Mrs.
Laura Pickelsimer Parker, age 93, of Blairsville passed away Monday,
November
23, 1998, at Union General Hospital.
Mrs. Parker was born in Fannin County, the daughter of the late
Elijah
and Mary Emma Cook Pickelsimer. She was
preceded in death by her husband, Newman J.
Parker,
son Earl Parker, grandson Joe Parker, and granddaughter Tonia Parker
Tanner. Mrs. Parker was a homemaker, and
a member of pleasant Grove Baptist Church.
Survivors
include sons and daughters-in-law Jack and Peggy Parker of Blairsville;
Zane
and Charlotte Parker of Greensboro, NC; Bill and Pat parker of
Blairsville; son
Ray Parker of Blairsville; daughters and sons-in-law Barbara and Wayne
Colwell
of Blairsville; Jean and Bill Kendall of Hiawassee; Jane and Jim
Collins of
Blairsville; daughter-in-law Betty Spiva Parker of Athens; brother and
sister-in-law Roy and Grace Pickelsimer of Akron, Ohio; 15
grandchildren and 11
great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral
services were held Wednesday, November 25, 1998 at 2
p.m. in the Chapel of Cochran Funeral Home of Blairsville, with the
Rev. Emon
Jones officiating. Interment followed in
Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.
Pallbearers were: Mike Parker, Gary Kendall, Jason Brown, Greg
Parker,
Justin Collins and Mickey King, Jr.

Mrs.
Peggy O’Brien Cleaves, age 72, of Blairsville, Georgia, formerly of
Jacksonville, FL, lost her battle with cancer Saturday, December 5,
1998.
She was
born in Miami, FL the daughter of Eugene and Bessie Tinnons O’Brien,
but had
lived in the Georgia mountains for the past
20 years.
In the last
few years, she worked as a volunteer for the local American Cancer
Society as a
support group coordinator.
Surviving are
her husband of 49 years, Charles A. Cleaves of Blairsville, GA;
daughter and
son-in-law Charlene and Doug Stewart of Pembroke Pines, FL; sons,
Michael
Cleaves, Charles S. Cleaves and wife Romona Cleaves all of
Jacksonville, FL;
six grandchildren: Steven O’Brien Stewart, Mary Kathleen Stewart, Heidi
Cleaves, Joshua O’Brien Cleaves, Wesley Partington all of Jacksonville,
Fl and
Wesley Cleaves of Gurley, AL. many other relatives and friends also
survive.
No
services were held.
In lieu of flowers the family request donations be
made to the union County Unit of the American Cancer Society,
Blairsville, GA.

Mrs.
Anna Lou Gray Nichols, age 81, of Blairsville, GA, passed away Sunday,
Nov. 29,
1998 at her home.
Mrs.
Nichols was born in Union County, on Saturday, Nov. 24, 1917, a
daughter of the
late James Lafayette Gray and Lula Laura Patterson Gray.
She was a
homemaker and had lived most of her life in this area.
Mrs. Nichols was a member of faith Baptist
Church, and in fact, was a Charter Member.
She had
been preceded in death by a son, Edward Nichols; son-in-law, Cline
Davenport,
grandson, Benny Joe Jones, and great-granddaughter, Brandie Ann Nichols.
Surviving are
her husband, Rev. Ellard Nichols, of Blairsville; daughter, Linda
Davenport, of
Morganton; son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Leigh Ann Nichols, of
Statesville,
NC; son and daughter-in-law, Theresia Nichols, of Morrow, GA;
sisters-in-law,
Etta Lee Rich and Anna Mae Nichols, both of Blairsville, and Edna Gray,
of Blue
Ridge, 14 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, 9
great-great-grandchildren
also survive, along with a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral
services were held Tuesday, Dec. 1, 1998 at 12 noon
from faith Baptist Church with Bro. James Brock and Bro. Homer Wilson
officiating.
The
following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Terry Jones,
Billy Nichols, Victor Nichols, Alex Davenport, Tony Davenport, Mike
Davenport,
Keith Jones, Jimmy Nichols, Josh and John Nichols.
Interment
was in Pleasant Hill Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mrs.
Virginia Stanley Messer, age 74, of Blairsville, GA, passed away
Friday, Dec.
4, 198 in Union General Hospital in Blairsville following an extended
illness.
Mrs. Messer
was born in Fannin County, GA, on Sunday, Aug. 3, 1924, a daughter of
the late
Walter Stanley and Mary Belle Stanley.
Mrs. Messer
lived in Decatur, GA, for 33 years, the moved to Blairsville in 1983. She was a member of the First Baptist Church
of Blairsville.
Surving are
son and daughter-in-law, Jimmy and Mary Messer of Buford; brothers,
hall and
Curtis Stanley, of Blur Ridge; sisters, Lois Nell Long, Eugene
Davenport, and
Helen Tipton, all of Blue Ridge; Winnie Dillingham, and Flora Belle
Mashburn,
both of Morganton; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and many
nieces,
nephew and other relatives also survive.
Funeral
services were held Sunday, Dec. 5, 1998 at 2 p.m.
from First Baptist Church of Blairsville, with Rev. Danny Parris
officiating.
Specially
selected music was presented by R. Terry Hooper;
the following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Rick Stanley, Curtis
Dillingham,
Gerald Long, Jeff Tipton, Chris Mashburn, Ronald Green, Billy Messer,
and Gary
Stanley.
Interment
was in Big Creek Baptist Church Cemetery. Cochran

Mr.
Neal W. Collins, age 83, of Blairsville, GA. Passed away Monday, Nov.
30, 1998
in Erlanger Medical Center in Chattanooga, TN/ from injuries he
sustained in an
automobile accident.
Mr. Collins
was born in Union County, on Saturday, June 26, 1915, a son of the late
John
Collins and Lena Lance Collins. He was a
lifelong resident of Union County and a member of the First Baptist
Church of
Blairsville, where he was a trustee.
Mr. Collins
was a member of Allegheny Masonic Lodge, #114, F&AM, for over 50
years; he
was a local businessman and a former County Ordinary.
Surviving
are his wife, Elena Collins, of Blairsville; daughters: Jo Neal Ward of
Lake
City, FL; and Kay Beaver of Blairsville; sisters: Doris Colwell and
Ruth Hood,
both of Blairsville; and Docia Loh, of Orlando, FL; grandchildren:
Cassie
Giebeig, of lake City, FL; Daryl Sargent, of Quincy, FL; Dana Beaver,
of
Blairsville; and Henry Neal beaver, of Dawsonville; four
great-grandchildren
also survive.
Funeral
services were held Wednesday, Dec. 2, 1998 at 2 p.m.
from First Baptist Church of Blairsville, with Rev. Danny Parris and
Rev. B.A.
Buchanan officiating.
The Eulogy
was presented by Mrs. Robie Colwell Weaver.
Special music was presented by Terry Hooper and the First
Baptist Church
Choir.
Members
of the Allegheny Masonic Lodge served as pallbearers,
and Honorary Escort to the family, and also
presented Masonic Graveside Services.
Interment
was in Union Memory Gardens Cemetery.
