marie thomas gunnell

 

Mrs. Marie Thomas Gunnell, age 82, of River Road in Blairsville, passed away on Monday, December 8, 2003 in Union General Hospital following an extended illness.  Mrs. Gunnell was born on July 22, 1921 in Towns County, the daughter of the late Dock Thomas and the late Sara Keys Thomas.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Woodrow Gunnell in 1993.  She was a member of New Harmony Baptist Church.

Surviving Mrs. Gunnell are one son and daughter-in-law, Freddie and Margaret Dyer of Indianapolis, Ind.; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Rev. Claude and Bennalee Thomas of Blairsville, Willis and Ruth Thomas of Cornelia; three sisters, Annie Maude Underwood of Blairsville, Dorthy Hughes of Blairsville, Geneva Lovell of Gainesville; two grandchildren, Avery and Keith Dyer; five great grandchildren, Jordon, Chandler, Madison, Anna Kristina and Christopher Dyer; many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, December 11, 2003 at 2:00 pm from the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Waymon Lovell officiating.  Special music was presented by Hubert and Betty Legg.  The following gentlemen served as Pallbearers, Michael Thomas, Curtis Underwood, Larry Thomas, Avery Hughes, Cody Hughes and J.D. Thomas.  Interment followed in the Old Union Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mountain View Funeral Home of Blairsville was in charge of arrangements.

rick alan kates

 

            Mr. Rick Alan Kates, age 54, of Posey Road, Blairsville, passed away on Wednesday, December 10, 2003 in St. Joseph’s Hospital in Atlanta, following an extended illness.  Mr. Kates was born on December 19, 1948 in Rochester, NY., the son of the late Ray Walker and Joy Rhines.  He was a member of the Spencer Port Volunteer Fire Department.  Mr. Kates was of the Lutheran faith.

            Surviving Mr. Kates are his loving wife of thirty five years, Ruth Geil Kates of Blairsville; mother and step father, Joy and Walt Kissel of Blairsville; one daughter and son-in-law, Raquel and Christopher Gendron of Naples, Florida; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Rick Alan Kates, Jr., of Rochester, NY., Ron and Marcy Kates of Rochester., Roger and Belinda Kates of Blairsville; two sisters, Valarie Nowak or Rochester, Shelly Kates of Naples; six grandchildren, Katie, Shawna, Zachery and Maranda Kates, Brandon and Ashley Gendron; many other relatives and friends also survive.

            Funeral services were held on Friday, December 12, 2003 from Mountain View Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Charles Houska officiating.  If you wish, memorials may be made to the Spencer Port Volunteer Fire Department or to the American Heart Association in Mr. Kates memory.

            Mountain View Funeral Homes in Blairsville was in charge of arrangements.

mr. bennie roger rich

 

            Mr. Bennie Roger Rich, age 65 of Towns Creek School Road, Blairsville passed away on Saturday, November 29, 2003 in the Union General Hospital following an extended illness.

            Mr. Rich was born on February 15, 1938 in Union county, the son of the late Cecil E. Rich and the late Willine Jackson Rich.  He was a native and lifelong resident of Union County.  He was a veteran of the U.S. Coast Guard.  Mr. Rich was a member of the Harmony Grove Baptist Church.

            Surviving Mr. Rich are his loving companion, Tanya Chastain; one daughter and son-in-law, Lisa and Greg Fortenberry of Blairsville; two sons, Eric Rich of Marietta, Craig Rich of St. Charles, MO; three sisters, Eudoria Brackett of Blairsville, Jackie Sue Colwell of Blairsville, Claudine Thomas of Blairsville; one brother, Sidney Rich of Flowery Branch, GA; many other relatives and friends also survive.

            Graveside services were held on Monday, December 1, 2003 from the Harmony Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Stacy Dyer officiating.  Military honors were conducted by the North Georgia Honor Guard.  In lieu of flowers if you wish, the family requests that memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society in Mr. Rich’s memory.

maisie hazel teague mcclure

 

            Mrs. Maisie Hazel Teague McClure, age 81, of Murphy Highway, Blairsville, passed away on Saturday, December 13, 2003 in the Union County Hospital following an extended illness.  Mrs. McClure was born on December 27, 1921 in Union County, the daughter of the late Thomas W. Teague and the late Minnie Mauney Teague.  Mrs. McClure had attended Young Harris College.  Prior to retirement she was employed as a bookkeeper with Union Hardware since 1963 and then became owner of the business for more than a decade.

            She was preceded in death by her husband, Loyd W. McClure in 1959.  Mrs. McClure was a member of the Ivy Log Baptist Church.

            Surviving Mrs. McClure are two daughters and one son-in-law, Deborah Smith and financee, Mike Stapleton of Cleveland, Tommye and Thomas Scanlin of Dahlonega; one sister, Doris Woods of Acworth; one brother and sister-in-law, Jack and Patricia Teague of Hapeville; seven grandchildren, Megan and Jacob Smith, Patrick, Sara, Tommy, Mary Ellen and Ricky Stapleton; many other relatives and friends also survive.

            Graveside services were held on Wednesday, December 17, 2003 at 1:00 pm from Ivy Log Baptist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Jerry Karnes officiating.  The Eulogy was given by Elmer Thompson.  If you wish, the family requests that memorials be made to the Ivy Log Baptist Church Cemetery Fund in Mrs. McClure’s memory.

nelle scobee akins

 

            Nelle Scobee Akins, age 58, of Rich Gap Road in Blairsville, passed away on Saturday, December 13, 2003 at Piedmont Hospital in Atlanta, following an extended illness.  Mrs. Akins was born on October 4, 1945 in Palm Beach, Florida, the daughter of the late Samuel J. Scobee and the late Nadine McIntosh Scobee.  She was a piano teacher and also served as pianist for her church.  Mrs. Akins was of the Methodist faith.

            Surviving Mrs. Akins are one son, Michael S. Akins; one daughter, Belinda Barker of Arrgon, Georgia; her former husband, Michael J. Akins of Blairsville; one grandchild, Trace Barker; many other relatives and friends also survive.

            Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, December 17, 2003 at 11:00 am from the Harmony Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Stacy Dyer and Rev. David Bowen officiating.  Special music was presented by Jean Thompson.  The following gentlemen served as Pallbearers, Michael S. Akins, Michael J. Akins, Keith Lager, Rich McIlvoy, Dave McIntosh and Mike McIntosh.

            Mountain View Funeral Home of Blairsville was in charge of arrangements.
