paul w. souther

 

Mr. Paul W. Souther, age 96, of Huntsville, Alabama, formerly of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away on Monday, December 22, 2003 in Crestwood Medical Center in Huntsville.

Mr. Souther was born in Union County, Georgia on Thursday, December 27, 1906, a son of the late Jesse Benjamin Souther and Dovie Caroline Townsend Souther.  He was a farmer and lived most of his life in Union County.  Mr. Souther was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church.  He had served on the board of Blue Ridge Mountain Electric Membership Corporation.  His grandfather was Jesse Wilburn Souther, a Civil War Veteran, who was one of the Commissioners responsible for building the historic Union County Courthouse building.  Mr. Souther was preceded in death by his wife, Mabel Mauney Souther, who passed away in 1993.

Survivors include his three children, Charles Souther of Huntsville, Alabama, Suell Souther, of Blairsville and Buell Souther, of Dallas, Georgia; a sister, Pearl Wellborn, of Blairsville; eight grandchildren and a host of great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren and many other friends and relatives.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, December 27, 2003 at 2:00 pm at Ebenezer Baptist Church with Rev. Tom Ford officiating.  Special music was provided by Ebenezer Baptist Church Choir.  The following gentlemen served as Pallbearers, Jim Reece, Joe Maxwell, Vernon Barnes, Stanley Stepp, Brian Souther and Brad Barnes.  Burial was in the Ebenezer Baptist Church Cemetery.

robert eugene smith

 

Mr. Robert Eugene Smith, age 67, of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away on Saturday, December 27, 2003 at St. Josephs Hospital in Atlanta.

Mr. Smith was born in Cook County, Illinois, on Wednesday, September 23, 1936, a son of the late Robert Smith and Irene LaMarche Smith.  He had been a manager with a soft drink manufacturer.  Mr. Smith and his wife moved to Blairsville in 1995 from North Miami Beach, Florida.  He was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church.

Surviving are his wife, Joyce Graves Smith, of the home; children, Mark LeSage of Canton, Georgia, Scott LeSage of Belleview, Florida, Lori Moshier of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, Dale Smith of Maryville, Tennessee and Keith smith of Canton, Georgia; grandchildren, Chris Pierno, Brian LeSage, Aaron LeSage, Nicole LeSage, Hailey LeSage, Hunter LeSage, Asa LeSage, Jennifer Moshier, Robert Moshier, Larry Moshier, Hannah Smith and Cameron Smith; great-granddaughter, Jayden Pierno; many other relatives and many friends also survive.

Funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday, December 31, 2003 at 11:00 am from St. Francis of Assisi Catholic church, with Father Richard Wise officiating.  Visitation and viewing will be held at Cochran Funeral Home on Wednesday morning, from 9:00 until 10:30 am.  The following gentlemen served as Pallbearers: Keith Smith, Mark LeSage, Scott LeSage, Robert Moshier, Larry Moshier and Raymond Klein.

If you wish, the family has suggested memorial contributions be made to either The American Cancer Society, The Diabetes Foundation or to Make-A-Wish Foundation.

jessie sweat

 

Jessie Sweat, age 87, of Cartersville, died Saturday, December 13, 2003.

Mrs. Sweat was born on August 5, 1916, in Union County, a daughter of the late Ed and Pearl Caldwell Jones.

She was of the Methodist faith and a retired bookkeeper.

Preceded in death by her husband, Arthur R. Sweat, Jr., in 1961, she is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Skip and Helen Sweat of Cartersville, and Wally and Lanese Sweat of Eatonton, PA; grandchildren, Tina Sweat, Trudy Woods, Tara Linley and Wyatt Sweat; great-grandchildren, Tyler and Kelsey Woods; two brothers, Edward Jones of Nevada and Candler Jones of Cincinnati, OH; and a sister, Barbara Photonias of Blairsville.

Graveside services were held at 2:00 pm on Monday, December 15, 2003 from the Oak Hill Cemetery with Kenny Jacobs officiating. 

Owen Funeral Home of Cartersville was in charge of arrangements.

alma townsend cordell

 

Mrs. Alma Townsend Cordell, age 97, of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away Wednesday, December 24, 2003 in Union County Nursing Home in Blairsville.

Mrs. Cordell was born in Towns County, Georgia on Tuesday, December 4, 1906, a daughter of the late John Townsend and Inda Howell Townsend.  She was a homemaker and member of Bellview Methodist Church.  Her husband, David Cordell, passed away in 1979.

Surviving are daughters, Minnie Cordell Ownbey and Nita Cordell Foster, both of Blairsville; three nieces, Marie Beckworth and Ernestine McDuffie, of Marietta, and Barbara Pass of Columbus, Georgia; nephew, Charles Erwin of Young Harris; a sister, Thelma Harris, of Blairsville; seven step-grandchildren and also survive, along with many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Saturday, December 27, 2003 at 11:00 am from the chapel of Cochran Funeral Home of Blairsville with Rev. Pat Miller and Rev. Tom Barney officiating.  Special music was presented by R. Terry Hooper and James Hooper.  The following gentlemen served as Pallbearers: Tim Odom, Steve Foster, Roger Ownbey, Charles Erwin, Ken Beckworth, Gene McDuffie, James Pass and Don Rogers.  Burial was in the Old Union Baptist Church Cemetery.

emma elizabeth ott

 

Mrs. Emma Elizabeth Ott, age 88, of Murphy Highway in Blairsville, passed away on Tuesday, December 23, 2003 at her home following an extended illness.  Mrs. Ott was born on April 1, 1915 in Pittsburg, PA., the daughter of the late Thomas Albert Coates and the late Monica Jackson Coates.  Mrs. Ott was a member of the Church of the Good Shepherd Church in Hayesville.

Surviving Mrs. Ott are her loving husband of sixty six years, Charles (Chuck) Ott of Blairsville, one son and daughter-in-law, Tom (chuck) and Nancy Ott of Morganton, Georgia; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; many other relatives and friends also survive.

Memorial services were held on Tuesday, December 20, 2003 at 11:00 am from the Church of the Good Shepherd in Hayesville, with the Rev. John Rice officiating.  If you wish, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the Hospice of North East Georgia in Mrs. Otts memory.

Mountain View Funeral Home of Blairsville was in charge of the arrangements.

eual mary elizabeth hampton

 

Mrs. Eual Mary Elizabeth Hampton, age 90, of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away on Sunday, December 28, 2003 in Union County Nursing Home in Blairsville.

Mrs. Hampton was born in Union County, Georgia on Thursday, May 1, 1913, a daughter of the late Jim Miller and Sarah Dyer Miller.  Mrs. Hampton had been preceded in death by her husband, James Dennis Hampton.  She and her husband were the owners and operators of Community Grocery, that had been located on the Old Blue Ridge Highway in Blairsville.  Mrs. Hampton was a member of First Baptist Church of Blairsville.  Preceding her in death were two sisters, Dessa Plemmons, Ethel Chastain; two brothers, Jewell Miller and Woodrow Miller.

Surviving are a daughter, Oriska Jean Hampton, of Blairsville; nephew and niece, Dillon and Mary Magdeline Chastain, of Blairsville; two sisters-in-law, Blanche Miller of Griffin, Georgia and Alva Hensley, of Ohio; several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, December 31, 2003 at 2:00 pm from the chapel of Cochran Funeral Home in Blairsville with Rev. Danny Parris and Rev. B.A. Buchanan officiating.  Special music was presented by Minister of Music, R. Terry Hooper.  The following gentlemen have been selected to serve as Pallbearers: Neal Moon, Billy Decker, David Payne, Bobby Brooks, Bradley Harwood and Adam Chastain.  Visitation at the funeral home will be on Wednesday before the funeral, starting at 1:00 pm.  Burial will be in Hampton Church Cemetery in Murphy, North Carolina.

oleta edith martin jackson

 

Mrs. Oleta Edith Martin Jackson, age 87, of Cobb County, Georgia, formerly of Blairsville passed away Monday, December 20, 2003 in Wellstar Kennestone Hospital in Marietta.

Mrs. Jackson was born in Cherokee County, NC., on Monday, January 3, 1916, a daughter of the late Julius B. Martin and Ada Donaldson Martin.  She had lived in Cobb County for 53 years and was employed by Kennestone Hospital for eight years.  Mrs. Jackson was a homemaker and member of Lakewood Baptist Church.  She had been preceded in death by her husband, Ernest E. Jackson.

Surviving are a son, Mac Jackson, of Hartwell, Georgia; two daughters, Betty Goss of Athens, Ga., and Janie Yarbrough, of Smyrna, GA; seven grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews also survive.

Graveside services were held Monday, December 22, 2003 at 2:00 pm from Antioch Baptist Church with pastor Ernest Hunicutt officiating. 

Medford-Peden Funeral Home of Marietta was in charge of arrangements.
