the family requests that memorials may be made to the Union County Historical Society in Mr. Morter’s memory.

nellie ruth shepherd

 

Mrs. Nellie Ruth Shepherd, age 86, of Wesley Mountain Drive, Blairsville passed away on Monday, October 29, 2007 in the Life Care Center of Ducktown, TN following an extended illness.  Mrs. Shepherd was born on February 3, 1921 in Athens, GA, the daughter of the late Goodman Brackett and the late Emma Galloway Brackett.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Doyle Shepherd in 1995; a son, Johnny Shepherd in 2005; three brothers, Neil, Harris and Darwin bracket.  I lost my mother, but Heaven has gained an Angel!  Her light will shine from Heaven.  Mrs. Shepherd was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving Mrs. Shepherd are one daughter and son-in-law, Lynn B. and Sheridan Chambers of Murphy, NC; granddaughters, Christina Chambers, Joy Shepherd, Angie Worley and Lisa Kay; grandsons, Michael Chambers and Colby Shepherd; great-grandsons, Waylon Rete and Kaleb Kay; sister-in-law, Mattie Brackett (who was like a sister); nephew, Ricky Harkins; daughter-in-law, Shirley Shepherd; many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, November 1, 2007 at 2 p.m. from the funeral home chapel with the Rev. James T. Paul officiating.  Special music was presented by U.E. and Dorothy Sampson.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers, Sheridan Chambers, Michael Chambers, Ricky Harkins, Dalton Kay, Colby Shepherd and Larry Helton.  Interment followed in the Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church Cemetery.  The family met with friends at the funeral home on Wednesday evening from 6-9 p.m.

linda sue swain

 

Miss Linda Sue Swain, age 60, of Robertson Circle, Blairsville passed away on November 1, 2007 in Chestatee Regional Hospital in Dahlonega following an extended illness.  Miss Swain was born on December 4, 1946 in Pahokee, FL, the daughter of the late Harry Lee Swain and the late Jessie Mae Henderson Swain.  Linda was a very special person who loved everyone and anyone she met became a friends.  Linda was of the Catholic faith.

Surviving Miss Swain are one sister and brother-in-law, Gay and Andy Jaslowski of Blairsville; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Harry and Lorretta Swain and Nancy Swain of Savannah, GA; nieces and nephews, Cheryl Jaslowski of Blairsville, Michael and Chie Swain of San Jose CA, mark Swain of Palm Beach Co., FL, Michele Jackson of palm Beach County, Jason Swain of NJ; several grand-nieces, nephews; many other relatives and friends also survive.

A memorial service will be held at a later date and will be announced.  In lieu of flowers if you wish, the family requests that memorials may be made to the American Heart Association in miss Swain’s memory.
