MR. PAXTON L. ROGERS

 

Mr. Paxton L. Rogers, age 82, of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away Monday, November 5, 2001, in Union General Hospital, in Blairsville following an extended illness.

Mr. Rogers was born in Union County, Georgia, on Saturday, December 7, 1918, a son of the late Holland Rogers and Cora Rhodes Rogers.  He had been employed at Tennessee Copper Company, and was a lifelong resident of this area.  Mr. Rogers was a member of Liberty Hill United Methodist Church in Fannin County.  Preceding him in death was his half-brother, Arlis Rhodes; half-sister, Esther Wheeler; sister, Opal Patterson; sister, Marie Ballew; and daughter, Mary Sue Rogers.

Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Helen Ballew Rogers, of the home; daughter and son-in-law, Portia and J.E. Corn, of Blairsville; daughter and son-in-law, Kay and Paul Jones, of Blairsville; son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Judy Rogers, of Dallas, GA; daughter and son-in-law, Pamela and Rev. Timothy Garrett, of Blue Ridge, Georgia; brothers: Silvey Rogers and H.A. Rogers, both of Blairsville; sister, Grace Wheeler, of Blairsville; two half-brothers: Luther Rhodes, of Morganton, GA, and Erith Rhodes, of Blue Ridge, GA; five grandchildren: Brandon and Bradley Rogers, both of Dallas, GA; Stacy Jones, of Powder Springs, GA; Nancy Garrett, of Dahlonega, GA; and Kayla Garrett of Blue Ridge; three great grandchildren, many nieces, nephews and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held Thursday, November 8, 2001, at 11 a.m., from the chapel of Cochran Funeral Home, with Rev. Vernon Davenport, and Rev. Timothy Garrett officiating.  Special music was presented by The Faith Singers and Mrs. Dorothy Pickelsimer.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Tim Garrett, J.E. Corn, Paul Jones, Stacy Jones, Bradley Rogers, and Brandon Rogers.  Interment was in Liberty Hill United Methodist Church Cemetery.

MRS. MARGARET ADAMS WISCH

 

Mrs. Margaret Adams Wisch, age 77, of Hidden Lake Rd., Blairsville, passed away on Thursday, November 8, 2001, at her home following an extended illness.  Mrs. Wisch was born on Feb. 24, 1924, in Mayfield, KY, the daughter of the late Charlie Adams and the late Cora McNett Adams.  She was a member of the Lutheran Church of Wisconsin Synod of Lawrenceville.

Surviving Mrs. Wisch are her loving husband of fifty seven years: Ernest Wisch of Blairsville; two daughters and one son-in-law: Phyllis and Gilbert Lang of Port Austin, MI, Linda Neph of Tega Cay, SC; two sons and one daughter-in-law: Donald and Leslyann Wisch of Charlotte, NC, Daniel David Wisch of Boston, MA; one brother: Bill Adams of Ypsi, MI; two sisters: Evelyn Hall of Mayfield, KY, Frances Gream of Mayfield, KY; thirteen grandchildren, five great grandchildren, many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, November 10, 2001 at 2 p.m. from the funeral home chapel with Pastor Mark Hoefner and Minister Jon Woldt officiating.  Special Music was presented by Mrs. Elaine Young.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Nathan Wisch, Gilbert Lang, Bill Lang, Kimberly Wisch, Valerie Wisch and Amanda Neph.  Interment followed in the Union Memory Gardens cemetery.

MR. CLAUDE SMITH BECK

 

Mr. Claude Smith Beck, age 69, of Union County Georgia, passed away Monday, November 5, 2001 at his home following an extended illness.

Mr. Beck was born in Thomaston, Georgia, on September 6, 1932, the son of the late George H. Beck and Bertha Smith Beck.  He had lived in Blairsville since 1969, moving here from Toccoa, Georgia.  Mr. Beck was a veteran of the U.S. navy, a local attorney, and was a member of Sharp Memorial Methodist Church in Young Harris.  He was a member of Blairsville Kiwanis where he had served as president.  Claude earned the rank of Eagle Scout in his youth and he was a former Boy Scout leader and counselor.  He was active in the Union County Republican party, serving as a past chairman.

Preceding him in death was a twin sister, Claudell, and first wife, Beverly Sutter Beck, who passed away in 1991.

Surviving are his wife, Gwen Hedden Back of Blairsville; son, George Lewis Beck of Blairsville; son, Philip Raymond Beck of Alpharetta, GA; son, Wayne Randolph Beck of Duluth, GA; stepdaughters, Emmalyn Dyer and Henrietta Nicole Dyer, both of Blairsville; sisters, Doris Daniels of Eclectic, Alabama and Kathryn Bell of Chicago, Illinois; grandchildren, Amanda Dills and Jeffrey Beck, both of Blairsville; Elizabeth and Meredith Beck, both of Alpharetta, GA; Kenny and Gary Beck, both of Duluth, GA; many other relatives and close friends also survive.

Memorial services were at 2 pm, Sunday, November 11, 2001 at First Baptist Church of Blairsville, with Rev. Danny Parris, and Rev. Mack Riley officiating.  The following gentlemen served as honorary escort to the family: Eddie Graham, Warren Tschappat, Carl Tschappat, Bob Daniels, Robert H. Daniels, Robert Smith, and Edward McGowin.  The cremains will be interred at Revival Baptist Church Cemetery in Blairsville.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggest memorials be made to The American Cancer Society or to The American Lung Association.

MR. RICHARD VALDES

 

Mr. Richard Valdes, age 58, of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away Wednesday, November 7, 2001 in Union County, Georgia from injuries he sustained in an automobile accident.

Mr. Vales was a native of Havana, Cuba, and was employed as an automobile technician.  He had been living in this area for the past sixteen months, moving here from Miami.  Mr. Valdes was of the Catholic faith, and had attended The House Of Prayer Interdenominational Church.

He is survived by his wife, Silvia Valdes, of the home; his mother, Maria Fernandez of Miami; son, Richard Valdes, Jr. of Oviedo, Florida; and daughter, Maggie Alonso of Miami; three step-sons, Clifton Cornelison of Andover, New Jersey, Paul Dean Cornelison and John Glenn Cornelison, both of Cookeville, Tennessee; six granddaughters also survive.

Funeral services were held Friday, November 9, 2001 at am from the chapel of Cochran Funeral Home with Rev. Jerry Helton officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family has suggested memorials be made to the Wilderness Scouts of America, P.O. Box 807, Blairsville, Georgia 30514.

WAYNE W. OWENBY

 

Wayne W. Owenby, 85, of Cordele, GA, died Monday, Nov. 5, at Cordele Health & Rehab Center, Cordele, GA, after a long illness.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Wed., Nov 7, 2001 at Perry Funeral Chapel, Ashburn, GA.  The Rev. Brent Duncan officiated.  Burial was at the Snowridge Cemetery in Ashburn, GA.

He was a native of Union County, GA, the son of the late Joseph Gordon and Laura Adeline Brown Owenby.  Mr. Owenby was a retired painter & carpenter.  He was a member of the Central Baptist Church of Americus, GA.  He was a veteran of World War II, serving the U. S. Army.  He had been a resident of Americus, GA for over 30 years before moving to Cordele this year.

He was preceded in death by one son, Carl S. Owenby of Young Harris, GA.

Surviving are his wife of 32 years, Melzette Powell Owenby, Cordele, GA; one son, Larry Gene Owenby of Young Harris, GA; three daughters: Vickie Buchanan, of Dillsboro, NC, Dorothy Jordon, of DeRidder LA, and Shirley Ward, of Whittier, NC; one brother, Burl Owenby, of Canton, NC; three sisters: Mary Dockery, of Young Harris, GA, Norma Dockery, of Blairsville, GA, and Azalee Connor, of Gastonia, NC; 16 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

MRS. LYDIA STELLING GARRETT

 

Mrs. Lydia Stelling Garrett, age 78, of Blairsville, GA, passed away Sunday, November 11, 2001, in Union County General Hospital in Blairsville.

Mrs. Garrett was born in Brooklyn, New York, on Tuesday, November 13, 1923, a daughter of the late Herman Claus Stelling and Bertha Virginia Craig Stelling.  She had been living in this area for 21 years, moving here from Rochester, New York.  Mrs. Garrett was an artist, and was associated with Mountain Laurel Arts and Crafts.

She is survived by her husband: Ray Garrett, of the home; daughter and son-in-law: Lynn and Dennis McCrossen, of Tucson, Arizona; daughter and son-in-law: Dale and Sandy Edwards, of Flemington, NJ; son and daughter-in-law: Alan and Patty Garrett, of Caledonia, NY; brother: Craig Stelling, of Niantie, Connecticut; granddaughters: Kimberly Edwards, Stacey Edwards, Emily Donovan, and Anna Stevenson; great granddaughters: Madison and Natalie; friends and other relatives also survive.

MRS. JOYCE DARLENE LUNSFORD CRAWFORD

 

Mrs. Joyce Crawford, age 69, of Blairsville, GA, passed away Saturday, November 10, 2001, in Chatuge Regional Nursing Home in Hiawassee.

Mr. Crawford was born in Fulton County, GA, on Tuesday, may 10, 1032, a daughter of Clara Belle Spain Lunsford and the late Abner Luther Lunsford.  She had been an underwriter for an insurance company.  Mrs. Crawford was a member of First Baptist Church of Blairsville, and was active in the Women’s Missionary Union, where she had held various offices.  Mrs. Crawford had served as the Director of the Nottley River Association.  She had served in Union General Hospital Auxiliary.  Joyce had been a member of The Order of the Eastern Star, and at one time, had served in every office, through the District Grand Deputy.  Preceding Joyce in death was her father, Abner Luther Lunsford, and a son, Tim Crawford.

She is survived by her husband of fifty years, Russ Crawford; her mother, Clara Belle Lunsford, of Atlanta; son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Linda Crawford, of Cleveland, Ohio; son and daughter-in-law, Chris and Gail Crawford, of Lexington, NC; daughter and son-in-law, Patti and Mark Fisher, of Winston-Salem, NC; daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Gig Hilton, of Lexington, NC; brothers and sisters-in-law: Gary and Dianna Lunsford, and Wayne and Judy Lunsford, both of Atlanta; eight grandchildren, four great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, November 14, 2001, at 10 a.m. from first Baptist Church of Blairsville.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Jim Dobson, Jim Grantham, Gollie Easter, Ralph Davenport. Leon Davenport, Alvin Fletcher, Don Winn, and Glenn Alderman.  Honorary escort to the family were members of The Order of the Eastern Star.  Interment was in Union Memory Gardens Cemetery in Blairsville.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to Women’s Missionary Union, Camp Pinacle Fund, % First Baptist Church of Blairsville, P.O. Box 2058, Blairsville, GA, 30514.
