            Mr. Warren Taft Patton, age 74, of Gordon Thomas Rd., Blairsville passed away at his home on Friday, November 1, 2013 following an extended illness. He was born October 26, 1939 in Blairsville to the late Lawrence Taft and Hattie Marie (Warren) Patton. Taft was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He lived in Cumming, GA for several years and moved back here in 1998. He loved riding his tractor and working on his farm, and working on cars. Taft also loved deer hunting. He was preceded in death also by his first wife, Gladys Dyer Patton in 1978, sister, Lorretta Smith, brothers, Erroth Patton and Tasker Patton. Taft was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church.

            Survivors include his wife of thirty-four years, Maveline Phillips Patton of Blairsville, GA; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Alicia and John Tomberlin, Ashley and Cameron West and Amanda Patton all of Blairsville, GA; sister and brother-in-law, Vendetta and Neil Wright of Blairsville, GA; grandchildren, Cheyanne Gibson, Morgan Gibson, Makayla Patton and Canaan West; nieces, nephews and family survive.

            Funeral services were held Monday, November 4, 2013 at 2 P.M. at Mountain View Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Steve Ware and Rev. Jim Gray officiating. Pallbearers were Bob Goins, Buddy Goins, Donald Pirkle, Glen Davenport, Blake Fradie and Hank McClure. Interment followed in Meadow View Cemetery. The family received friends at the funeral home on Sunday from 5 until 9 p.m.

robert lee knopp

 

            Robert Lee Knopp, resident of Blairsville, GA, stayed active through the end of his long and fulfilling life. His family likes to think: he just wore out, completed his life and passed away peacefully on November 7, 2013. He was 96 years old. Mr. Knopp was a transmission mechanic most of his life, but could fix about anything. He loved working in the yard, listening to music, and holding his precious little dog, Boy.
            Mr. Knopp is preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth Belle Knopp, to whom he was married for 59 years. He is also preceded in death by daughter, Pamela Lynn Mace who resided in Towson, MD. He is survived by son, Robert Knopp, Jr. of Arbutus, MD, and his wife, Debra Knopp (Moore) and daughter, Denise Marie Seymour (Knopp) of Conyers, GA and her husband, Wayne Seymour. Mr. Knopp is also survived by seven grandchildren: Jennifer, Joshua, Sandra, Jeffrey, Megan, David, and Katelyn, and by six great grandchildren: Nathan, Dodge, Tess, Jane, Sawyer, and Camden. Also, surviving Mr. Knopp are numerous brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, one in particular, Nancy Groen, who was a devoted caretaker to him.

            A viewing took place on Sunday, November 10, 2013 from 4 - 6 PM at Cochran Funeral Home, Blairsville, and Mr. Knopp’s funeral was on Monday, November 11, 2013 at 11 AM, also at Cochran’s Funeral Home, Blairsville with Rev. Waymon Lovell officiating. Interment followed in Union Memory Gardens with the following gentlemen serving as pallbearers: Josh Seymour, Jeff Seymour, David Knopp, Larry Swanson, John Michael Moore, and Wayne Seymour.

james billy baker

 

          Mr. James Billy Baker, age 71, of Blue Ridge Hwy., Blairsville, GA passed away, Tuesday, November 5, 2013 at his home following an extended illness. He was born March 23, 1942 in Gainesville, GA to the late Ralph and Willie Bell (Ferguson) Baker. He had lived here for the past 13 years coming from Gainesville, GA. James was an avid racing fan. He drove 26 years with UPS with a perfect driving record. He was inducted into the Circle of Honor with UPS. James was preceded in death by brothers: Clarence, Claude, John Henry and Daniel Baker; great grandson, Eli Baker. He attended the House of Prayer Church.

            Survivors include his wife of 28 years, Trudy Baker of Blairsville, GA, children: Jimmy and Sharon Baker of Gainesville, GA, Eddie Baker of Homer, GA, Mark and Rhonda Baker of Buford, GA, Kendall Baker of Gainesville, GA, Dustin Baker of Athens, GA, Derrick Baker of Blairsville, GA and Karl Gibbs of Blairsville, GA, sisters: Jonell Pirkle of Cumming, GA, Ruby and Phillip Cagle of Oakwood, GA; brother, Clinton and Diane Baker of Lula, GA; 15 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

            Funeral services were held Wednesday, November 6, 2013 at 2 p.m. at Mountain View Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Jerry Helton and Rev. Terry Sosebee officiating. Music was by Kim Thomas. Pallbearers were Jimmy Coffee, Ernest Head, Ricky Abercrombie, Wayne Abercrombie, Neal Rusk and Leonard Sosebee. Interment was in the House of Prayer Cemetery. The family received friends at the funeral home on Tuesday evening from 6 until 9 p.m.

virgil "junior" dockery

 

            Mr. Virgil “Junior” Dockery, age 70, of Dockery St., Hiawassee, GA passed away Tuesday, November 5, 2013 at his home following a brief illness. He was born June 28, 1943 in Union County, GA, and was a lifelong resident of Union and Towns counties. Junior was a loving son, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was a Timber Cutter all of his life who was most comfortable outdoors. He liked to hunt and fish. Junior was preceded in death by his wife, Lillie (Helton) Dockery in 2005 and his father, Virgil Dockery, Sr. in 2010. He was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church.

            Survivors include his mother, Mary Dockery of Young Harris, GA; son, Tommy and Sherry Dockery of Young Harris, GA; sisters: Frances and Harold Henderson of Young Harris, GA and Jessie and Ricky Davis of Blairsville, GA; brother, James and Tillie Dockery of Lakewood, GA; 5 grandchildren, Brian Nichols-Dockery, Beth Nichols-Dockery, Jamey Dockery, Hannah Dockery and Heather Dockery, 3 great grandchildren; friend and neighbor, Dale Alberry.

            Funeral Services were held Saturday, November 9, 2013 at 11 a.m. at Mountain View Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Jimmy Rogers officiating. Pallbearers were Bryan Taylor, B.J. Taylor, Jamey Dockery, Dusty Patterson, Scott Norton and Marty Dockery. Interment followed in Ebenezer Baptist Church Cemetery. The family received friends at the funeral home Friday evening from 6 until 9 p.m.

            Mrs. Beverly J. Lichtenberger, age 87, a resident of Blairsville, GA,  passed away Tuesday, November 5, 2013, following an extended illness. She was born December 17, 1925 in Sandusky, OH to the late Herman and Hermine (Gast) Binsack. She moved to this area 10 years ago from Palm Coast, FL. Mrs. Lichtenberger was a member of the Mansfield Choral Society, played the dulcimer, and was an amateur watercolorist.  She was a loving wife and mother.  She was preceded in death by her husband, James B. Lichtenberger in June 2013. Mrs. Lichtenberger was of the Christian Faith.

Survivors include children: Glen B. Lichtenberger of Geneva, OH, Rae and Alan Breed of Mineral Bluff, GA, and Jim and Natalia Lichtenberger of Mobile, AL.

A private family service will be held in the spring. In lieu of flowers make memorials to her favorite charity www.newmissions.org

            Mrs. Frieda Helene Oswald, age 85, of Loudermilk Road, Blairsville passed away Friday, November 8, 2013 at Kennestone Hospital in Marietta, GA following an extended illness. She was born in Munich, Germany on December 14, 1927 to the late Wilhelm and Centa (Kratzer) Sterflinger. Mrs. Oswald was preceded in death by a sister Matilda Sterflinger Dengl. She was of the Catholic Faith.

            Survivors include children, Rose Marie and Pete Birdwell of Murphy, NC, Fred and Emma Oswald of Lakeland, FL and Lisa and Richard David of Blairsville, GA, grandchildren, Robert Neblett, Peter Oswald, Richard Neblett, Desiree Oswald, Ronald Neblett, Gabriel Davis, Sherri Lynne Birdwell and Kris Oswald, ten great grandchildren also survive.

            Graveside services were held Sunday, November 10, 2013 at Meadow View Cemetery with Deacon John Paul officiating. Pallbearers were Rick Davis, Peter Oswald, Gabe Davis, Pobby Neblett, Rick Neblett and Ronnie Neblett.

william fl. schultz

 

            Rev. William F. Schultz, age 91, of Blairsville, GA, passed away Tuesday, November 5, 2013, at his home following an extended illness.

He was born July 14, 1922 in Tarpon Springs, FL, to the late Edward and Anna (Bettker) Schultz. Rev. Schultz was the founding pastor of All Saints Lutheran from 1990 – 1996. He served in the ministry from 1965 to 1988, a total of 23 years.

He retired from the U. S. Air Force as Master Sergeant and served during WWII in the 801st/ 492nd Bombard Group (Carpetbaggers),

Rev. Schultz was preceded in death by a sister Emma Tsakonis and brothers Gus, Herman, Otto, Arnold, Ralph and Reinhold Schultz.

            Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Doris Schultz of Blairsville, GA, children, Sharrill and Alan Lottmann of Blairsville, GA and FredErick Schultz of Ormond Beach, FL, and brother, Ewald and Ruth Schultz of Orlando, FL.

            Funeral services were held Friday, November 8, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. at All Saints Lutheran Church with Rev. Dave Wesche officiating. Music was by Carol Blackburn. The family received friends at the church Friday from 10 until 10:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers make memorial donations to the Wounded Warriors at www.woundedwarriorproject.org or to All Saints Lutheran Church.
