virginia bevis felker

Virginia Bevis Felker, age 80, passed away Sunday, November 26, 2006.  having only recently become a member of the Highland Farms Retirement Community, she and her husband, Stephen, were originally from Atlanta, and had spent the last twenty years in Blairsville, GA and were looking forward to spending their last years together at this very well known facility in Black Mountain.

Mrs. Felker was born in Alexandria, VA, where she still had several siblings.  She lied in Plant City, FL where her only son, Tommy was born, who unfortunately died at twenty-seven.  She then moved to Atlanta and worked as a legal secretary and then on the staff at Atlanta’s Grady Hospital.  She met Stephen at this point, they were married, and lived happily in the Stone Mountain area of Atlanta for twenty years.  They had been married thirty-six years at the time of her death.  Always a creative person, Virginia took advantage of one of her many skills and opened a retail shop called Felker Art Needlework, which was very successful and a well known center for various types of needle art, picture framing, etc.  When Stephen reached retirement time, Virginia sold her business and they moved to Blairsville, GA, so they could be close to The Appalachian Trail and the mountain area they both loved, both being avid hikers and outdoor people.

A memorial service was held at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Assembly Room at Highland Farms Retirement Center with Rev. Mark Howe officiating.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her name to the American Cancer Society.

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Brigman’s Funeral Service in Black Mountain.  For those who wish, words of comfort may be extended to the family online under Obituaries at   www.brigmans.com.
