hoyt jessie alexander

 

Mr. Hoyt Jessie Alexander, age 84, of Town Creek Rd, Blairsville, passed away on Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2002 in the Union General Hospital following a sudden illness.  Mr. Alexander was born on Aug. 14, 1918 in Union County, the son of the late Ed Alexander and the late Hattie Hunter Alexander.  He was a native and lifelong resident of Union County and was a veteran of the US Airforce in WWII.  He had owned and operated Alexanders Store since the early 1950’s.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruby Laura Dyer Alexander in 1995, by a brother, Jimmy Alexander and a brother in law, Ralph Gibson.  Mr. Alexander was a member and deacon of Old Liberty Baptist Church.

Surviving Mr. Alexander are one daughter and son in law, Bonnie and Gary York of Cleveland, GA; two sons and daughter in laws, Eddy and Sandy Alexander of Blairsville, Jim and Helen Alexander of Germany; one brother and sister in law, Tommy and Martha Alexander of Blairsville; one sister, Bernice Gibson of Blairsville; six grandchildren; eight great grandchildren, many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, Dec. 1, 2002 at 2:00 pm from the Old Liberty Baptist Church with the Rev. Harley Hunter and Rev. Jerry Young officiating.  Special music was presented by the Old Liberty Baptist Church Choir.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers, Frank Alexander, Calvin Collins, Troy Dyer, Ricky Evans, Jerry Dyer and Tommy Jordan.  Interment followed in the church cemetery.

mrs. catherine rowe bear

 

Mrs. Catherine Rowe Bear, age 84, of Blairsville, GA passed away Thursday, November 28, 2002 in the Murphy Medical Center Nursing Home in Murphy, NC.

Mrs. Bear was born, July 7, 1918 in Savannah, GA a daughter of the late Alvin B. and Catherine (Lemon) Rowe.  She moved to Blairsville 3 years ago from Bradenton, FL.  Mrs. Bear was a member of UDC, DAR, Eastern Star, League of Women Voters, National Secretaries Assoc. Guardian ad Litem, and received many service awards for her dedicated service and commitment to her community.

Survivors include: daughters, Suzanne Fitzpatrick of Sarasota, Fl, and Rita Andrews of Bradenton, Fl; son, Douglas Bear of Blairsville, GA; sisters, Ann Hawkins and Bonne Bryan both of Venice, FL and Glenn Moore of Carlsbad, NM; brother, William Rowe of Venice, FL; thirteen grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren.  

Funeral services were held Monday, December 2, 2002 at 1:00 p.m. from Griffin-Cline Funeral Home Manesota Chapel.  Interment was in the Manesota Memorial Park in Bradenton. 

The family request that in lieu of flowers contributions be made to Georgia Mountain Hospice, P.O. Box 580, Jasper, GA 30143 in Mrs. Bear’s memory.

wilma roselle shope pickelsimer

 

Mrs. Wilma Roselle Shope Pickelsimer, age 90, of Mulkey Gap Rd, Blairsville, passed away on Monday, November 25, 2002 in the Union General Hospital following an extended illness.  Mrs. Pickelsimer was born on June 4, 1912 in Union County, the daughter of the late Chumley Shope and the late Maggie Everett.  She was a native and lifelong resident of Union County.  She was preceded in death by two brothers, Ishmael Shope and Vance Shope, by a brother in law, George Bowers, and by her husband, Howard Wilburn Pickelsimer.  Mrs. Pickelsimer was a charter member of Faith Baptist Church.

Surviving Mrs. Pickelsimer are one daughter and son in law, Linda and Lloyd Allen of Blairsville; three sisters, Edna Colwell of Blairsville, Inabelle Voyles of Carnesville, Eva Bowers of Blairsville; sister in law, Betty Shope of Blairsville; brother in law, Horace Colwell of Blairsville, numerous nieces, nephews and many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2002 at 2:00 pm from the Faith Baptist Church with the Rev. Ric Hurd, Rev. Richard Helms and Rev. George Cline officiating.  Special music was presented by Beth Hurd, Mishele Miller and Becky Eernisse.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers, Haskin Colwell, Lloyd Voyles, Randy Shope, Randy Grizzle, Shannon Bearden and Scott corn.  Serving as honorary pallbearers were Reid Colwell, Wayne Smith, Tranis Colwell and Wayne Thomas.  Interment followed in the Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mrs. Murna England Kelley, age 86, of Blairsville, GA passed away Wednesday evening, November 27, 2002 in Union General Hospital.

Mrs. Kelley was born, December 28, 1915 in Towns County, a daughter of the late Jim and Hassie (Kelley) England.  She attended the House of Prayer Church.  Mrs. Kelley was preceded in death by her husband, Mack Kelley in 2000 and a son, Jim Kelley in 1998.

Wofford Kelley officiating.  Music was provided by Rick Milner and the House of Prayer Church Choir. Pallbearers were John Kelley, Mark Kelley, Jeff Kelley, Chris Kelley, Shannon Kelley, Lon Dillard, Mitch Patton, Mike Patton, Kedrick Scott, Kelley Scott, Van Foster, Travis Foster and Jason Kelley.  Interment was in the Kelley Family Cemetery.

kenneth patterson

 

Kenneth Patterson, 75, died November 29, 2002 at his residence.  Funeral service will be 2 pm Sunday, December 1, at Bible Baptist Tabernacle in Monroe.  Interment will be in Fairfax Memorial Park, Fairfax, VA.  The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 pm at Morgan and Son Funeral Home.

Mr. Patterson was born in Blairsville, GA, and was a retired radio technician from United Airlines.  He was a veteran of WWII and Korea.

Mr. Patterson is survived by his sons, Robert James Patterson of Franconia, VA, Jerry T. Patterson of Manassas, VA and David D. Patterson of Noodbridge, VA; daughters, Carolyn Mills of Vienna, VA, Derral Patterson of Lawrenceville, GA and Francis Patterson of Lexington, NC; sister, Jean P. Killstrom of Marshville; and four grandchildren.  Memorials may be made to the Bible Baptist Tabernacle.

Morgan and Son Funeral Home is serving the Patterson family.

sandra “pearl” brown cross

 

Mrs. Sandra (better known as Pearl) Brown Cross, age 91, of Wesley Mt. Drive, Blairsville, passed away on Sunday, Nov. 24, 2002 in the Union County Nursing Home following a brief illness.  Mrs. Cross was born on July 11, 1911 in Okarche, OK, the daughter of the late Jay Oliver Brown and the late Cora Maude King Brown.  She spent most of her life living the Western United States and moved to Georgia about twenty years ago.  She spent many happy days outdoors hunting, fishing and camping with her husband and family.  She was an avid knitter and loved to read and to work crossword puzzles.  She volunteered at Brannan Lodge in the library and gift shop and remained active until her recent illness.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Hobart Cross in 1988 and also by her five brothers and sisters, Mrs. Cross attended the First United Methodist Church of Union County.

Surviving Mrs. Cross are two sons and daughters in law, Hobert Wayne and Gloria Cross of Florence, AL, Wendall Hugh and Floy Cross of Blairsville; five grandchildren, Cathy Tanner, Rae Lynn Dodd, Cheryl Soderberg, Terri Lynn Drabek and Kenneth Cross; eight great grandchildren, many other relatives and friends also survive.

Memorial services will be held on Saturday, Nov. 30, 2002 at 11:00 am from the Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Eddie Herring officiating.  In lieu of flowers if you wish, the family requests that memorials may be made to Branan Lodge in Mrs. Cross’s memory.
