Mr. Jewell W. Whitmore, age 78, of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away Friday, November 21, 2003 in Veteran’s Administration Hospital in Decatur, Georgia.

Mr. Whitmore was born was born in Union County, Georgia on Tuesday, June 9, 1925, a son of the late James Gordon Whitmore and Rebecca Bethenie Poteete Whitmore.  He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and served in the European Theatre, receiving a Purple Heart.  Mr. Whitmore was a member of The American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Disabled American Veterans.  He lived most of his life in this area and was a cattle farmer.  A member of Notla Baptist Church, he was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Lois McClure Whitmore, who passed away in 2000.

Surviving are daughters and sons-in-law, Becky and Don Rogers of Blairsville; Sharon and George Hill of Woodstock; Jane and Jerry Anderson of Blairsville; sons and daughters-in-law, Johnny and Cindy Whitmore of Blairsville and Mark and Debbie Whitmore of Murphy, N.C; granddaughter, McKensie Whitmore, also of Murphy; granddaughters and husbands, Vicki and Charlie Davis of Blairsville, Natasha and Shane Harwood of Jasper; grandson and wife, Kevin and Angie Garrett of Blairsville; grandson’s Joe White of Knoxville, Tennessee, Donny Rogers of Blairsville, Alan White of Canton, Johnathan Whitmore of Murphy, N.C., Jeremiah Whitmore, also of Murphy, Jaron Whitmore of Blairsville, Vince Anderson of Mississippi, Gene Anderson of Seattle, Washington, David Anderson of Blairsville, Bobby Anderson of Blairsville, Brandon Anderson of Blairsville, Joe Hill of Kennesaw; great grandson, Cole Charles Davis of Blairsville great granddaughters, Madison Jewel Garrett of Blairsville, Reagan Olivia Harwood of Jasper; great grandson, Joseph Dillon Shubert of Blairsville; great granddaughter, Sadie Anderson of Mississippi; great grandson, Mitchell Anderson of Blairsville; great granddaughter, Mariah Anderson of Seattle, Washington; brother and sister-in-law, jack and Mabel Whitmore of Murphy, N.C; sister and brother-in-law, Louise and Bobby Plott of Marietta; sisters-in-law, Mona Whitmore of Bell, Florida, Elynn Whitmore of Bakersfield, California and Randy Whitmore of Miami, Florida; brother-in-law and his wife, John and Jennifer Dean of Greensboro, N.C; sisters-in-law, Doris Alderfer and Shirley Coble, also of Greensboro; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held Sunday, November 23, 2003 at 2:00 pm from the Notla Baptist Church with Rev. Aud Brown and Rev. Jimmy Rogers officiating.  Special music was presented by Martha davenport, Julie Davenport and Rachel Barnes.  The following gentlemen served as Pallbearers: Kevin Garrett, Joe White, Donny Rogers, Alan White, Charlie Davis, Shane Harwood, Johnathan Whitmore, Jeremiah Whitmore and Jaron Whitmore.  Serving as honorary Pallbearers were Area Ministers, Terry Hatchett, Lee Roberson and Rev. Guy Bradley.  Serving as flower girls were Vicki Rogers Davis, Natasha White Harwood, McKensie Whitmore, Angie Garrett, Madison Garrett and Reagan Harwood.

Burial was in the Whitmore Family Cemetery in the Bellview Community of North Carolina.  Full military honors were presented by Murphy Burial Detail, consisting of member of DAV Chapter #73; American Legion Post #96; VFW Post #10222 and Hayesville VFW Post #6812.

The family has suggested memorials be made to The American Cancer Society, Attention Sue Upchurch, 4344 Mulkey Gap Road, Blairsville, Georgia 30512.

Cochran Funeral Home of Blairsville was entrusted by the family for the arrangements.

delphia grovie collins

 

Mrs. Delphia Grovie Collins, age 95, of Shuler Road in Blairsville, passed away on Friday, November 21, 2003, in the Union County Nursing Home, following an extended illness.  Mrs. Collins was born on September 19, 1908 in Union County, the daughter of the late Luther Souther and the late Dora Cole Souther.  Before retiring she had been employed with the Union County School System in the Lunch room for several years.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Earnest Collins in 1968 and one sister, Myrtle Allison, in 2003.

Surviving Mrs. Collins are a son and daughter-in-law, Dean and Lois Collins of Blairsville; five sisters, Devie Coker of Blairsville, Ella Dyer of Blairsville, Maebell Souther of Blairsville, and Ina Clark of Reidesville, GA; many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, November 23, 2003 at 3:00 pm from the Old Liberty Baptist Church with the Rev. Jerry Young and Rev. Harley Hunter officiating.  Special music was presented by the Old Liberty Church Choir.  The following gentlemen served as Pallbearers, Jerry Gilreath, Vernon Akins, Steven Moose, Kent Dyer, Lee King and Tony Hunter.  Interment followed in the church cemetery.

marion louise whitlatch

 

Mrs. Marion Louise Whitlatch, age 86, of Kimsey Street, Blairsville, passed away on Friday, November 21, 2003 in the Union County Nursing Home following an extended illness.  Mrs. Whitlatch was born on July 20, 1917 in Cleveland, Ohio, the daughter of the late Clare Jordan Parmalee and the late Mable Dene Caris Parmalee.  She had lived in Union County for the past nine years, after moving here from Conyers, Georgia.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Bruce C. Whitlatch in 1978.

Surviving Mrs. Whitlatch are three daughters and sons-in-law, Lynda and Forrest Bruce of Blairsville, July and Buddy Hughes of Alabama, Virginia and don Bradley of Monticello, Georgia; one son and daughter-in-law, William and Mary Whitlatch of South Carolina; ten grandchildren; several great grandchildren; many other relatives and friends also survive.

Graveside services were held on Sunday, November 23, 2003 at 2:30 pm from the East View Cemetery in Conyers with the Rev. James Hall officiating. A Eulogy was given by John Scherer, II.  The following gentlemen served as Pallbearers, Michael Bruce, Matthew Bruce, David Shaner, Richard Tumlin, David Whitlatch and Donnie Mosley.  Interment followed in the East View Cemetery.

MR. robert geye denman

 

Mr. Robert Geye Denman, age 67, of Blairsville, Georgia passed away Sunday, November 23, 2003 in Blairsville.

Mr. Denman had been a real estate broker and was a former owner and operator of Bob Denman Realty in Ocala, Florida.  He was born in Anniston, Alabama, and moved to Blairsville five years.  Mr. Denman was a member of First United Methodist Church of Ocala.  He was also a member of the Ocala Kiwanis Club.  A past officer of the Ocala Board of Realtors, he had received his Graduate Realtors Institute.  He had served in the U.S. Army and was a graduate of Auburn University.

Surviving are his wife, Sharon Lytle Denman, of Blairsville; son, Robert Lytle Denman of Ocala, Florida; daughter, Debbie Holt of Valdosta, Georgia; daughter, Nichole Johnson of Ocala, Florida; daughter, Tricia Denman of Atlanta; six grandchildren also survive.

Graveside services were held Wednesday, November 26, 2003 at 2 p.m. from Highlands Memorial Park Cemetery in Ocala, with Rev. William A. Owens with First United Methodist Church in Ocala officiating.

mildred markiewicz

 

Beloved mother Mildred Markiewicz, age 90 of Rex Payne Road, Blairsville, GA passed away peacefully in the Lord’s grace on Monday, November 24, 2003 in Union General Hospital in Blairsville, GA.

Mildred was born in Meriden, CT on May 8, 1913, the daughter of the late John Krupa and Caroline Jedynak Krupa, both formerly of Poland.  Mildred lived with her daughter and son-in-law, David and Mariann Bailey Glass for the past 7 years.  Her previous residences included Jensen Beach, FL and East Hampton, CT where she lived for over 45 years.  She was a loving mother and homemaker.  In Blairsville she was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church.  She is preceded in death by her husband Walter A. Markiewicz who passed away on July 16, 1986 and her beloved son Robert who just passed on October 20, 2003, also by 7 brothers, 2 sisters, 3 half brothers and 2 half sisters.

Surviving mother are her loving daughters, Lorraine Footit and son-in-law, Charles Footit of Middlefield, CT, Mariann Bailey Glass and son-in-law David Glass of Blairsville, daughter-in-law, Leslie Markowicz of Old Saybrook, CT, 5 grandsons, Joel Bailey of Blairsville, Scott Footit of Middletown, CT, David Footit of Middlefield, CT, Ronald Footit of Peterborough, NH and Stephen Markowicz of St. Petersburg, FL; 10 great grand children, Hannah Footit, John and Matthew Bailey of Victoria and Rachel Footit all of CT. Robin, Caitlin and Ronald Footit Jr., of NH and Cody and Tiffany Markowicz of FL.  Also loving sisters Lucy Nursick, Florence Nursick, Ceil Docar, and dear brother Henry Krupa all of CT, plus many loving relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held on December 1, 2003 with Roman Catholic Mass and Christian burial being held at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in East Hampton, CT with her loving grandsons and son-in-laws as pallbearers.

mrs. kathy rose burch wright

 

Mrs. Kathy Rose Burch Wright, age 42, of Blairsville, Georgia passed away Monday November 24, 2003 in Union general Hospital in Blairsville.

Mrs. Wright was born in Bibb County, Georgia, on Thursday, February 9, 1961, a daughter of Don Burch and the late Rose Young Burch, who passed away in 1980.  Kathy was a certified nurse’s assistant, and was employed at a nursing facility.  She had lived in this area since 1995, moving here from Macon, GA.  In Macon, Kathy was a member of Second Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Kenneth Wright of home; father, Don Burch of Macon, GA; son, Justin Loyd, and step-son, Dewayne Wright both of Blairsville; brother, Don Burch Jr., of Lawrenceville, GA; cousins, nieces, nephews, friends and other relatives also survive.

Funeral services were held Friday, November 28, 2003 at 2 p.m. from the chapel of Cochran Funeral Home with Rev. Tulley Griggs and Rev. Harold Ledford officiating.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Pete Wright, James Wright, Tim Ledford, Clyde Brown, Dale Woody, and Wade Howard.  Burial was in Moss Memorial Cemetery in North Carolina.

Cochran Funeral Home of Blairsville was entrusted by the family for the arrangements.

MR. edward c. brooksher

 

Mr. Edward C. Brooksher, age 92, of 10836 Johnny Gap Road, Suches, GA, died Wednesday, November 26, 2003 at the Blue Ridge Health Care Center in Blue Ridge, GA following an extended illness.

Mr. Brooksher was a native and lifelong resident of Union County, was retired from the Ford Motor Company, and was a member of the Pleasant Valley Baptist Church in Union County.  Mr. Brooksher served in the U.S. Army during WWII.

He was the son of the late Wiley and Maude Grizzle Brooksher and was also preceded in death by sister and brother-in-law: Blanche and William Hershel Gilreath, brother and sister-in-law: Bruce and Forrestine Brooksher.

He is survived by niece, Geraldine Carder of Dahlonega, GA; nephew, Benny Brookshire of Suches, GA and Bobby Brookshire of Hoschton, GA.  Special friends: Donald and Shirley Smith of Suches, GA.  Several cousins and other relatives also survive.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Saturday, November 29, 2003 at the Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church #2 in Union County with Rev. William Phillips, Rev. Doug Collins, Rev. Donald Tritt, and Rev. Barry Payne officiating.  Interment followed in the church cemetery with full military honors provided by the Veterans Alliance Honor Guard.

Kathy Garrett, 56, of Union County, Georgia, died Thursday, November 27, 2003 in Fannin Regional Hospital.  A native of Union County, Georgia, she was a daughter of the late J. and Blanche Padgett Henderson.  She was a homemaker and a member of the Hiawassee Church of God.

Surviving are her husband of 25 years, Walter B. Garrett; five stepdaughters, Mary Mortimer and her husband Everett of Morehead City, N.C., Jenny Stanley and her husband, Larry of Blue Ridge, Georgia, Gladys White and her husband, Doyle, of Andrews, N.C., Helen Boyett and her husband, Alton, of Panama City, Florida and Cassie Hewett of Belleville, Arizona; a stepson, James Garrett and his wife, Marjorie, of Griffin, Georgia two sisters, Ruth Henderson of Murphy and Judy Garrett and her husband, Joel of Hiawassee, Georgia; and several step grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, November 30, 2003 at the Ivie Funeral Home, Hayesville, N.C. with the Rev. Leon Henderson officiating.  Burial was in the Ebenezer Baptist Church Cemetery in Warne, N.C.

Pallbearers were Burke Fergeson, Wayne and Larry Henderson, J.L. Davenport, Waymon Morgan and David Moore.

MRs. june gaynelle prince

 

Mrs. June Gaynelle Prince, age 56 of Hapeville, GA formerly of Blairsville passed away on Monday, November 24, 2003 at her home following a brief illness.

Mrs. Prince was born on September 13, 1948 in Fulton County, GA, the daughter of the late Homer Anderson Price and the late Arizona Thomas Prince.  Mrs. Prince was a member of the Moores Temple Baptist Church in Lovejoy.

Surviving Mrs. Prince are one sister, Shirley Gorman; nieces, Amanda Kimbrell of Carrolton, and Elizabeth Falberg of Locust Grove; uncle, Carmel Thomas of Morganton; aunts, Myrtle Arnold of Blairsville, Dorine Drummond of Morganton; many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Friday, November 28, 2003 at 2 p.m. from the Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Luther Thomas officiating.  Special music was presented by Rev. Luther Thomas and Sally Roberson.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Gary Drummond, Randy Thomas, Mike Thomas, Haskell Thomas, Junior Thomas, Loren Beaver, Earl Arnold and Terry Ledford.  Interment followed in the Zion Hill Baptist Church Cemetery.
