floyd chastain

 

Mr. Floyd Chastain passed away on Friday, October 24, 2003.  Mr. Chastain was a man to whom family and country meant everything.  Born on May 25, 1923, in Towns County Georgia, the son of John O. Chastain and Katie Bradley Chastain, he was the oldest of fifteen children.  Mr. Chastain was inducted into the U.S. Army in January 1943 and served until October 1945.  He served with COF 2nd CAVRCN SO (MECZ) through Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe and achieved the rank of Staff Sergeant.  He was awarded the EAMET Campaign Medal with 5 bronze service stars, the Bronze Star and a good conduct medal.  Mr. Chastain was very proud of his service to his country and took his duties in the Army very seriously.  In a citation accompanying the award of the Bronze Star, it states in part that he “distinguished himself by meritorious service the period 3 August 1944 to February 1945 in France and Luxembourg.  Sgt. Chastain’s earnest work and desire to do the utmost for the well being of the men of his company won him the appreciation of all the men and officers in his organization.”  After returning home from the service, Mr. Chastain worked at the Tennessee Copper Company until his retirement.

Mr. Chastain was preceded in death by his loving wife of 43 years, Della B. Chastain, in November 2001.  He is survived by his children, Jerry McHan of Atlanta, GA., Joyce Rogers of Blairsville, GA., Jack McHan of Pinedale, WY., Shirl Stepp of Blue Ridge, GA., and Pat Bobo of Shady Dale, GA; eleven grandchildren; seventeen great grandchildren; three brothers and three sisters also survive.

charles herschel brantley

 

Mr. Charles Herschel Brantley, age 70, of Blairsville, GA., passed away Thursday, November 6, 2003 at the Murphy Medical Center, Murphy, N.C.

Mr. Brantley was born Thursday, April 13, 1933 in Washington County, GA., a son of Rufus and Annie Lee Lovett Brantley.  He had moved here in March 2003 from Pensacola, Fla., where he worked for lumber companies from 1974-2003.  He lived and worked from 1960-1973 with Elder Building Supply.  He was a member and deacon of Rock Springs Primitive Baptist Church in Lithonia, GA.  He was a U.S. Army veteran.

Survived by his wife, Betty DePew Brantley, of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Melanie and Howard Leftin of Dallas, TX; three brothers, Rufus C. Brantley of Atlanta, GA., James W. Brantley of Dunwoody, GA., and Dan Brantley of Stockbridge, GA; and a granddaughter, Lauten Leftin.

Funeral services were held at 2:00 pm on Monday, November 20, 2003 from the Cochran Funeral Home Chapel with Elder Jerry M. Hunt, Sr. officiating.  Interment was in Union Memory Gardens Cemetery.

gusta chastain clement

 

Mrs. Gusta Chastain Clement, age 86, of Snellville, GA., formerly of Blairsville, Union County, GA., passed away Wednesday, November 5, 2003 at Emory Eastside Medical Center in Snellville.

Mrs. Clement was born in Morganton, Fannin County, GA., on January 25, 1927, a daughter of the late George W. and Azaline Towery Chastain.  She was a member of Philadelphia Baptist Church.  She lived in Atlanta for many years before moving to Grayson, GA., to be near her sons and their families.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Raphael. L. Clement, in 1991.

She is survived by sons and daughters-in-law, Jeff and Joyce Clement and Gerald and Martha Clement, all of Snellville, GA; grandchildren, Bart Clement of Snellville, GA., Brad and Heather Clement of LaVerne, CA., Stephanie Clement of Snellville, GA., Shannon and Steve Bardsley of Marietta, GA., Barry Clement of Atlanta, GA., and Andy Clement of Snellville, GA; one great granddaughter, Christine Clement of Lilburn, GA; two sisters, Mrs. Reba Patterson of Blairsville, GA., and Mrs. Myrtle Rhodes of Blue Ridge, GA; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held Friday, November 7, 2003 at 2:00 pm at the Chapel of Cochran Funeral Home with Rev. Vernon Davenport officiating.  Music was provided by the Faith Singers.

Pallbearers were Bart Clement, Brad Clement, Barry Clement, Andy Clement, George Emerson and David Emerson.  Interment was in Union Memory Gardens, Blairsville, GA.

Cochran Funeral Home of Blairsville was in charge of arrangements.

carl f. byers

 

Mr. Carl F. Byers, age 95, of Blairsville, GA., passed away Thursday, November 6, 2003 at the Union County Nursing Home.

Mr. Byers was born in Union County, GA., on Friday, September 25, 1908, a son of Fitzhugh and Delia Lance Byers and lived in Blairsville and Mineral Bluff most of his life.  He had worked as a copper miner and was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in the European theater, mainly in Germany.  He was preceded in death by a son, Everett Byers, in 1950.

Survivors include five sons, Loyd Byers of Blue Ridge, GA., Frank Byers of Woodstock, GA., Garnett Byers of Blairsville, GA., Junior Byers of Woodstock and Hoyt Byers of Lake Park, GA; four daughters, Irene McAuliffe of Blairsville, Imogene Green of Blue Ridge, Inez Allen of Ellijay and Mary Ann McFalls of Hiram, GA; two sisters-in-law, Dorothy Byers and Dorothy Byers, both of Blairsville; twenty one grandchildren; twenty six great-grandchildren and eleven great-great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 2:00 pm on Sunday, November 9, 2003 at the Cochran Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Charles Neal officiating.  Music was provided by Ken and Elaine Young.  Interment was in Toccoa Baptist Church Cemetery in Fannin County.  Serving as Pallbearers were Johnny Garren, Thomas McAuliffe, Randy Green, Brian Byers, Larry Byers, Jeremy Harvey, Brian Johnson and Raymond Byers.

roger lee corn

 

Mr. Roger Lee Corn, 58, a resident of Lake City, Florida, died Monday, October 20, 2003 after an extended illness.  Mr. Corn had lived in Lake City for the past 29 years, coming from Atlanta, GA.  He was a veteran of the Vietnam war, having served in the United States Air Force.  Mr. Corn was an outstanding employee with the Gold Kist Company, where he was a Division Accounting manager for Florida and had worked for the company for over thirty years.  He made a significant impact on developing new management personnel and in the 1980’s he was on the cutting edge of the introduction of computer technology to the Gold Kist Company.  Because of his knowledge and expertise in this area, all new computer systems used by the Gold Kist Company were first implemented through the Live Oak facility.

Mr. Corn enjoyed old movies, fishing, golfing, woodworking, gourmet cooking and reading.  He was also a loving a devoted father, brother and son.  He is survived by his Aunt and Uncle, who raised him, Roy and Edith Corn, Blairsville, GA; Step Mother, Kay Corn of Mineral Bluff, GA; two daughters, Cheryl Corn and Patricia Corn, both of Gainesville, Florida; two sons, Robert Davidson of Gainesville, Florida, Michael (Teisha) Davidson of Lake City, Florida; five sisters, Louise Corn of Canton, GA., Glenda Corn of Roswell, GA, Joan (Cookie) Fossell of Blue Ridge, GA., Vickie Rhodes of Mineral bluff, GA., Ann Pilsbury of Mineral Bluff, GA; two brothers, Ricky Corn of Canton, GA., and Lynn Corn of Morganton, GA; and two grandchildren.

Memorial services for Mr. Corn are scheduled for Sunday, November 9, 2003 at 2:00 pm at Confidence United Methodist Church, 6750 Confidence Church Road (off S.R. 325) Blairsville, GA.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to Hospice of North Central Florida, 1900 Florida Gateway Center Blvd., Lake City, Florida, 32024.

mr. william arthur seymour

 

Mr. William Arthur Seymour, age 89, of Blairsville, GA died Wednesday, November 5, 2003 at his home after several years of declining health.

Mr. Seymour was born on Monday, December 1, 1013 in Manhattan, NY, the only child of Arthur and Margaret Smith Seymour.  He and his wife moved to Blairsville in 1983 from Ft. Lauderdale, FL, where he had owned and operated National marine Equipment for many years, where he was active in the Coast Guard Auxiliary, serving at Flotilla Commander.  He was also a professional yacht captain.  For several years, the family spent the winters in Everglades City, FL.

Mr. Seymour was an avid aviator before poor health grounded him.  He was a member of OX-5 Aviation Pioneers.

Mr. Seymour held a life membership in the F&AM Lodge in Greenville, AL.  Locally, he had been active in both Scottish and York rites.  He was a charter member of the Appalachian Shrine Club and had served as Worthy Patron of the Order of Eastern Star.

Surviving are his wife, pat of the home; sons, Donald Scott Seymour of Gainesville, GA and William “Bud” Seymour of Blairsville; daughters, Wendy Seymour of Blairsville and Bonnie Maragos of Santa Cruz, CA; step-daughters, Debra Dean of Keyport, NJ and Carol Bernick of Mary Ester, FL; their spouses and children.

Memorial services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, November 10, 2003 at St. Clares’s Episcopal Church in Blairsville, followed by Masonic Rites presented by the Allegheny Lodge.

della mae grizzle carder

 

Mrs. Della Mae Grizzle Carder, age 91, of Grizzle Creek Rd., Suches, GA., passed away on Sunday, November 2, 2003 in the New Horizon West Health Care Center in Gainesville, following an extended illness.  Mrs. Carder was born on July 22, 1912 in Union County, the daughter of the Francis Elze Grizzle and the late Dollie Thomason Grizzle.  She was a native and lifelong resident of Union County and was a member of the Valley Baptist Church.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Carder in 1982.

Surviving Mrs. Carder are one daughter and son-in-law, Inez and Loy Fortenberry of Marietta; tow sons and daughters-in-law, Harold and Nancy Carder of Murryville, GA., Hershel and Wylean Carder of Winder, GA; one brother, Auther Grizzle of Suches; six grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren; many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, November 4, 2003 from the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Donald Tritt officiating.  The following gentlemen served as Pallbearers, Mike Fortenberry, Fred Grizzle, Doug Grizzle, Allen Carder, Milton Chumler, Jamie Chumler and Steven Wiley.  Interment followed in the Coopers Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.

Master Dakota Thomas Mitchell, infant son of Steve and Anna Mitchell, passed away November 7, 2003.

In addition to his parents, survivors include, one half brother, Cassidy Denvil of Villa Rica, GA; one half sister, Cherokee Sky New also of Villa Rica, GA; grandparents, Christene Mitchell of Young Harris, GA; Tina Martin and Lee Parker.

Funeral services were held at Old Union Baptist Church on Tuesday, November 11, 2003 at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Bradley Knight officiating.  Interment was in the Old Union Baptist Church Cemetery.
