mr. charles a. hannon

 

            Mr. Charles A. Hannon, 61, of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away Thursday, December 12, 1996 in Lanier Park Hospital in Gainesville, GA. 

Mr. Hannon was born May 13, 1935, in Jackson County, Missouri.  He was a veteran of the U. S. Marines and served in the Korean War.  He had lived in Blairsville for the past two years, coming here from Douglas, Wyoming.  Mr. Hannon was a lifetime member of the Veteran’s of Foreign Wars. 

            Surviving are his wife, Mary. R. Hannon, of Blairsville; his mother, Harriett Hannon, of Murphy, NC; step son, Larry Jones, of Virginia Beach, VA; step daughter, Marlyn Lang of Satellite Beach, FL; step son, Gary  Jones, of Independence, Missouri; and step daughter, Teresa Ireland, of Castleberry, FL; also his sister, Carol Hannon, of Murphy. 

            Graveside services were held Monday, December 16, 1996 at 1 p.m. from Chattanooga National Cemetery. 

Cochran Funeral Home of Blairsville was in charge of arrangements.

mrs. nellie l. payne

 

            Mrs. Nellie L. Payne, 81 of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away Saturday, December 14, 1996 at her home. 

Mrs. Payne was born in Union County, Georgia, on June 15, 1915, a daughter of the late Thomas Dyer and Mary McGlamery Dyer.  She was a homemaker and a lifelong resident of this area.  Mrs. Payne was a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church.  Preceding her in death were brothers: Jack, Howard, Grady, Terrell, A. V. and Tommy Dyer; sisters: Adekate King of Blairsville and Minnie Holbrooks of Blue Ridge. 

            Surviving are husband, Bruce Payne, of Blairsville; children: Ernest A. Payne, and Ethel Ann Payne, both of Blairsville, and Louise Worthington, of Cartersville, GA; brother, Roy Dyer, of Blairsville, and sister, Bell Jones, of Cartersville; eight grandchildren, ten great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews also survive.

            Funeral services were held Monday, December 16, 1996 at 2 p.m. from the Chapel of Cochran Funeral Home of Blairsville with Rev. Steve Youngblood and Rev. Earl Pickelsimer officiating.  Special music was presented by Dorothy Pickelsimer and Kennith (sic) Young.  Serving as pallbearers Dennis Worthington, Gary Payne, Melvin Payne, Clyde Payne, Johnny Wallace, and Gordon Payne.  Interment was in Pleasant Hill Baptist Church Cemetery.

mae mccallister

 

            Mae McCallister, 83, of Blairsville, Georgia formerly of Winter Park, FL died Tuesday, December 12, 199 (sic) at her residence.  She was a native of Charleston, WV, living eight years in Orange County, FL prior to moving to Union County, GA in 1995.  She was a daughter of the late William A. and Rebecca Kelly Wells and the wife of the late W. P. McCallister who died in 1985.  She was a retired School lunchroom dietitian and a member of the Nazarene Church. 

            Surviving are one daughter, Norma J. Cooper of Blairsville, GA; one son, Frank E. McCallister of Scottsdale, AZ; one sister, Merle Baldock of Charleston, WV; eight grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren. 

            Services were Friday, December 20th at 1 p.m. in the chapel of Quattlebaum-Holleman-Burse Funeral Home in Winter Park, FL.  Interment was in Glenn Haven Memorial Park. 

            The family request that memorials may be made to the Hand in Hand Hospice Agency, 234 Main Street Station, Hiawassee, GA 30546.

mrs. ruth todd bessman

 

            Mrs. Ruth Todd Bessman, 82, of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away, Monday, December 16, 1996 in Union General Hospital in Blairsville. 

Mrs. Bessman was born in Robertson County, Tennessee, on September 23, 1914, a daughter of the late Walter Thomas Todd and Cora Mable Stroud Todd.  Mrs. Bessman moved to the Blairsville area in 1977, coming here from West Palm Beach.  She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Blairsville, and was an honorary member of Union General Hospital Auxiliary. 

            Surviving are her niece, Teresa Ann Patterson, of West Palm Beach; and two nephews, Kenneth Stroud Todd, Jr. and Walter Thomas Todd, both of West Palm Beach. 

            Funeral services were held Wednesday December 18, 1996 at 2 p.m. from the Chapel of the Cochran Funeral Home of Blairsville with Dr. Robert Darby officiating.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: John Gurley, Stan Kneeshaw, Hank Hall, Paul Colditz, Al Horning, and Fred Williams.  Member of the Union General Hospital Auxiliary served as honorary escort to the family.  Interment was in Union Memory Gardens Cemetery.

            Cochran Funeral Home of Blairsville was in charge of arrangements.
