rev. horace erwin potts

 

Rev. Horace Erwin Potts, age 77, of Blairsville, GA., passed away Wednesday, November 12, 2003, in Union General Hospital.

Horace was born Thursday, April 7, 1926, in Union County, GA., a son of the late Henley and Della Shope Potts.  He was an old timey preacher and preached his first sermon Saturday, July 11th, 1953 at Trackrock Baptist Church and was ordained on October 16, 1954 at Youngstown Baptist Church.  He pastured several area Baptist Churches including Zebulon, Trackrock, Harmony Grove, Old Liberty, New Harmony, Mt. Pleasant No. 1, Pleasant Grove, Bunker Hill, Philadelphia, Corinth, Youngstown, Ebenezer, Smyrna, Many Forks and West Union.  Horace was also well remembered as a school bus driver for Union County School System.  He was a member of Zebulon Baptist Church.

Horace was preceded in death by three brothers, Howard, Hobert and Earl Potts; two sisters, Imaree Hood and Ruth Souther and a grandson, Matthew Potts.

Survivors include his loving wife of 60 years, Iva Hughes Potts, of the home; daughter and son-in-law, Mary and David Burnette of Blairsville, GA; sons and daughters-in-law, Rev. Ray and Sue Potts, Rev. Michael and Linda Potts, all of Blairsville; sister, Nova Lee nation of Blairsville; grandchildren, Robert and Tina Burnette, of Dover, Tennessee, Marc and Misty Burnette of Blue Ridge, GA., Christal and Mark Chastain, of Blue Ridge, GA, Andrew Burnette of Blairsville, Tracy Potts of Blairsville, Gerald and Tori Potts of Blairsville, Jeffrey and Jennifer Potts of Blairsville; great grandchildren, Cheyenne and Ashley Burnette, Kevin, Zachary and Will Potts; sister-in-law, Reva Potts of Young Harris, GA; several nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services were held Friday, November 14, 2003 at 2:00 pm at Zebulon Baptist Church with Rev. Hoyt Brown, Rev. Tommy Jenkins and Rev. Ray Potts officiating.  Music was provided by Ned Wilcoxon, Rev. Jack Cochran, Haley Howell and Rev. Leon Henderson.

Pallbearers were Robert Burnette, Marc Burnette, Andrew Burnette, Gerald Potts, Jeffrey Potts, Marc Chastain and Timmy Hilton.  Honorary Pallbearers were all of his preacher friends.  Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Cochran Funeral Home of Blairsville was entrusted by the family with the arrangements.

MR. william thomas robbins

 

Mr. William Thomas Robbins, age 60, of Deer Haven Road, Blairsville, passed away on Tuesday, November  11, 2003 in the Northeast Georgia Medical Center following a brief illness.

Mr. Robbins was a veteran of the US Army.  He was employed as an x-ray technician in both Maryland and Florida before his retirement.  Mr. Robbins was of the Methodist faith.

Surviving Mr. Robbins are his loving wife of thirty eight years, Rosalie Schmidt Robbins of Blairsville; mother, Ada Robbins of Blairsville; two son and one daughter-in-law, Chris and Dana Robbins, Damion Robbins of Blairsville; one daughter, Andrea Robbins of Blairsville; one sister, Ada Lee Helmbright of Ohio; four grandchildren, Braedyn, Kobi, Kyler and Ivy Robbins of Blairsville, many other relatives and friends also survive.

Memorial services were held on Saturday, November 15, 2003 at 2 p.m. from the Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Eddie Herring officiating.  In lieu of flowers if you wish, the family requests that memorials may be made to the Relay For Life or The Tom Robbins Memorial Fund c/o Dept. of Family and Children services, P.O. Box 220, Blairsville, GA 30514 in Mr. Robbins’ memory.

MR. william arthur seymour

 

Mr. William Arthur Seymour, age 89, of Blairsville, GA died Wednesday, November 5, 2003 at his home after several years of declining health.

Mr. Seymour was born on Monday, December 1, 1913, in Manhattan, NY, the only child of Arthur and Margaret Smith Seymour.  He and his wife moved to Blairsville in 1983 from Ft. Lauderdale, FL, where had owned and operated National Marine Equipment for many years, where he was active in the Coast Guard Auxiliary, serving as Flotilla Commander.  He was also a professional yacht-captain.  For several years, the family spent the winters in Everglades City, FL.

Mr. Seymour held a life membership in the F&AM Lodge in Greenville, AL.  Locally, he had been active in both Scottish and York rites.  He was a charter member of the Appalachian Shrine Club and had served as Worthy Patron of the Order of Eastern Star.

Surviving are his wife, Pat of the home; sons, Donald Scott Seymour of Gainesville, GA and William “Bud” Seymour of Blairsville; daughters, Wendy Seymour of Blairsville and Bonnie Maragos of Santa Cruz, CA; step-daughters, Debra Dean of Keyport, NJ and Carol Bernich of Mary Esther, FL: their spouses and children.

Memorial services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, November 10, 2003 at St. Clares’s Episcopal Church in Blairsville, followed by Masonic Rites presented by the Allegheny Lodge.

lloyd thomas mcClure

 

Mr. Lloyd Thomas McClure, age 77, of Blairsville, GA., passed away Tuesday, November 11, 2003 in Chatuge Regional Nursing Home in Hiawassee.

Mr. McClure was born in Cherokee County, NC., on Sunday, June 27, 1926, a son of the late Tom and Amy Lovingood McClure.  He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and served in the Pacific.  Mr. McClure had lived in this area for most of his life and was a member of Happy Top Baptist Church.  He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Virginia Richards; brothers, Port, Jerry, Albert and Noah McClure.

Survivors include his wife, Minnie Morgan McClure of Blairsville; daughters, Joyce Ball of Marietta, GA., Ruth McClure, of Hendersonville, NC., Louise Whitmire, of Marietta, GA; sons, David McClure of Columbia, SC., and Gary McClure, of Hoschton, GA; stepsons, Charles Hunter, of Buford, GA., Joe Bridges, of Cumming, GA., Ronnie Bridges, of Chatsworth, GA., James Bridges, of Blairsville, GA., Michael Bridges, of Cumming, GA; stepdaughters, Barbara McCain, of Anderson, SC., Faye Thompson, of Cumming, GA; brothers, Hadley McClure of Blairsville, Bobby McClure, of Blairsville; sisters, Pearle Richards, of Morganton, GA and Emma Jane Little, of Murphy, NC; eleven grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and many friends and other relatives also survive.

Funeral services were held on Friday, November 14, 2003 at 11:00 am from the chapel of Cochran Funeral Home in Blairsville with Rev. Loys Waters and Rev. Jerry Karnes officiating.  Special music was presented by Ken and Elaine Young.  The following gentlemen served as Pallbearers, James Bridges, Charles Hunter, Joc Bridges, Ronnie Bridges, Michael Bridges and Tony McCain.  The following gentlemen served as honorary escort to the family, Jimmy McClure, Eugene McClure, Lonnie Jones, Darren Bridges, Sammy Henson, W.L. mason, Darrell Bridges and Andrew Thompson.  Burial was held in Mt. Liberty Baptist Church Cemetery in Murphy, North Carolina.

Mrs. Doris Smith, age 83 of, Teague Road, Blairsville, passed away on Thursday, November 13, 2003 at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Cheryl S. and Harry Smith.

She had previously lived at Stonehenge I Assisted Living.  Prior to moving to Blairsville, Mrs. Smith had been a resident of Deland, FL since 1939 and retired from The Department of Elections in Deland.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Gus Basil Smith in 1969.  She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Deland.

Surviving Mrs. Smith are two daughters and sons-in-law, Cheryl and Harry Smith of Blairsville; Janice and Charles Knecht of Winter Park, FL; five grandchildren, Lana Saarela of Denver, CO, Leia Gilbert of Orlando, FL, Kim Engstrom of Lake Helen, FL, Keith Forrest of Greenville, SC, and Kristi Esterline of Lawrenceville, GA.; nine great grandchildren and one great great grandchild, many other relatives and friends also survive.

Graveside services were held on Sunday, November 16, 2003 from the Oakdale Cemetery in Deland, FL with the Rev. Charles Presley officiating.  In lieu of flowers if you wish, the family requests that memorials be made to Regency Hospice, P.O. Box 494, Hiawassee, GA 30546 in Mrs. Smith’s memory.

Major Donald W. McCulley, USMC, Ret. Died on Friday, November 7, 2003, at his home in Blairsville, GA.

Major McCulley was a native of Shellsburg, IA.  He was born June 20, 1936 at rural Shellsburg to E. Donald and Beulah Huyek McCulley.  He graduated from Shellsburg High School, received his Bachelor’s degree from the University of Northern Iowa at Cedar Falls, IA.  He taught at Jessup High School, Jessup, IA and also was a faculty member at Northern Iowa University in Cedar Falls, IA.  In later years he attended East Carolina University where he completed the High School Administrator’s Certification Program.

Major McCulley was a United States Marine Corps Artillery Officer who retired following 21 years of service.  He was a decorated Viet Nam veteran, receiving the Bronze Star while in the service of his country.  After retiring from the Marine Corps, he returned to the educational field.  He served as a French and World History teacher for several years, and then as the Assistant Principal at White Oak High School in Jacksonville, NC for 15 years.  Throughout his life he was an active competitor in shotgun, pistol and black-powder competitions, as well as a shooting instructor for both the Marine Corps and civilian arms programs.

Survivors include his wife, Margaret F. McCulley; sons, Colin McCulley and his wife Jennifer of Milledgeville, GA; Dale McCulley of Englewood, PA; daughter Anne Marie and her husband Michael Barrett of Inman, SC; four grandchildren, Sean McCulley, Patrick, McCulley, Brittany Barrett, and Kayla Barrett; his former wife Jane Commander McCulley of Englewood, FL; brothers, Roger D. McCulley and his wife Kay of Ramsey, MN; Paul N. McCulley and his wife Yvette of Council Bluffs, IA; and a sister, Margaret S. and her husband Larry Chambers of Cedar Rapids, IA.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, November 22, 2003 at the Blairsville’s Veteran’s Park.  In the event of inclement weather, services will be held at Cochran Funeral Home, 32 Hospital Street, Blairsville, GA.  The family has requested that in lieu of flowers donations may be made to Regency Hospice, P.O. Box 586, Clayton, GA 30525 or to the American Cancer society.  A memorial service will also be held in Iowa at a later date next spring.

Mrs. Eula Marie Seabolt Bruce, better known as “Sue”, age 71 of Suches, GA who passed away on Wednesday, November 12, 2003 at her home.

She was a loving Wife, Mother, Grandmother, Great Grandmother and friend.  Mrs. Bruce was a member of the Friendship #1 Baptist Church.  She was preceded in death by a grandson, Andrew Cole, three brothers and one sister.

Survivors include daughters and son-in-laws, Vicky and Edward Panter of Suches, GA; Carolyn and Arvil Cole of Mineral Bluff, GA; Debbie and Denny Tanner of Blairsville, and Pauline and Edward Stanley of Suches, GA; brother and sister-in-law, Emmett and Ethel Seabolt of Morganton; sister, Edna Crawford of Morganton; two sister-in-laws, Mrs. Evan (Shirley) Seabolt and Mrs. Earl (Sis) Seabolt both of Morganton; nine grandchildren and nine great grandchildren; many nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held conducted on Friday, November 14 at 12 noon from the Friendship #1 Baptist Church with Rev. Charles Abernathy and Rev. Mike England officiating.  Music was by the Friendship Church Choir, Tammy Caylor and Ruth Bramlett.  Interment followed in the Church Cemetery.

mrs. alice elizabeth handy godwin

 

Mrs. Alice Godwin, age 86 of Blairsville, Georgia passed away Wednesday, November 12, 2003 in Union County Nursing Home in Blairsville.

Mrs. Godwin was born in Stuart, Virginia on Thursday, July 19, 1917, a daughter of the late Sparrell J.W. Handy and Ella Nora Rorrer Handy.  She had been a hospital dietary specialist.  Mrs. Godwin had lived for 30 years in the Atlanta-Metro area, and in Suches for 1 year.  For the last 4 years Mrs. Godwin had been a resident of Union County Nursing Home.

Surviving are her daughter and son-in-law, Brenda and Chuck Esposito of Suches, GA; granddaughter and her husband, Trina and Dave Aker of Venice, Fl; granddaughter, Cindy Thompson of Lutz, Fl; grandson and his wife, Ken and Kathy Esposito of Sussex, New Jersey; granddaughter, Christy Colato of Bridgewater, New Jersey; great grandchildren, Nathan and Ashton Aker, Nick, Mike, Chrissy, Julia, and Catie Esposito.  Many other friends and relatives also survive.

Graveside services will be held in North Carolina at a later date.

If you wish, memorial contributions may be made to union County Nursing Home, in memory of Mrs. Godwin.

MR. richard oliver maier

 

Mr. Richard Oliver Maier, age 51 of Blairsville, Georgia passed away Friday, November 14, 2003 in St. Joseph’s Hospital in Atlanta.

Mr. Maier was born in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, on Tuesday, February 19, 1952, a son of the late Oliver Edward Maier, Jr. and Kathrin Pinkerton Maier.  He was a housing construction contractor and had been living in Blairsville for the past 20 years.  Previous residences include Dawsonville, Georgia and Winter Park, Florida.  He was of the Lutheran faith.

Surviving are his companion, Nina King of Blairsville; his mother, Kathrin Maier of Blairsville; children: Jason Richard Maier and Jesse Oliver Maier, both of Blairsville; Erika Jean Maier of Woodstock, Georgia; Audra Leigh Maier and Tonya King, both of Blairsville; brother, Larry Maier of Blairsville; many other relatives and many friends also survive.

Memorial services were held Wednesday, November 19, 2003 at 7 p.m. from the chapel of Cochran Funeral Home in Blairsville.

If you wish, memorial contributions may be made to a fund established at United Community Bank of Blairsville in Richard’s memory.  This fund will help the family with medical expenses.

Mr. Junior R. Davenport, age 74, of Morganton passed away Saturday, November 1, 2003.

He was born in Union County, October 22, 1929, the son of the late Bob and Fleetie Thomas Davenport.  He was a life long resident of this area and a member of the Bethlehem Baptist Church.  He was preceded in death by a son, David davenport in November 2003.

Survivors are his wife, Birdie Beaver Davenport of the home, sons and daughter-in-laws, Danny and Cindy Davenport, and Damon and Vicki Davenport both of Morganton; and daughter-in-law, Janice Davenport of Morganton; grandchildren, Travis Davenport, Nathan Davenport, Dannon Bradburn, Shannon Davenport, Erica Ledford, Eric Davenport, six great grandchildren and a host of friends also survive.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, November 4, 2003 at 2 p.m. from the chapel of the Henry Cochran Funeral Home with Rev. Grady Ray and Rev. Gerald Mathis officiating.  Music was by Saved by Grace.  Interment followed in the Hemptown Baptist Church Cemetery.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Travis Davenport, Nathan Davenport, Eric Davenport, Mark Ramey, Chris Beavers and Kevin Beavers.

MR. william “bill” murray

 

Mr. William (better known as Bill) Joseph Murray, age 70 of Tom Satterfield Court, Blairsville passed away on Sunday, November 16, 2003 at his home following a brief illness.

Mr. Murray was born on September 6, 1933 in Ridgley, TN, the son of the late James Herbert Murray and Ana Lewis Murray.  He was employed with U.S. Steel where he served as manager before his retirement.  He was past president of the Towns County Lions Club, a lifetime member of the Jaycees, a member of the Georgia Mountain Fair Board and a member of the Union County Chamber of Commerce.  He was preceded in death by a brother, James Murray Jr. in 1942.  Mr. Murray was of the Methodist faith.

Surviving Mr. Murray are his loving wife of forty nice years, Jean Eldridge Murray of Blairsville; mother, Ana Murray of Blairsville; one son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Mirja Murray of Blairsville; one daughter and son-in-law, Lisa and Dan Whiteside of Birmingham, AL, many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, November 19, 2003 at 11 a.m. from the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Waymon Lovell officiating.  Special music was presented by the Havenaires.  Interment followed in the Laurel Hills Cemetery in Hiawassee.

lois musgrove howell

 

Mrs. Lois Musgrove Howell, age 79, of Blairsville, Georgia died Monday, November 17, 2003 at Tranquility Hospice in Austell, Georgia, after several months of declining health.

Mrs. Howell was born on April 23, 1924, in Lawyers, Virginia, to Buena and Eugene Musgrove.  She moved to Atlanta, Georgia in 1944 and lived in Marietta, Georgia from 1958 through 2003.

Mrs. Howell worked as a church music director and soloist, voice teacher and held a full time position as a bank employee.  She was employed first by Atlanta Federal S & L, then later by Marietta Federal S & L, which became Georgia Federal and finally First Union.  She held these positions for a combined total of 50 years.  At the time of her death she was a member of Sharp memorial United Methodist Church in Young Harris, Georgia, where she sang in the Chancel Choir.

She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Roger S. Howell, Jr; a daughter, Joy H. Breedlove of Blairsville; a son and daughter-in-law, Gene Howell and Angela Davy Howell of Marietta; four grandchildren, Melissa, Billy and Anna Breedlove and Gene Howell, Jr; one brother; several cousins, nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held at Southcare Funeral Home located at 2201 South Cobb Driver on Tuesday, November 18, 2003 from 7L00 – 9:00 pm;.  A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, November 19 at 2:00 pm at Maple Avenue United Methodist Church in Marietta, Georgia.  Interment will follow at Mountain View Cemetery in Marietta.

Mrs. Eula Mae Brown, age 85, of Decatur, GA., formerly of Blairsville, GA., passed away Sunday, November 9, 2003.

Mrs. Brown was raised in Inman Yards, Atlanta, GA., and was a member of Glenn Haven Baptist Church.  She had been a resident of Blairsville for seven years before returning to Decatur.

Surviving are her daughter and son-in-law, Donna Ruth and Jerry Mowens, of Ellenwood, GA; a grandson, John Thomas Mowens; grandchildren, Carri Ann and Mark Daley and Corrie Elizabeth Mowens.

Graveside services were held Wednesday, November 12, 2003 at 12:00 Noon, at Union Memory Gardens Cemetery in Blairsville with Rev. Stan Berrong officiating.
