Mr. Francis Edward Johnson, age 79, of 12 Point Rd. Blairsville, passed away on Thursday, November 23, 2006 in the Union General Hospital following an extended illness.  Mr. Johnson was born on August 19, 1927 in Detroit, MI, the son of the late William Oscar Johnson and the late Viola Holton Johnson.  He was a veteran of the U.S. navy of WWII.  He retired from the Ford Motor Company after over thirty years of service.  He had been a member of the Bellview Community Volunteer Fire Dept. and a past Moose Club member.  He was preceded; in death by a sister, Shirley Cook.  Mr. Johnson was of the Catholic faith.

Surviving Mr. Johnson are his loving wife of thirty-five years, Nancy Schroeder Johnson of Blairsville; one son and daughter-in-law, Greg and Karyn Johnson of Boca Raton, FL; three step-children, Susanne McCoy of grass Lake, MI, James Huddleston and Timothy Huddleston both of Port Charlotte, FL; one brother and sister-in-law, William and Betty Johnson of Elizabeth, CO; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild, many other relatives and friends also survive.

A memorial service will be held at a later date and will be announced.  In lieu of flowers, if you wish, the family requests that memorials may be made to united Hospice in Mr. Johnson’s memory.

Helen Gwynn Matthews Page, age 91, of Blairsville, GA, died Sunday Nov. 26, 2006 at her home.  Mrs. Page was born on Dec. 3, 1914 in Portsmouth, VA, the daughter of the late Thomas Walter Matthews and Alice Rebecca Toomer.  She lived in Blairsville for thirteen years and was an active member of St. Clare’s Episcopal Church.  Mrs. Page was a graduate of William and Mary College, a Daughter of the King and a Wesley Mountain Wiggle.

Mrs. Page was beloved by family, friends and staff of Branan Lodge and St. Clare’s Episcopal Church.  The family appreciates all who cared for her in her last few years of life.

Survivors include her children, R. Harry Page Jr., Dolly Evans, Alice Duryea, Lela Fasciano, Johnny Jones and the late Terry Page, her 13 grandchildren are, Christopher page, David Page, Patrick Page, Jonathan Page, Jesse Evans, Katie Whitt, Tara Kearns, Aspen Duryea, Quail Duryea, Thorburn Duryea, Jenny Jones, Paige Jones and Melanie Jones, 9 great-grandchildren, many other relatives and friends also survive.

A memorial service will be held at St. Clare’s Episcopal Church, 1272 Ledford Rd., Blairsville, GA, on Saturday December 2, 2006 at 2 pm with the Rev. Susan Johnson officiating.  A reception will follow the services.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to your favorite charity, or to St. Clare’s Episcopal Church in Mrs. Page’s memory.

Mrs. Ella Watkins, age 92, of Suches, GA, died Saturday, November 25, 2006 at her residence following an extended illness.  Mrs. Watkins as a native and lifelong resident of Union County.  She was a homemaker and member of Mt. Pleasant Hill Baptist Church #2 in Suches, GA.

Mrs. Watkins was the daughter of the late Joe and Isabell Harkins Gregory.  She was preceded in death by her husband of sixty-six years, Loy Watkins; infant daughter, Ruth Watkins; brothers, Ellis, Artie, Charlie, Harley, and Arval Gregory; sisters, Ethel Carver and Velma Watkins.

Survivors include her sons and daughters-in-law, Paul Watkins of Calhoun, GA, Fred and Glynda Watkins of Gainesville, GA, Arvel and Sue Watkins of Mansfield, GA; daughters and sons-in-law, Mary and Hugh Reynolds of Cumming, GA, Jean and Warren Jackson of Gainesville, GA, Edna and Jerry Greer of Tifton, GA; sisters, Lula Mae parker of Suches, GA and Emma Lou Blackburn of Blairsville, GA; 18 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren, and a number of other relatives also survive.

Funeral services for Mrs. Watkins were held Tuesday, November 28, 2006 at the Mt. Pleasant Hill Baptist Church in Suches, GA with Rev. William Phillips officiating.  Mrs. Watkins lay in state at the church from 12 noon until 1 p.m.  Interment followed in the church cemetery.  The family received friends at Banister Funeral Home from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday, all day Monday, and again on Tuesday until time of service.

herbert claude (hadacol) smith

 

Mr. Herbert Claude (better known as Hadacol) Smith, age 74, of Ed King Rd. Blairsville passed away on Friday, November 24, 2006 at his home following an extended illness.  Mr. Smith was born on May 13, 1931 in Union County, the son of the late Velt Smith and the late Flora Hill Smith.  He was a veteran of the U.S. Army of the Korean War.  He retired from Thurston Motor Lines in 1986 after twenty-one years of service.  He was a native and lifelong resident of Union County.  He was preceded in death by three brothers, Hubert, Houston, and Sylvan Smith.  Mr. Smith was a member of the Ebenezer Baptist Church.

Surviving Mr. Smith are his loving wife of forty-seven years, Betty jean Foster Smith, one daughter and son-in-law, Gina and Robby Brown of Blairsville; five sisters and one brother-in-law, Eloise McClean of Buford, GA, Maxine Lovell of Gainesville, Nena Page of Ellijay, Waine Crutchfield of Roswell, Willa Dean and Jimmy Deaver of Blairsville; one grandson, Brandon Brown of Blairsville, many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, November 26, 2006 at 4 p.m. from the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Harrison Bradley and Rev. Larry Shope officiating.  Special music was presented by the Faith Singers.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers, James Burrell, Joe Stuberfield, Bobby Jackson, Brandon Brown, Harold plot, Johnny Foster, Junior Bridges and Jimmy Messimer.  The following gentleman served as honorary pallbearers, Bill Nichols, Bobby Plott, F.C. Nicholson Vaughn and members of the Appalachian Home Health.  Interment followed in the New Union Baptist Church Cemetery with the North GA Honor Guard conducting Military honors.

Stephany M. Goergen, age 76, of Blairsville, GA, formerly of largo, FL went to be with her Lord on November 19, 2006 at Parkridge Medical Center, Chattanooga, TN after an extended stay.

She was a loving and devoted wife and mother and served her Lord for over 25 years in his Charismatic Renewal.  She was a member of St. William Catholic Church, Murphy, NC.

She was born in Buffalo, NY on December 25, 1929, the daughter of the late Michael Zubrzycki and the late Helen Rozwadowska Zubrzycki.  She was preceded in death by her sister, Emily Siepierski of Buffalo, NY.

Surviving Mrs. Goergen are her loving husband of 55 years Leo M. Goergen; her sons and daughters-in-law David H. Goergen and Barbara E. Goergen and family of Blairsville, GA; Kenneth P. Goergen and Helene V. Goergen and their children Frank and Patrick of Seminole, FL, Thomas M. Goergen and Lavada J. Goergen and their children Christopher, Benjamin, Emil, Zach, and John of Rapid City, SC; her son Stephen R. Goergen of Blairsville, GA; her daughter, Barbara H. Goergen of Blairsville, GA, and her daughter and son-in law Cynthia M. Spaulding and Robert G. Spaulding and their children Jacob, John and Marissa of Blairsville, GA, many great-grandchildren; a brother Henry Zubrzycki of Jasper, NY; a sister Frieda Vetter of Portland, OR and many loving relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at Mountain View Funeral Home of Blairsville, GA on FRIDAY, November 24, 2006 from 6-8 p.m. with a Mass of the Resurrection at St. William Catholic Church in Murphy, NC on Saturday, November 25, 2006, at 11 a.m.

Ethel Sherman, age 91, of Blairsville, GA died Sunday November 19, 2006 at her residence.  A native of Kansas City, MO, she had been living in Union County for the past five years.  She was the daughter of the late Ralph Monford and Nell Goodwin Wyss and the wife of the late Earl J. Sherman, who died July 25, 1998.  She was a retired pre-school teacher having taught for close to 40 years in Miami, FL.  She was a life member of the Rader Memorial United Methodist Church in Miami and was a member of the Mount Zion United Methodist Church in Blairsville.

Surviving are a daughter, Sandra Shenkman of Miami; a son, Gary W. Sherman of West Palm Beach, FL; a brother, Ralph Wyss of Overland Park, KS; three grandchildren, Scott Nelson, Kristin Siron, and Eric Sherman; and eight great-grandchildren.

A private family memorial service will be held at a later date.

Mrs. Leola Dover, age 84, of Blairsville, GA, passed away Wednesday, November 22, 2006 at Lainer Park North E. GA Medical Center.  Mrs. Dover was born Monday, September 11, 1922 in Union County, GA to the late Thomas and Bertha Johnson Pierce.   She was a member of Old Liberty Baptist Church.  Mrs. Dover was preceded in death by her husband William Dan Dover.

Survivors include: daughter & son-in-law, Nedra and William Cheek of Blairsville, GA; son, Niles Dover of Blairsville, GA; sister, Elizabeth Monkus of McDonough, GA; granddaughters, Betty Rogers, and Sandra Watson; four great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Funeral services were held Saturday, November 25, 2006 at 2p.m. from the Chapel of Cochran Funeral Home with the Rev. Harley Hunter, Rev. Stacy Dyer officiating.  Music was provided by Old Liberty Baptist Church Choir.  Interment was in Harmony Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.  Pallbearers were Troy Dyer, Perry Dyer, Danny Stephens, Scott Mckechnie, William Watson, Steve Rhoten.

Mrs. Ruby Sybil Chambers, age 83, of the Murphy Hwy, Blairsville, passed away on Monday, Nov. 20, 2006 in the Union County Nursing Home following an extended illness.  Mrs. Chambers was born on July 26, 1923 in Union County, the daughter of the late Rass Morgan and the late Mary Daniel Morgan.  She was a native and lifelong resident of Union County.  She and her husband owned and operated the Chambers Slaughter House for over thirty-five years.  Mrs. Chambers was a member of the Antioch Baptist Church.

Surviving Mrs. Chambers are her loving husband of sixty-two years, Vernon Chambers of Blairsville, one son and daughter-in-law, James (Yeona) and Ethel Chambers of Blairsville, one daughter, Colean Chambers of Blairsville, three grandchildren, Curtis Teague of Blairsville, Stacy Chambers of Blairsville, Billy Chambers of Blairsville, one great-granddaughter, Kameron Teague of Blairsville, many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Friday, Nov. 24, 2006 at 11 am from the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Tommy Seay officiating. Special music was presented by Carol Renshaw and Heather Henderson.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers, Steve Brown, Glen Henderson, Michael Tate, Bruce Gray, Chuck Tyre and Stacy Chambers.  Interment followed in the Ivy Log Baptist Church cemetery.  The family met with friends at the funeral home on Wednesday evening anytime after 5 pm.

Mrs. Dorothy Aleen Mashburn, age 77, of Gainesville formerly of Blairsville passed away on Monday, November 20, 2006 in the North East Georgia Medical Center following a brief illness.  Mrs. Mashburn was born on May 16, 1929 in Union County, the daughter of the late Garnett L. Owenby and the late Bonnie Mae Erwin Owenby.  She was a native of Union County and had lived in the Gainesville area since 1968.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Wendall O. Mashburn in 1999; a daughter, Brenda Joyce Mashburn; a sister, Mildred Butt; brothers, Bill, Audie, and Charles Owenby Jr.  Mrs. Mashburn was a member of the Antioch Baptist Church.

Surviving Mrs. Mashburn are two daughters and one son-in-law, Thersha Major of Oakwood, GA, Judy and Don Skelly of Aliso Viejo, CA; four sons and daughters-in-law, Morris and Missy Mashburn of Blairsville, Mike and Lisa Mashburn of Blairsville, Jerry and Pam Mashburn of Gainesville, Jack and Laraine Mashburn of Cleveland, GA; four  brothers and sisters-in-law, Dillard and Rose Owenby of Flint, MI, Ray and Betty Owenby of Flint, MI, Jimmy and Jimmie Owenby of Hiawassee, Johnny (Pee Wee) and Gail Owenby of Blairsville; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Brenda and Robert Wallace of Blairsville, Melvalynn and John Ledford of Blairsville, Shirley Brown of Adairsville, GA; ten grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Friday, November 24, 2006 at 2 p.m. from the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Danny Parris officiating.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers, Matthew, Adam, Jody and Travis Mashburn, Chad Sosebee, Ricky Major, Justin Seltrecht and Corey Mallard.  Interment followed in the Ebenezer Baptist Church Cemetery.  The family met with friends at the funeral home on Wednesday evening from 6-8pm.

jack littleton meeks

 

Jack Littleton Meeks, age 88, of Woodstock, GA and formerly of Sandy Springs, GA and Scotch Plains, NJ, died November 19, 2006.  Jack Meeks was born in Blairsville, GA in 1918 and lived here, as well as in New Holland and Gainesville, GA, before attending college.  After graduating as Valedictorian from Gainesville High School, he studied at Georgia Tech before WWII, graduating with a degree in chemical engineering.

During the war he served his country bravely in the South Pacific, leaving the service with the rank of Commander in the United States Navy.  He married Frances Lindsay Kennedy after returning to civilian life and rose in management at proctor & Gamble and the Clorox Company, retiring from the latter in 1983.  Jack Meeks enjoyed playing the organ, clarinet, and saxophone and was an avid photographer and golfer.  He was a wonderful father and an adoring grandfather.

He is survived by his loving children Thomas John Meeks of Coral Gables, FL; Jacqueline Meeks Mozley of Woodstock, GA, and Lindsay Littleton Meeks of Atlanta, GA; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; brother, Charles Meeks of Woolrich, PA; and many nieces and nephews.  Jack will be dearly missed by his family and friends.

Mrs. Reda A. Walker Vodarick, age 78, of Earl Wright Rd., Blairsville formerly of McCandless passed away on Sunday, November 19, 2006 at her home following a brief illness.  Mrs. Vodarick was born on January 27, 1928 in Pittsburgh, PA, the daughter of the late Frank Walker and the late Clara Grimpie Walker.  She was preceded in death by her husband Frank E. Vodarick.  Mrs. Vodarick was a beautician by trade.  She was of the Catholic faith.

Surviving Mrs. Vodarick are three children, Diane Munkus, Dave Vodarick and Ed Vodarick; tow sisters, Helen Greenfield and Jean Cliever; ten grandchildren; eight-great grandchildren; many other relatives and friends also survive.

Mass of Christian Burial was held on Wednesday, November 22, 2006 at 10 a.m. from the St. John and Paul Church in Pittsburgh, PA with interment following in the N.S. Catholic Cemetery.

Mr. George Gaines McCurley, age 87, of Old Sullivan Rd. Blairsville, formerly of Douglasville, GA passed away on Thursday, November 23, 2006 in the Union County Nursing Home following an extended illness.  Mr. McCurley was born on December 18, 1918 in Seneca, SC, the son of the late Doc McCurley and the late Effie Clark McCurley.  Mr. McCurley and his wife, Majorie had made their home in Blairsville since 1988.  He was a veteran of the U.S. Army of WWII.  He retired from Ryder and Central Truck Lines in 1985 after over thirty-five years of service.  Mr. McCurley was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving Mr. McCurley are his loving wife of forty-nine years, Marjorie Sullivan McCurley of Blairsville; step-son and daughter-in-law, Greg and Virginia Donaldson of Prentice, WI; six step-grandchildren, David and Amy Walls, Jorge and Shiloh Pino, Jimmy and Donna Donaldson; several nieces, nephews, cousins and many other relatives and friends also survive.

Memorial services will be held on Monday, December 4, 2006 at 2 p.m. from the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Jimmy Tanner and Rev. Kenneth Zollinger officiating. Interment will follow in the Sharon Presbyterian Cemetery in Hartwell, GA.  In lieu of flowers, if you wish, the family requests that memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Assc. In Mr. McCurley’s memory.

Mr. William Jewell Breedlove, age 75, of Blairsville, GA, passed away Friday, November 24, 2006 in North East Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville, GA.

Mr. Breedlove was born Sunday, august 30, 1931 in Towns County, GA, to the late Homer Breedlove and Maude Patterson Breedlove.  He was preceded in death by brother, R.H. Breedlove, Jr.

Survivors include; daughter, Debra Breedlove of Dahlonega, GA; son & daughter-in-law, Doug and Amy Breedlove of Blairsville, GA; son, Danny Breedlove, of Maryland; brother, Charles Edward Breedlove of Blairsville; granddaughter, Jennifer Breedlove, grandson, Allan Breedlove, grandson, Jeremiah Underwood, and granddaughter, Jessica Underwood.

Funeral services were held Monday, November 27, 2006 at 1 p.m. from the Cochran Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Ray Potts officiating.  Music was provided by The Phillips Family.  Interment followed in Confidence Methodist Church Cemetery.  Serving as pallbearers were the following gentlemen: Steve Odom, Kenny Breedlove, Tony Collins, Bobby Collins, David Miller and Bruce Nichols.

The family received friends at the funeral home from 6-9, on Sunday, November 26.
