howard woodrow bryant

 

Mr. Howard Woodrow Bryant, age 86, of Blairsville, GA, passed away Tuesday, December 4, 2007 at Union County Nursing Home in Blairsville.  Mr. Bryant was born Tuesday, August 16, 1921 in Union County, GA to the late Ed Grady and Beulah Queen Bryant.  He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Union County.  As a United States marine he helped fight many battles in the South pacific during World War II, including Iwo Jima, Bougainville, Saipan, Guam and Guadal Canal.  He received several medals for bravery, including two Purple Hearts and the Bronze Star.  He was owner and operator of Bryantís Garage for many years.  He was a loving husband to his late wife Dorothy Sullivan Bryant for 57 years.  He was also preceded in death by his sister, Lorene Mason and his two brothers, A.J. and Ford Bryant.

His survivors include: daughter and son-in-law, Phyllis and ken McClure of Sparta, GA; son, Michael Bryant of Blairsville, GA; daughter & son-in-law, Pam and Tommy Jordan of Blairsville, GA; son & daughter-in-law, Keith and Becky Bryant of Blairsville, GA; sister & brother-in-law, Pauline & Ron Taylor of Blairsville, GA; sister, Lucille Warren of Atlanta, GA; sister, Bonnie Thomas of Blairsville, GA; granddaughter, Lynn & Tony Heard of Loganville, GA; granddaughter, Kay & Jeff Coots of Commerce, GA; grandson, Joe & Brittany Jordan of Blairsville, GA; grandson Jordan Bryant of Blairsville, GA; great-grandchildren, Blake & Kennedy heard of Loganville, GA and Brandon, Ashley & Paytton  Coots of Commerce, GA.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m., Friday, December 7, 2007 from the First United Methodist Church of Union County with Rev. Ben Lewis officiating.  Music was provided by Martha Cone, Jeff Bauman & Keith DeFoor.  Serving as pallbearers were:  Michael Bryant, Keith Bryant, Jordan Bryant, Joe Jordan, Brandon Coots, Tommy Jordan, Ken McClure and Tony Heard.  Mr. Bryant was laid to rest in the Confidence United Methodist Church Cemetery next to his sweetheart Dorothy with Military Honors provided by the U.S. Marine Corps Honor Guard.

madeline stinson windham

 

Mrs. Madeline Stinson Windham, age 88, of Blairsville, GA, formerly of Dublin, GA passed away Monday, December 3, 207 at Union County Nursing Home in Blairsville.  Mrs. Windham was born Wednesday, September 17, 1919 in Laurens County, GA to the late William Ezel Stinson and the late Willie Day Stinson.  She attended Coosa United Methodist Church and was preceded in death by her husband, Gene Nelson Windham and a son, Stokes Windham.

Survivors include: son & daughter-in-law, Gene and Denise Windham of Blairsville; son & daughter-in-law, Millard and Patsy Windham of Fernandina Beach, FL; daughter & son-in-law, Sheryl and Bob Kocsis of Columbus, NC; daughter & son-in-law, Brenda and Bill Goodwin of Jackson, MS; brother, Emory Stinson of Dublin, GA, seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.  Many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held Thursday, December 6, 2007 at 2 p.m. from the Townsend Brothers Funeral Home in Dublin with Rev. Katie Strals officiating.  Interment followed in Bracewells Cemetery in Dublin.

jackie grady abercrombie

 

Mr.  Jackie Grady Abercrombie, age 67, of Bonnie Lane, Blairsville passed away on Monday, December 3, 2007 in Kindred Hospital in Atlanta following an extended illness.  Mr. Abercrombie was born on May 10, 1940 in Fannin County, the son of the late Henry Grady Abercrombie and the late Minnie Iowa Chambers Abercrombie.  Jackie was a lifelong resident of Union County.  He loved life, his family and being around people.  Jackie loved fox hunting, which he did since childhood and also enjoyed fishing, camping and just being outdoors.  Most of all, he loved his church and loved hi Lord.  Jackie was a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church.

Surviving Mr. Abercrombie are his loving wife of twelve years, Helen Sego Abercrombie of Blairsville; one son and daughter-in-law, Robbie and Tina Abercrombie of Acworth, GA; one daughter and son-in-law, Natha and Lee Rivers of Bailey, MS; one brother, Jimmy Abercrombie of Blairsville; seven grandchildren, Chris and Tyler Abercrombie, Robby and Caleb Rivers, Lindsey McNeel, Robbin Abercrombie and Britney Newsome; three great-grandchildren, Ethan and Erin Rivers and Holden McNeel; several nieces, nephews, cousins and many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, December 6, 2007 at 11 a.m. from the Bethlehem Baptist Church with the Rev. Cotton Harris and Rev. Vernon Davenport officiating.  Special music was presented by the Bethlehem Church Choir.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers, Kevin Newsome, Robby Rivers, Lee Rivers, Richard Tanner, Stevie Abercrombie and Jim Abercrombie.  Interment followed in the Bethlehem Church Cemetery.  The family met with friends at the funeral home on Wednesday evening after 6 p.m.

walter bruner garrett

 

Mr. Walter Bruner Garrett, age 85, of Sawmill Rd., Blairsville passed away on Wednesday, December 5, 2007 in Life care Center of Copper Basin following an extended illness.  Mr. Garrett was born on November 2, 1922 in Unaka, NC, the son of the late Hobart R. Garrett and late Florence Ledford Garrett.  Mr. Garrett enjoyed gardening flowers and anything with being outdoors, but most of all he loved vanilla ice cream.  Besides his family, he loved logging and operating a bulldozer.  He was preceded in death by a daughter, Hazel Aline Garrett; a sister, Margaret Garrett; three brothers, Edgar, Clyde and David Garrett and a son-in-law, Larry Stanley.  Mr. Garrett was a member of the Church of God.

Surviving Mr. Garrett are one son and daughter-in-law, James W. and Marjorie Garrett of Griffin, GA; five daughters and four sons-in-law, Mary and Everett Mortimer of Blue Ridge, Virginia Stanley of Blue Ridge, Gladys and Doyle White of Andrews, NC, Helen and Alton Boyett of Panama City, FL, Cassie and Marshall Hewitt of Bellville, AR; three brothers, Hoby Garrett of Gray Ct., SC, Oscar Garrett of Ducktown, TN, Harold Garrett of Young Harris; one sister, Maxine Moore of Hemptown, GA, thirteen grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, December 8, 2007 at 11 a.m. from the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Jimmy Rogers officiating.  Special music was presented by the Gospel Echos.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers, James Garrett, Joel Garrett, Robert White, Matthew White, Dave Moore and Justin Davenport.  Interment followed in the Ebenezer Baptist Church Cemetery.  The family met with friends at the funeral home on Friday evening from 6-9 p.m.

shirley louise steinc

 

Mrs. Shirley Louise Steinc, age 63, of Floyd Lane, Blairsville formerly of LAKE Wales, FL, passed away on Tuesday, December 4, 2007 at her home following an extended illness.  Mrs. Steinc was born on May 28, 1944 in Detroit, MI, the daughter of the late Ray Hicks and the late Ola Orr Hicks.  Mrs. Steinc was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving Mrs. Steinc are her loving husband of thirty-seven years, Frank Steinc of Blairsville; one daughter and son-in-law, Kellie and Ken Wood of Blairsville; one son and daughter-in-law, Brian and Nicole Steinc of lake Wales, FL; one brother, Carl Hicks of Roechester, MI; two sisters, Joyce Alongie of Shelby, MI, Faye Holts of Attica, MI; two grandchildren, Ashley and Katie Wood of Blairsville; many other relatives and friends also survive.

A memorial service will be held at a later date and will be announced.  In lieu of flowers, if you wish, the family requests that memorials may be made to the Union County Humane Society Mountain Shelter in Mrs. Steincís memory.

Mrs. Jessie H. Jackson, age 100 of Blairsville, GA, passed away Thursday, December 6, 2007 at Union General Hospital.  Mrs. Jackson was born Sunday, December 16, 1906 in Union County, GA to the late Manley Paxton Hamby and the late Nora Allison Hamby.  She was a member of Shady Grove Methodist Church for 88 years.

Survivors include: husband, Rouss Jackson of Blairsville, GA; son & daughter-in-law, Bill and Everee Hamby of Adairsville, GA; brothers, Hoyt Hamby and Loy Hamby of Blairsville, GA; grandson and wife, Alan and Lorie Hamby of Adairsville, GA; grandson and wife, Paxton and Debbie Hamby of Calhoun, GA; grandson and wife, Keith and Kim Hamby of Adairsville, GA; eight great-grandchildren and host of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Sunday, December 9, 2007 at 2 p.m. from the Cochran Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Bob Bone and Rev. Bill Honaker officiating.  Music was provided by Cheryl Williams.  Interment was in Shady grove Cemetery.  Serving as pallbearers were: Alan Hamby, Paxton Hamby, Keith Hamby, Buddy Rowan, Johnny Hamby, Roy Hamby and Harvey Jackson.  Honorary pallbearers included: Dale Hamby, Greg Hamby and Glenn Hamby.
