ella conley sword

 

Mrs. Ella Conley Sword, age 93, native of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away Monday, December 9, 2002 in Union County Nursing Home in Blairsville.

Mrs. Conley was born in Union County, Georgia, on Sunday, January 3, 1909, a daughter of the late Rufus Conley and Maggie Allen Conley.  She was a homemaker and the widow of the late Horry Sword, who passed away in 1989.  Mrs. Conley had lived most of her life in this area.

Survivors include a sister, Loraine Conley, of Blairsville; nieces and nephews: Dough Chapman, Simon Chapman, and Laura Fenner, all of Sacramento, California; Austin Conley, of Fayetteville, Georgia; Burl and Allen Conley, of Blairsville, and Julia Gray, of Blairsville; many friends and other relatives also survive.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, December 11, 2002, at 1:00 p.m., from the chapel of Cochran Funeral Home of Blairsville, with Rev. B.A. Buchanan officiating.  Special music was presented by Martha Davenport and Becky Rogers.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Fred Gray, Rick Gray, Shaun Conley, Burl Conley, Lee Baenninger, and Joe Gray.  Interment was in Ivy Log Cemetery.

MYRTLE LUCILLE ATKINS CRAWFORD

           

Mrs. Myrtle Lucille Atkins Crawford, age 85 of Morganton, GA passed away Monday, December 9, 2002, at the Fannin Regional Hospital.  Mrs. Crawford was a member of the Bethel United Methodist Church.  Mrs. Crawford was born October 15, 1917 in Union County, GA, the daughter of the late Ben and Vesta (Mason) Atkins.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Wayne Crawford.

Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Billy Nichols of Morganton, GA; one son and daughter-in-law, Benny and Brenda Crawford of Morganton, GA; brothers, Frank Atkins of Morganton, GA, and Ben Atkins of Forest Park, GA; sisters, Lillian Scroggs of Beach Island, SC, Flora Crawford of Morganton, GA and Winona Moore Trimer of Lawrenceville, GA; two grandchildren, Amy Nichols of Augusta, A, and Seth Crawford of the U.S. Navy, nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, December 11, 2002, at 11:00 a.m. from the Chapel of the Henry Cochran Funeral Home with Reverend Joe May and Reverend Charles Black officiating.  Music was provided by Greg Norton, Cathy Deaver, and Lucie McKinney.  Interment followed in the Concord Baptist Church Cemetery.  Serving as pallbearers were Keith Ferguson, David Crawford, Howie Bruce, James Crawford, Jimmy Brumbelow and Frank Tipton.

jesse cornelius patterson,

 

Mr. Jesse Cornelius Patterson, age 59, of Blairsville, Georgia, formerly of St. Petersburg, Florida, passed away Monday, December 9, 2002 at his home.

Mr. Patterson was born in Pinellas County, Florida, on Friday, November 5, 1943, a son of the late Raymond Patterson and Leila Jones Patterson.  He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force.  Mr. Patterson had been employed by the U.S. Postal Service as a letter carrier.  He had lived in Blairsville since September of this year, and was of the Methodist faith.

Survivors include his wife, Fannie Wright Patterson, of their home; son, Jesse Patterson, Jr. of Colorado Springs, Colorado; and Wendi Mitilinakis, of Hania, Greece; three sisters: Jeannie Teeple, of North Carolina; Linda Ryan of Virginia; Debbie Posey, of Westville, Indiana; four brothers: Alton Patterson, Julian Patterson, Raymonda “Pat” Patterson, and Fred Patterson, all of ST. Petersburg, Florida; grandson, Michael Mitilinakis; many friends and other relatives also survive.

No services are planned at this time.

joseph john smith

 

Mr. Joseph John Smith, age 83, of Blairsville, GA, native of Pennsylvania, and former resident of Maggie Valley, North Carolina, passed away Saturday, Dec. 7, 2002, in Murphy Medical Center Nursing Home in Murphy, North Carolina.

Mr. Smith was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served during World War II both in the European and African Theatre.  He was also a veteran of The Korean War.  Mr. Smith was a representative of an electronics manufacturing firm.  He and his wife had lived in Blairsville for approximately two years.  Mr. Smith was of the Catholic faith.

Survivors include his wife, Peggy, of their home; three daughters: Janet Smith, of Melbourne, FL; Gerry MacLeod, of Lawrenceville, GA; Cathy Stewart, of Marshall, NC; and two sons: Joseph Smith, of Middleburg, FL; and William Smith, of Blairsville; sister, Rita Daniels, of Maple Shade, NJ; three brothers: Phillip and Francis of Maple Shade and Jack of Camden, NJ; 9 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren also survive.

Memorial services are scheduled for Sat., Dec. 221, 2002, at 4 PM, from the chapel of Cochran Funeral Home in Blairsville, with Father Michael Kotter officiating.  Military honors will be conferred by North Georgia Honor Guard members.

kathaleen metcalf morse

 

Mrs. Kathaleen Metcalf Morse, age 93, of Wesley Mtn. Dr., Blairsville, passed away on Thursday Dec. 12, 2002 in the Union General Hospital following a brief illness.  Mrs. Morse was born on July 9, 1909 in Greenville, ME, the daughter of the late Harold Metcalf and the late Bernice Galusha Metcalf.  She was a lifetime member of the Eastern Star with seventy five years of membership.  She was preceded in death by a son, Harold M. Morse in 1993 and by her husband, Kenneth H. Morse in 1989.  Mrs. Morse attended the First United Methodist Church.

Surviving Mrs. Morse are one son and daughter in law, George and Pat Morse of Morganton, GA; one sister, Louis McDonald of Meredith, NH; two nephews, Dr. John Wray of Downergrove, IL, Michael McDonald of Wells, ME; two nieces, Captain Fay Wray of Silver Dale, WA, Mary Louise Davis of Meredith, NH; grandchildren, Gary W. Morse of Blairsville, Gail Berry of Corinth, ME, Gwen Libby of Windham, ME, George Morse Jr. of Apopka, FL, James Morse of Winter Park, FL; several great and great great grandchildren, many other relatives and friends also survive.

Memorial services were held on Saturday, Dec. 14, 2002 at 2:00 pm from the Funeral Home Chapel with the rev. Tom McElroy officiating.  Special music was presented by Dorothy Pickelsimer, and Hubert Legg.  In lieu of flowers if you wish, the family requests that memorials may be made to Brannon Lodge in Mrs. Morse’s memory.  Interment will follow in the Hillside Cemetery in Gorham, ME.

grace j. sparks

 

Grace J. Sparks, 89, went home to be with the Lord November 14, 2002.  Mrs. Sparks was born June 19, 1922 in Blairsville, GA and was a member of the Akron Baptist Temple for 53 years.

Grace was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Edwin; sister, Betty Nelson, and brother, Clyde Jr.  She is survived by sons, james (Becky), Jerry (Sheila), and David (Lynn) Sparks; daughters, Beverly (Daniel) Hubener, Marsha (Thomas) Drainer, and Deborah (Jeffrey) Sunderland; brother, Thomas (Jeanne) Mauney; and sister, Carolyn (Mac) Sullivan; 16 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at the Akron Baptist Temple, 2324 Manchester Rd., Akron, Ohio 44314 on Monday November 18, at 10:30 a.m. with Dr. Charles Billington officiating.  Interment at Greenlawn Memorial Park.  Memorials may be made to Akron Baptist Temple Building Fund, 2324 Manchester Rd., Akron, Ohio 44314.
