edwin david lovell

 

            Edwin David Lovell, age 80 of Laprad Circle, Gainesville, passed away on Wednesday, December 2, 2009 at Northeast Georgia Medical Center following sudden illness. 

            Funeral services were held Saturday, December 5, 2009 at 2 p.m. in the Chapel of memorial Park Funeral Home with interment to follow in Memorial Park Cemetery.  Reverend Brian Malcomb officiated.  The family received friends on Thursday December 3, 2009 and Friday, December 5, 2009 from 6-9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mr. Lovell was born November 4, 1929 in Union County, Georgia to the late Verdie Lovell and Lelia Stephens Lovell.  Edwin retired from Gainesville Mill with 40 years of service and was also the co-owner of Lovell Service Center.  Mr. Lovell was a member of Oak Grove Baptist church and was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Ray Lovell.   

Mr. Lovell is survived by his wife, Bonnie Elliott Lovell of Gainesville, his daughter & son-in-law, Barbara & Johnny Gillespie of Gainesville, his son & daughter-in-law, Hoyt & Peggy Lovell of Gillsville, his son, Ken Lovell of Commerce, his son & daughter-in-law, Mike & Anita Lovell of Cleveland, 10 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren, brother, Franklin Lovell of Flowery Branch, brothers & sisters-in-law, troy & Pat Lovell of Young Harris and Tom & Betty Lovell of Cleveland, sisters, Thelma Smith of Blairsville and Marie Underwood of Hiawassee, sister-in-law, Maxine Lovell of Gainesville, sister & brother-in-law, Frances & Ray Hughes of Blairsville.

anna may miller

 

            Mrs. Anna May Miller, age 92, of Teboe Drive, Blairsville, passed away on Saturday Dec. 19, 2009 in the Chatuge Regional Nursing Home following an extended illness.  Mrs. Miller was born on June 10, 1917 in Dinora, PA, the daughter of the late Bruce Rata and the late Margaret Rata.  Before her retirement she served as Executive Secretary for General motors for over forty years.  She was a loving mother, sister, grandmother and great grandmother.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl C. Miller in 1982, a daughter, Leah May Mullens in 2002, four brothers, Walter, Chester, Henry and John, three sisters, Mary, Elizabeth and Helen.  Mrs. Miller was a member of St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in South Lyons, MI,   

            Surviving Mrs. Miller are one son and daughter-in-law, Walter and Sheryll Miller of Blairsville, one brother, Henry Rata of MI, three grandchildren, Jill, Jimmy and Billy, nine great grandchildren, many other relatives and friends also survive.

            A memorial service will be held at a later date and will be announced.  In lieu of flowers if you wish, the family requests that memorial donations may be made to The American Cancer Society or to Union County Humane Society or to Paralyzed Veterans of America in memory of Mrs. Miller.

ruth lance

 

            Mrs. Ruth Lance, age 72, of Blairsville, GA, passed away December 14, 2009 at Union General Hospital 

Ruth was born on May 3, 1937 in Wilcox County, GA, to the late Robert Lee and Sally Mae Wilkerson.  Ruth was preceded in death by husband, Richmond Lance, daughters, Connie Keiger and Deborah Shearouse, two brothers and two sisters. 

Survivors include: daughter & son-in-law, Diane and Daniel Abernathy of Murphy, NC, granddaughters, Kimberly Weinberg, Kristina Mason, Christy Lynn Shearouse, Carolyn Shearouse, Caitlyn Shearouse and Hailey Abernathy, grandsons, Mitchell Lance, Matthew Abernathy and Tommy Shearouse, sisters, Bobbie Mae Smallwood of Toccoa, GA, Eugeneia Sheets of Dawsonville, GA, Mary Lee Butler of Dawsonville, GA, Dorcus Webb of Oakwood, GA, Mattie Lovett of Fitzgerald, GA and Grace Reeves of Cumming, GA, brother, Millard Wilkerson of Buford, GA, great grandson, Austin Weinberg, great granddaughter, Mackenzie Weinberg, Jordyn Mason, Dannika Mason several nieces and nephews.

            Funeral services were held Saturday, December 19, 2009 at 11 AM from the Cochran Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Grady Ray and Rev. Allen Swofford officiating.  Music was provided by Linda Swofford.

Pallbearers were Mitchell Lance, Adam Weinberg, Clayton Mason, Daniel Abernathy, Tony Prickett and L.J. Keiger.  Burial followed in Mt. Zion Baptist church Cemetery. 

            The family received friends at the Cochran Funeral Home Friday, December 18, 2009 from 6 until 9 PM.

viola “odie” vandiver

 

            Mrs. Viola “Odie” Vandiver, age 80, of Blairsville, GA, passed away December 15, 2009 at Chatuge Regional Hospital in Hiawassee, GA. 

Mrs. Vandiver was born on Thursday, March 14, 1929 in Union County, Georgia, to Augustus Thomas and Dollie Mae (Stephens) Thomas.  Mrs. Vandiver was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Vandiver, brothers: Cicero Thomas and Junior Thomas; and sisters: Zelma McClure, Maebell McClure and Norene Stover.  She was of the Baptist faith. 

Survivors include: Special friend, Robert Green, of Blairsville; daughter and son-in-law: Judy and Harold Berry of Blairsville; daughter, Bonnie Sue Vandiver of Hayesville, NC; son: James Thomas; brother, Harold Thomas, both of Blairsville; sisters: Leona Harkins of Dahlonega Edna Hughes, and Pauline Sosebee both of Blairsville; granddaughters: Jamie Payne, Heather Deyton, Tonia Huggins, Diamond Clark, Autumn Clark; grandsons: Joshua Berry, Bo Berry, Casey Shadix and 7 great grandchildren. Many other relatives and friends also survive.

The family received friends at the Cochran Funeral Home Thursday, December 17, 2009 from 6 PM until 9 PM.              Funeral services were held on Friday, December 18, 2009 in the Cochran Funeral Home Chapel at 2 PM with rev. ray Potts and Rev. Jerry Young officiating.  Music was provided by Re. Chris Rumfelt, Lucas Phillips, and Chelsey Phillips.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Shane Payne, Bobby Huggins, Joshua Berry, Bo Berry, Chad Deyton and Casey Shadix.  Interment followed in Zebulon Baptist Church Cemetery.

tommy (t.g) Garlin fortenberry

 

            Mr. Tommy (Better known at T.G.) Garlin Fortenberry, age 63, of Jewell Mason Rd., Blairsville passed away on Thursday Dec. 17, 2009 at his home following an extended illness.  Mr. Fortenberry was born on March 8, 1946 in Union County, the son of the late Frank Freeman Fortenberry and the late Hattie Alice Gibson Fortenberry.  He was a native and life long resident of Union County.  Tommy was a brick mason for many years.  Mr. Fortenberry attended Fairview Baptist Church. 

            Surviving Mr. Fortenberry are four children, Bobby Fortenberry of Blairsville, Lori and Ryan Adams of Virginia Beach, VA, Angie Gosset of Woodstock, GA, Alan Fortenberry of Winder, GA, one sister, Mary Jo McGowan of Cedar Park, TX, seven grandchildren, Hawk, Errin, Heather, Bobby Dalton, Foster, Jeremiah and Joshua, several cousins, many other relatives and friends also survive.

            Funeral services were held on Sunday Dec. 20,l 2009 at 2:00 p.m. from the Mountain View Chapel with the Rev. Jim Beasley and Rev. Tommy Jones officiating.  Special music was presented by John Nix, Ken Young and Bobby Chapman.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers, Bobby Fortenberry, L.J. Brown, Doug Brown, Richard Brown, Kenneth Picklesimer, Cody Kitchens, Ryan Adams and Ted Lunsford.  Interment will follow in the Hiawassee Baptist Church Cemetery.  The family met with friends at the funeral home on Saturday evening from 6-9 p.m.

val gene mcguire

 

            Mr. Val Gene McGuire, age 72, of Four Seasons Landing, of Blairsville, passed away on Friday, Dec. 18, 2009 at Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville following a brief illness.  Mr. McGuire was born on May 16, 1937 in Johnston City, IL, the son of the late Ralph McGuire and the late Dorothy Eberhardt McGuire.  Val was a member of glen Park Lodge #132 F&AM of Merrillville, IN, the Orak Shrine Temple in Southbend, IN, the Scottish Rite, A Royal Arch Mason, he attended Allegheny Lodge #114 and Local #1014 United Steel Workers.  He was also a member of the Methodist Men.  He was a loving husband, father and grandfather.  Mr. McGuire was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Union County in Blairsville. 

            Surviving Mr. McGuire are his loving wife of fifty-two years, Gail Jolliff McGuire of Blairsville, daughter and son-in-law, Valerie and Alan Jarvis of Bonita Springs, FL, son, Lawrence McGuire of N. Fort Myers, FL, and his five grandchildren, Adrianne, A.J., Natalie, Kaylie and Trevor.  And a close friend, Margaret Sanders of N. Fort Myers, FL. 

            Funeral services were held on Sunday, Dec. 20, 2009 at 3 p.m. at the First United Methodist church of Union County with the Rev. Ben Lewis officiating.  Music was provided by Jeff Bauman and Keith Defoor.  The body did lie in state at the church from 2 p.m. until 3 p.m. on Sunday.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the First UMC-MAC, the Mountain Animal Shelter and Castaway Critters.
