mr. sylva “sib” veston harkins

 

Mr. Sylva (better known as Sib) Veston Harkins, age 85, of Weaver Circle East, Blairsville, passed away on Wednesday, December 8, 2004 at his home following an extended illness.  Mr. Harkins was born on May 29, 1919 in Union County, the son of the late Newt Harkins and the late Maggie Rich Harkins.  He was a native and lifelong resident of Union County.  He was a mason by trade.  He was preceded in death by a son, Ralph Henry Harkins in 2000.  Mr. Harkins attended the Church of God.

Surviving Mr. Harkins are his loving wife of sixty-five years, Vesta Alwayne Nix Harkins of Blairsville; two daughters and sons-in-law, Rachel and Ronald Dyer of Blairsville, Grace and Joseph Whalen of Nashville, TN; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Dewey Russell Harkins of Blairsville, Billy and Debbie Harkins of Blairsville; three sisters, Maydelle Weaver, Donnie Burnette and Ada Johnson all of Blairsville; twenty-eight grandchildren, forty-seven great grandchildren, four great great grandchildren, many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, December 11, 2004 at 1 p.m. from the funeral home chapel with Chaplain Jerry Johnson officiating.  Special music was provided by John Nix, Edward Mashburn and Kenneth Young.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers, Donnie Dyer, Ronnie Dyer, Timmy Harkins, Nick Harkins, Chuck Harkins and Josh Harkins.  Interment followed in the Owltown Church of God Cemetery.

mr. glenn john mcdonald

 

Mr. Glenn John McDonald, age 86, of John Smith Road, Blairsville passed away on Wednesday, December 8, 2004 in the Union General Hospital following an extended illness.  Mr. McDonald was born on July 14, 1918 in Ailey, GA, the son of the late William McDonald and the late Vela Thompson McDonald.  His grandparents were Rev. Glenn J. Thompson and Molly McGee Thompson of Ailey.  He had also lived in Ailey, Nahunta, Homerville and Mt. Vernon, GA.  He had worked in the lumber industry as a millwright and planning mill sawmill superintendent for Thompson Lumber Company of Ailey and various other lumber companies in south Georgia.  He retired from Brunswick Pulp and Paper, Pearson, GA in 1979.  He was a veteran of the U.S. Army in WWII, serving in Europe with 3rd Army, 199th Field Artillery.  He was a member and former Chaplain of Montgomery County VFW Post #10229.  He was preceded in death by his first wife, Alice Payne McDonald, a son, Paul D. (P.D.) McDonald Sr., three half brothers, Braxton, Robert (Bobby) and James McDonald.  Mr. McDonald was a member of the Mt. Vernon Baptist church.

Surviving Mr. McDonald are his loving wife, Gladys Whitley Brown McDonald of Soperton, one daughter and son-in-law, Mary E. and Anthony Napolitano of Blairsville formerly of Foster, RI, with whom he made his home, three grandchildren, Michael Napolitano of Johnston, RI, Christy McDonald Robertson of Birmingham, AL, Paul McDonald of Vidalia, GA, five step daughters, Inez Warnock and Lottie Horne of Soperton, Ellen Coleman of Ailey, Vivian Gillis of Glenwood, GA, Debra Swicord of Gordon, GA, several step grand and great grandchildren also survive.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, December 11, 2004 at 1 p.m. from the Mt. Vernon Baptist church with the Rev. Alec Thompson officiating.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Frank Twiggs, Macky Hill, Floyd Beasley, Hershel Lee and Thomas Thompson.  Interment followed in the G.J. Thompson Cemetery.

mrs. marie rogers cornwell

 

Mrs. Marie Rogers Cornwell, age 86, of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away Sunday, December 5, 2004, in Union county Nursing Home in Blairsville.

Mrs. Cornwell was born in Union County, GA, on Wednesday, January 23, 1918, a daughter of the late William Rogers and Mary Josephine Hughes Rogers.  She was a homemaker and lived most of her life in Blairsville.  Mrs. Cornwell was a member of Bray United Methodist Church.  She had been preceded in death by her husband, P.G. Cornwell, in 1968; brothers and sisters: Edgar Lee Rogers, Lula Bell Rogers Johnson, Nellie Jane Rogers Odom, Eva Mae Rogers Emerson, Fannie Golden Rogers Akins, Thomas Frank Rogers, Grady Jeremiah Rogers and Walter Pierce Rogers.

Surviving family members are daughter and son-in-law, Paula and Chris Boland, of Blairsville; daughter and son-in-law, Martha and Mike Dillard, of Blairsville; six grandchildren: Sarah Boland and Naomi Boland, of Dahlonega, GA; Jessica and her husband Eric Lee of Cohutta, GA; Aaron and his wife Larissa Boland, of Marysville, California; Marie Legg, Carrie Dillard; three great grandchildren: Abigail Lee, Jacob Lee, and Sara Dillard.  Many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, December 7, 2004, at 2 p.m., from the Chapel of Cochran Funeral Home in Blairsville, with Rev. Charles Black, Rev. Michael Anderson, and Rev. Eric Lee officiating.  Special music was presented for the services by Ernest and Becky Rogers.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Arnold Guest, Bud Akins, Ernest Rogers, Randy Zimmerman, Jay Groves, and Joey Colwell.  Burial was in Union Memory Gardens Cemetery in Blairsville.

jonathan keith lloyd

 

Jonathan Keith Lloyd, age 20, of Blairsville, passed away Monday, December 6, 2004, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

Jonathan was born in Hall County, Georgia, on Monday, April 16, 1984, a son of Keith Edward Lloyd and Jane Elizabeth Hughes Lloyd.  He had lived in Blairsville all of his life and worked in housing construction.  Jonathan was a member of Choestoe Baptist Church, and was an avid outdoorsman and loved to hunt.

Surviving family members include his loving wife of two months, Tina Lloyd, of Blairsville; mother-inlaw, Jamie Burbage, of Blairsville; father and mother-in-law, Barry and Kathy Tabor; maternal grandparents, Worth and Mary Hughes, of Blairsville; paternal grandmother, Kathy Lloyd, of Morganton, GA; paternal grandfather, Kenneth Lloyd, of Blairsville; sister and brother-in-law, Melissa Anderson Collins and Ben Collins, of Blairsville; sister, Keisha Lloyd, of Blairsville; sister-in-law, Anna Burbage, of Blairsville; brother-in-law, Barry Tabor, Jr., of Augusta, GA; niece, Caitlyn Collins, and nephew, Vance Collins; many aunts, uncles, other relatives and many friends also survive.

Funeral services were scheduled for Saturday, December 11, 2004, at 2 p.m., in the Chapel of Cochran Funeral Home in Blairsville, with Rev. Mike Youngblood officiating.  Special music was presented by “Forgiven,” Rev. Henderson, and Tammy & Jessica Hughes.  The following gentlemen were selected to serve pallbearers: Jonathan Adams, Randy Ledford, Jr., Daniel Nelson, David Dockery, Billy Hughes, Thomas Nichols, and Dustin Gillespie.  The following gentlemen were selected to serve as honorary escort to the family: Tim Nelson, Ryan Owenby, Bo Anderson, and Michael Lingerfelt.  Burial was in Ebenezer Baptist Church Cemetery.

June 6, 1920December 7, 2004.  Claudine Reese, 84, of Blairsville, formerly of Dawsonville, died Tuesday, December 7, 2004 at her residence following an extended illness.

A native of Hall County, she lived in Dawson County for 30 years before moving to Union County a few months ago.  A homemaker at her death, she retired from Frito-Lay after 28 years of service.  She was preceded in death by her husbands, Cleve Loggins and Bob Reese, and children, Bonnie Faye Lord and Doug Loggins.

Survivors include daughters, Betty Helton, Newnan, GA, Ann Adams, Blairsville, GA; sons, Phillip Loggins, Honea Path, SC, Richard Loggins, Penscalola, FL; sisters, Grace Allison, Elizabeth, NJ, Emma Lou Shuman, Gainesville; 12 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, 5 great great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Friday, December 10, 2004 at 11 o’clock at Bearden Funeral Home Chapel.  Interment in Memorial Park Cemetery.

mrs. hazel jean doolittle

 

Mrs. Hazel Jean Doolittle, age 74, of Blairsville, GA passed away Saturday, December 11, 2004 in Union County Nursing Home.

Mrs. Doolittle was born Thursday, may 8, 1930 in Union County, GA to the late Hershel and Etta Styles Parham.  She had lived in Athens, GA for 13 years and Thomaston, GA for 22 years before moving back to Blairsville in 1984.  She was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church and was preceded in death by a son, Russell Dowdy and a brother, Harold Parham.

Survivors include: 2 sons, Norman Dowdy of Winder, GA and Randy Dowdy of Blairsville, GA; 2 brothers, George Parham of Athens, GA and Herbert Parham of Blairsville, GA; 2 sisters, Bernice Gibby of Nashville, TN and Evelyn Deyton of Blairsville, GA; grandson, Curtis Dowdy of Boone, Iowa; 3 great grandsons Nathan Dowdy, Alec Dowdy and Jonathan Dowdy and several beloved nieces and nephews.

Funeral services are scheduled for Monday, December 13, 2004 at 11 a.m. from the Cochran Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Brent Chatham officiating.  Interment followed in the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.  Serving as pallbearers were: Bill Cantrell, Brannon Passmore, Ryan Deyton, Gene Whitehead, Steve Carver and Kenny Dyer.
