kenneth joe gladson

 

Mr. Kenneth Joe Gladson, age 62, of GA. Hay 180, Blairsville, passed away on Friday, Dec. 15, 2006 from injuries received in an automobile accident.  Mr. Gladson was born on Nov. 17, 1944 in Cherokee County, NC, the son of the late Emory Gladson and the late Pearl Tolar Gladson.  He was a lifelong resident of Union and Cherokee Counties.  He had been part owner of the Chevy Dealership in Blairsville, had owned and operated the Blairsville Chevron Station, was owner of G&C Used Cars and Auto Rental, and at the time of his death was employed with Car Man Auto Sales of Blairsville.  He was preceded in death by a sister, Kathleen Ramsey and a brother-in-law, Rick Singleton.  Mr. Gladson was a member of Pine Top Baptist Church.

Surviving Mr. Gladson are his loving wife of thirty-seven years, Betty Marshall Gladson of Blairsville, one daughter and son-in-law, Kim and Brad Hamer of Young Harris, GA, one brother and sister-in-law, Harold and Betty Gladson of Murphy, two sisters and one brother-in-law, Sue Singleton of Loganville, GA, Christine and Gaines Jones of Lithonia, two grandchildren, Easton and Kaelyn Hamer, many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Monday Dec. 18, 2006 at 11:00 am from the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Jimmy Tanner, Rev Henry Loggins and Benny Erwin officiating.  Special music was presented by Calvin Hood, Dayton Dyer and Henry Loggins.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers, John Mason, Steven Dyer, Richard Copeland, Jack Taylor, Michael Diaz and Charles Greenway.  Serving as honorary pallbearers were Donald Fortenberry, Dennis Hamby, Franklin Hunter, Keith Shelnut, Jeff Stites, Kenneth Jones and Johnny Gladson.  Interment followed in the Mt. Pleasant Church Cemetery in Murphy, NC.

elizabeth “bettie” shipman thompson

 

Mrs. Elizabeth “Bettie” Shipman Thompson, age 92, of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away peacefully at her home Friday, December 15, 2006.  Mrs. Thompson was born Thursday, January 15, 1914 in Brooklyn, New York, to the late Edward Tuthill Shipman and the late Emily Louise Wait Shipman.  She attended schools in Brooklyn, including Girls Commercial High School, where she earned four years highest honors in science.  After attending Brooklyn College, she was employed by Shell Oil Company.  She lived in Stamford, Connecticutt and Miami, Florida before moving to Blairsville in 1976. Before her retirement, she was employed by Burdine’s in Miami and also operated the This ‘n’ That Shop for Plymouth Congregational Church in Coconut Grove.  Her primary commitment, always, however was to being a wife and mother.  After moving to Blairsville, Mrs. Thompson was a member of First United Methodist Church of Union County.

Survivors include her loving husband of 65 years, Edward T. Thompson of Blairsville; daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth and Terry Kelley of St. Augustine, Florida; son and daughter-in-law, E. Thomas “Tom” and MiLan Thompson of Norcross, Georgia; daughter, Dr. Nancy Thompson of Atlanta, Georgia; brother and sister-in-law, Frederick E. and Teresa Shipman of Tonawanda, New York; cousin, Ora Renesse of Massa Pequa, New York; granddaughter, Nancy Jennifer Folsom, granddaughter and husband, Holly Elizabeth and Matthew Vaupel, grandson and wife, William Edward and Sonia Folsom, great granddaughter, Emily Mae Folsom, great granddaughter, Aubrielle Christiane Vaupel and step-great granddaughter, Florence Rubio.

Memorial services will be held Monday, January 15, 2007 at 2:00 PM from the First United Methodist Church of Union County with the Rev. Nancy Joyner officiating.  Interment will be in the Georgia National Cemetery.

The family received friends at the funeral home Monday, December 18th from 5 until 8 PM.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations may be made to Meals on Wheels.

ella faye mashburn

 

Ella Faye Mashburn, age 72, of Blairsville, GA died Wednesday December 13, 2006 in a Dekalb County, GA hospice.  She was a native of Union County where she had lived most of her life.  She was a daughter of the late John and Callie Henderson Mashburn.  She was a homemaker and a member of the First Baptist Church in Cornelia, GA.  She was preceded in death by two sisters, Willa Mae Mashburn, and May Lee Mashburn.

Surviving are several cousins.

Funeral services were held at 3:p.m. Sunday, December 17, 2006 in the Chapel of the Ivie Funeral Home, Murphy with Rev. Scott Slaton officiating.  Interment was in the Ebenezer Baptist Church Cemetery in Union County, GA.  Pallbearers were Edward, Robert, and Brian Mashburn, Tommy Dockery, Charles King, and Tony Gilbert.  The family received friends from 1:30-2:45 Sunday at the Ivie Funeral Home, Murphy prior to the services.

margaret hensley morgan

 

Mrs. Margaret Hensley Morgan, age 85, of Blairsville, GA, passed away Saturday, December 16, 2006 in North-East Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville, GA.  Mrs. Morgan was born Saturday, April 16, 1921 in Jackson County, NC, to the late Jule Hensley and the late Lury Sutton Hensley.  Mrs. Morgan was a member of Fairview Baptist Church.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank B. Morgan; a brother, Luther Hensley and a niece, Martha Raper.

Survivors are: brother, Corbit Hensley of Gastonia, NC; nieces and nephews: Brenda and Thom Gay, of Blairsville, GA; Joy and Willie Lackey, of Gastonia, NC; Jerry and Dot Hensley, also of Gastonia; Elizabeth and Keith Dyer, of Morganton, GA; and Waymon and Shanna Lovell, of Blairsville; nephew, Hoyt (Martha) Raper, of Blairsville; sister-in-law, Mary (Marcus) Hensley, of Blairsville; great-nieces and nephews: Roy and Sheena Johnson; Michael and Stacy Raper; Julie Raper; Jason Ownsby; Christ Hensley; great-great-niece, Kaley Raper and great-great nephews, Michael and Zachry Raper.  Many other family members and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, December 19, 2006 at 2 p.m. from the Chapel of the Cochran Funeral Home with the rev. R. L. martin and Rev. Ray Potts officiating.  Music was provided by Joe and Julie Gray.  Interment was in Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery.  Serving as pallbearers were: Albert Davenport, Jimmy Davis, Michael Brey, Roy Phillips, Thom Gay and Max Cochran.

eva lorena abercrombie

 

Mrs. Eva Lorena Abercrombie, age 73, of Suches, GA, passed away Tuesday, December 12, 2006 at the Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville, GA following an extended illness.  A native and lifelong resident of Union County, Mrs. Abercrombie was the daughter of the late John Berry and Bessie Bowers Harkins.  She was a member of Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church in Suches.  She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother.  Always putting others before herself, Mrs. Abercrombie had a passion for acting as mother, grandmother, and special friend to everyone who knew her.  She retired from Burlington-Pinetree Plant in Dahlonega after 33 years of dedicated service.  She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 35 years, Ray Abercrombie.  In addition to her husband and parents, she was also preceded in death by her sisters Clara Mae Corn, Mamie Garrett, and Mabell Hensley; brothers Vernon (Pete) Harkins and Ernest Harkins.

Mrs. Abercrombie is survived by daughters: Faye Sterling of Suches, GA, Dianne Abercrombie of Suches, GA; grandchildren, Melissa Sterling of Suches, GA, Christopher Sterling of Suches, GA; brothers and sisters-in-law, Mac and Juanita Harkins of Blairsville, GA, Grapelle Harkins of Blairsville, GA, Velma Harkins of Blairsville, GA; brothers-in-law, Corbit Hensley of Gastonia, NC and John Corn of Toccoa, GA.  Many nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. Friday, December 15, 2006 at the Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church with the remains placed in state at 2 p.m. Friday.  Rev. Jimmy Tanner and Rev. Clarence Drummond officiated.  Interment followed in the church cemetery.  The family received friends at the funeral home on Thursday, December 14, 2006 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Mrs. Marian Janette Souther, age 72, of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away Friday, December 15, 2006 at Stonehenge Assisted Living Center in Blairsville.

Mrs. Souther was born Monday, May 21, 1934 in Greenville County, South Carolina, to the late Garnett and Kathleen Kay Ballew.  She was a U.S. Army veteran and served in Washington, D.C. during the Korean War.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Wayne Souther.

Survivors include several nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Funeral services were held Monday, December 18, 2006 at 1:00 p.m. from the Chapel of Cochran Funeral Home with Rev. Jerry Young and Rev. Wade Plott officiating.  Music was provided by the New Liberty Choir, Mary Ann Wright and Marcia Barrett.  Interment followed in New Liberty Baptist Church Cemetery.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Mike Souther, Chad Farrell, Rick Gray, Shawn Barrett, Drace Farrell, and Terry Barrett.

Mrs. Winona Dyer Souther, age 75, native and lifelong resident of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away Friday, December 15, 2006 at her home.  Mrs. Souther was born Wednesday, may 6, 1931 in Union County, Georgia, to the late Jewell Dyer and the late Irene Deaton Dyer.  She was a member of Union Baptist Church.  Mrs. Dyer was preceded in death by her husband, F.C. Souther; a sister, Hazel Self and brothers Herman and Cecil Dyer.

Survivors include: daughter and son-in-law, Linda Sue and David Farrell; brothers, R.M. Dyer, Tommy Dyer, Charles Dyer and Lonnie Dyer, all of Blairsville; and sisters, Lillian Hughes of Blairsville, and Geneva Self of Gainesville, Georgia; granddaughter and husband, Pam and Rick Gray; grandson, Chad Farrell; and great granddaughters, Brooke and Lydia Gray.  Several nieces, nephews and other relatives also survive.

Funeral services were held Monday, December 18, 2006 at 1:00 PM from the Chapel of the Cochran Funeral Home with Rev. Jerry Young and Rev. Wade Plott officiating.  Music was provided by Mary Ann Wright, the New Liberty Choir and Marcia Barrett.  Interment followed in the New Liberty Baptist Church Cemetery.  Serving as pallbearers were the following gentlemen: Mike Souther, Chad Farrell, Rick Gray, Terry Barrett, Ronnie Dyer and Dennis Dyer.

Mrs. Flora (Better known as Ann) Bishop, age 77, of Holbrook Place Blairsville passed away on Sunday, December 17, 2006 in the Union General Hospital following an extended illness.  Mrs. Bishop was born on September 19, 1929 in West Palm Beach, FL, the daughter of the late Richard Sticklen and the late Eva Shields Sticklen.  She and her husband Richard had made their home in Blairsville for the past twenty two years, moving here from West palm Beach.  She was a member of the Eastern Star and a Past Worthy Matron.  Mrs. Bishop was a member of the House Of Prayer Church.

Surviving Mrs. Bishop are her loving husband of fifty four years, Richard Bishop of Blairsville; one son and daughter-in-law, Marshall and Mary Bishop of west Palm Beach, FL, three grandchildren, Christopher, Nicole and Kyle bishop, many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, December 21, 2006 at 1 p.m. from the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Jerry Helton and Rev. Bill Honaker officiating.  Special music was presented by the House of Prayer Church Choir.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers, Gollie Easter, Ed Turner, Carl Bonham, Bob Woodstock, Nelson Thomas and Wade Smith.  Interment followed in the House of Prayer Church Cemetery.

william m. “bill” Mcintosh III

 

Mr. William M., “Bill” McIntosh III, age 71, of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away Thursday, December 14, 2006 at his home.  Mr. McIntosh was born Sunday, December 1, 1935, in Richmond, Virginia, to the late William Morgan McIntosh, Jr. and the late Thanetta Malsby McIntosh.  Mr. McIntosh attended the House of Prayer Church in Blairsville.  He had lived in Blairsville for the past 5 years, moving here from Kennesaw, Georgia.  He was formerly of Savannah, Georgia.  Bill was a member of The Union County Elections Board, Chatuge Gun Club, and Sons of Confederate Veterans.  A 1963 graduate of Georgia Tech, he was also a member of the Georgia Tech Alumni Association.  He was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include his loving wife of 46 years, Dottie McIntosh of Blairsville; daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Brian Ehret of Savannah, Georgia; daughter and son-in-law, Christina and Robbie Lawrence of Kennesaw, Georgia; son, William M. McIntosh, IV of New Orleans, Louisiana; son and daughter-in-law, Adam and Jennifer McIntosh of Marietta, Georgia; sister, Gaye Lutz of Doraville, Georgia; grandchildren: Andrew Ehret, Kendall Ehret, Emily Ehret, Stephen Ehret, Alex Ehret, Abbie Lawrence, Nathan Lawrence, and Elisa McIntosh.

Memorial services were held Sunday, December 17, 2006 at 3:00 p.m. from the House of Prayer Church with pastor Bill Honaker officiating.  Music was provided by The House of Prayer Church Choir.

Mrs. Judy Saxon, age 53, of Blairsville, GA, passed away Monday, December 11, 2006 at her home.  Mrs. Saxon was born Friday, June 19, 1953 in Cobb County, GA, to the late Audie H. and the late Rowena (McClure) Brown.  She was a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church and co-owner of Blairsville Auto Parts.

Survivors include: husband, Dean Saxon; daughter & son-in-law, Deanna and Jamie Burnette; son, Derek Saxon; sisters: Diane Patterson, and Shirley Odom, and granddaughter, Lillian Burnette, all of Blairsville. Many friends and other relatives also survive.

Funeral services were held Thursday December 14th at 2 p.m. from the Chapel of the Cochran Funeral Home with the Rev. Charles Black officiating.  Music was provided by Lonnie McClure.  Interment followed in the Family Cemetery.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Mike Jones, Jamie Burnette, Danny Dyer, Bill Clement, Clarence Gibson and Johnny Burnette.  The family received friends at the funeral home Wednesday evening from 6-9 p.m.
