Mr.
Noel Monroe Galloway, a retired businessman, passed away at his home in
Mineral
Bluff on Tuesday, December 1st, 1998, after several years of declining
health. He was born August 22, 1914 in
Union County
to E.M. “Roe” and Addie Lee Hood Galloway, but moved to Fannin County
when he
was only 4 and lived here most of his life.
At the age of 13, he began work at Sears Roebuck Co., in
Atlanta; he
acquired his high school education at night school during these years. After moving back to Fannin County when in
his early 20’s; he ran a sawmill, farmed and was employed by Hampton
Hardware
in McCaysville before starting Lakewood Hardware and Supply Co., Inc,
in the
Lakewood area. This he operated for
almost 20 years, before selling this business and opening Mineral Bluff
Cash
and Carry/Turner Bros. Wholesale in Mineral Bluff.
He also built homes and did some land
development.
He was a
member of First Baptist Church in Blue Ridge; had served on the Board
of
Deacons of New Hope (Flinthill) Baptist and of the First Baptist. He was a charter member of the now defunct
Lions Club of Blue Ridge, being elected District Director in the early
1970’s. He was a member of the Blue
Ridge Kiwanis Club and a ‘snowbird’ member of the Kiwanis Club of Punta
Gorda,
Florida. He served on the Fannin County
School board, was a candidate of Georgia State Representative, he was a
member
of Morganton Masonic Lodge and was a member of Jimmy Carter’s “Peanut
Brigade”,
traveled to New England, New Mexico as well as other states. He was very civic minded as well as being a
loving father, grandfather, and great grandfather.
Even though, Noel spent the winter months at
his home in Port Charlotte, FL; his heart stayed rooted deep in Fannin
County.
He is
survived by his widow, the former Dorothy Farmer, a daughter and son in
law,
Lynda and Milton Fitch; a son and daughter in law Randy and Lisa
Galloway of
Morganton; a stepdaughter and son in law, Connie and Danny Kirby of
Morganton
and step son and daughter in law, Richard and Margaret Folsom of
Kennesaw;
three brother’s Robert of Rome, GA; Weyland and Harold of Marietta; ten
grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
Funeral
services were held Thursday, December 3rd at the First Baptist Church
of Blue
Ridge with the Rev. Harold Willis officiating.
Music was led by Greg Norton and Sharon Folsom.
Interment was in the New Hope “Flinthill”
Baptist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers
were his nephews, Kenneth Foster, Hoyt, Russell, Raymond, Vaughn and
Darrell
Galloway. Honorary pallbearers were
members of the Blue Ridge Kiwanis Club.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer
Society
for the Alzheimers Society.

Peggy O’Brien Cleaves, age 72, of Blairsville, GA, formerly of
Jacksonville,
FL, lost her battle with cancer Saturday, December 5, 1998. She was born in Miami, FL the daughter of
Eugene and Bessie Tinnons O’Brien, but had lived in the Georgia
Mountains for
the past 20 years. In the last few
years, she worked as a volunteer for the local American Cancer Society
as a support
group coordinator. Surviving are her
husband of 49 years, Charles A. Cleaves of Blairsville, GA; daughter
and son in
law Charlene and Doug Steward of Pembroke Pines, FL; sons: Michael
Cleaves,
Charles S. Cleaves and Patrick O’Brien Cleaves and wife Romona Cleaves
all of
Jacksonville, FL; six grandchildren: Steve O’Brien Stewart, Mary
Kathleen
Stewart, Heidi Cleaves, Joshua O’Brien Cleaves, Wesley Partington all
of
Jacksonville, FL and Wesley Cleaves of Gurley, AL.

Mrs.
Anna Lou Gray Nichols, age 81, of Blairsville, GA passed away Sunday,
November
29, 1998 at her home.
Mrs.
Nichols was born in Union County on Saturday, November 24, 1917, a
daughter of
the late James Lafayette Gray and Lula Laura Patterson Gray.
She was a
homemaker and had lived most of her life in this area.
Mrs. Nichols was a member of Faith Baptist
Church, and in fact, was a Charter Member.
She had
been preceded in death by a son, Edward Nichols; son in law, Cline
Davenport,
grandson, Benny Joe Jones and great granddaughter, Brandie Ann Nichols.
Surviving are
her husband, Bro. Ellard Nichols, of Blairsville; daughter and son in
law,
Joyce and Ervin Jones of Blairsville; daughter, Linda Davenport of
Morganton;
son and daughter in law Sam and Barbara Nichols of Blairsville; and
daughter in
law Theresia Nichols of Morrow, GA; sisters in law, Etta Lee Rich and
Anna Mae
Nichols, both of Blairsville, and Edna Gray of Blue Ridge; 14
grandchildren and
19 great grandchildren and 9 great great grandchildren also survive,
along with
a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral
services were held Tuesday, Dec. 1, 1998 at 12 noon
from Faith Baptist Church with Bro. James Brock and Bro. Homer Wilson
officiating.
The

Henry Lee Thompson, age 83, of Blairsville, GA, passed away Saturday,

12, 1998 in Union County Nursing Home in Blairsville.
Mr. Thompson was born in Blackmon, FL, on
Saturday, June 26, 1915, a son of the late Allen and Dee Thompson. He was a US Army Veteran of World War
II. Mr. Thompson had been living in this
area since 1997, coming here from Lakeland, FL.

Pete Kirksey, age 50, of Blairsville passed away Monday, December 7,
1998 at
his home, following an extended illness.
Mr. Kirksey
was born in Duval County, Florida, on Sunday, June 20, 1948, a son of
the late
Robert Kirksey and Pearcie Weaver Kirksey.
He was a retired Fireman/Paramedic, and has been living in Union
County
since 1988, coming here from Jacksonville, Florida.
Mr. Kirksey was a member of First Baptist
Church of Blairsville, the Kiwanis Club, and the Fraternal Order of
Firefighters. Mr. Kirksey was currently
employed with Union County Board of Education as a school bus driver
and
parapro. He coached Youth Football and
baseball in Blairsville and while living in Jacksonville.

his wife, Diane, of Blairsville, son and daughter in law, Dane and
Angie
Kirksey, of Jacksonville, son, Robert Grady Kirksey of Blairsville,
daughter
and son in law, Karen and Steve, bother and sister in law, Charlie

Mr.
Kent Wilson Honeycutt, age 59, of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away
Monday,
December 7 1998 in DeKalb Medical center in Decatur, Georgia, following
an
extended illness.
Mr.
Honeycutt was born in Iredell County, North Carolina, on Tuesday,
December 13,
1939, a son of Edith Poston Honeycutt and the late Charlie Wilson
Honeycutt. He was a veteran of the US
Navy and the US Marines. Mr. Honeycutt
had lived in this area for the past two years, coming here from
Conyers,
GA. He was retired from AT&T, as
engineering department manager, and also had worked six years with
Sprint. Mr. Honeycutt ran in the 1984
Olympics
carrying the torch through Blairsville.
He ran in a total of 10 marathons, including the Boston Marathon. Mr. Honeycutt owned and operated Bucky Beaver
Tree service.
Survivors
include his wife,, Sally Honeycutt, of Blairsville; his mother Edith
Poston
Honeycutt, of Blairsville; son, Mark Wilson Honeycutt, of Conyers, GA;
four
sisters: Joan Hatcher and Barbara Ross, both of Charlotte, NC; Donnie
Tressler
of PA, and Nancy McCall of NC; a brother, Dr. Charles Allen Honeycutt,
of
Charlotte, NC, two grandchildren, Holly Ann Honeycutt and Samantha
Grace

Ray Lewis, age 81, of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away Saturday,
December 12,
198 at his home following an extended illness.
Mr. Lewis
was born in Union County, Georgia, on Saturday, April 28, 1917, a son
of the
late Jewell Lewis and Nettie Swanson Lewis.
He was a retired cattle farmer and was a lifelong resident of
this
area. Mr. Lewis was a member and deacon
of Ebenezer Baptist Church. He served as
a deacon for 50 years. Mr. Lewis was a
former board member of Union General Hospital and a member of FHA
board; he had
also served as chairman of deacons at Ebenezer Baptist Church.
Survivors
include his wife, Dorothy martin Lewis, of Blairsville, a loving niece,
Winona
Tritt of Blairsville, brother, Wead Lewis, of Blairsville, brother,
June E.
Lewis, of North Charleston, SC, other nieces and nephews and many other
relatives and friends also survive.

Church of Blairsville. She had been

Mrs. Wimpey
was born in union County, on Sunday, march
25, 1917, a
daughter of the late Marion Jackson and Emma Davis Jackson. She was a teacher and principal in Union
County schools. Mrs. Wimpey was a
lifelong resident of this area and was a member of First Baptist Church

Blairsville.

Mrs.
McNabb was born on Tuesday, December 8, 1925, in Towns
County, Georgia, a daughter of the late Luther McGaha and Betty Nichols
McGaha. She was a homemaker and was of
the Baptist Faith. Mrs. McNabb was
preceded in death by her husband, Grady McNabb in 1949.

Foster. He was a veteran of the US Navy,
and served during the Korean Conflict.

Masonic Lodge,
F & AM; a former member of the Elks Club; a member of Union County

Wade Nando Stroud, Jr., age 72, of Blairsville, GA, passed away
Thursday,

Owenbey Stroud. He was a veteran of the
US navy, and served during WWII. Mr.
