Mr.
John F. Berry, age 76, of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away Friday,
December
19, 1997 in Atlanta.
Mr. Berry
was born in Towns County, Georgia, on March 31, 1921 son of the late
William
Jefferson Berry and Ila Jane Frady Berry.
He was a world (sic War II veteran of the U.S. navy. After his discharge from the Navy, he attended
Young Harris College and the University of Georgia.
Locally, he taught the Veteran’s Farm
Training program from 1949-1955. In
19957, Mr. Berry went to work for the U.S. Justice Dept. as a deputy
federal
marshal. He retired in 1978.
Surviving
are son, William Robert Berry, of Blairsville; and daughter, Annette
Berry
Crawford, of Lawrenceville; sister, Jessie Berry Fields and brother in
law,
Olin H. Fields, both of Morrow, Georgia; grandson, John Charles Berry,
of
Murfreesboro, TN also survives.
Funeral
services were held Monday, December 22, 1997 at 2 p.m. from the chapel
of
Cochran Funeral Home in Blairsville with Rev. Dean Head and Rev. Danny
Parris
officiating. Special music was presented
by Mrs. Jo Mosley. The following
gentlemen served as pallbearers: John
Nix, Clayton Nix, Roy Colucci, Leonard Sosebee, Jack Robinson, Charles Trulove.

Mr.
Carl E. Hagan, age 65, of Blairsville, Georgia passed away Sunday,
December 14,
1997 in Union County, Georgia.
Mr. Hagan was born in Gilmer
County, Georgia, on May 7, 1932, a son of the late John Hagan and
Minnie
Ridings Hagan. He was a veteran of the
US Air Force. Mr. Hagan had lived in the
Blairsville area for the past seven years, coming from Ellijay, Georgia. He was a member of Faith Baptist Church, and
of the Disabled American Veterans.
Surviving
are wife, Marian Roth Hagan, of Blairsville; son, Ricky Hagan of
Delaware;
daughter, Carl Sills, of Virginia Beach, VA; son, David Hagan, of
Virginia; and
daughter, Pattie Tucker, of Delaware; sisters: Dollie Weaver, Sue
Ratcliff,
both of Ellijay; and Clara Williams of Savannah, GA; brother, Phil
Hagan, of
Ellijay; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and other relatives
also
survive.
Funeral
services were held Thursday, December 18, 1997 at 2 p.m. from Faith
Baptist
Church with pastor James Brock and Pastor
Paul
Stevenson officiating. Special music was
presented by Gloria Johnson, Pastor Brock, and Sammy Nichols. North Georgia Honor Guard presented military
honors. Interment was in Schrougetown
Cemetery in Ellijay. In lieu of flowers,
if you wish memorials may be made to Faith Baptist Church Missionary
Fund or
the American Heart Association.

Georgia
Sullivan, age 92, of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away Monday, December
15,
1997.
Mrs.
Sullivan was born in Union County, Georgia, on July 17,
1905, a daughter of the late Thomas Gillespie and Cora Epps Gillespie. She was a homemaker and was the widow of the
late Elbert Sullivan, who passed away in 1958.
Mrs. Sullivan was a lifelong resident of this area, and was a
member of
Confidence Methodist Church.
Surviving
are daughter, Mary Dills, of Blairsville; son, Dormas Sullivan, of
Blairsville;
sister, Imogene Hutson, of Blairsville; two grandchildren, and two
great-grandchildren also survive.
Funeral
services were held Wednesday, December 17, 1997 at 11 a.m. from the
chapel of
Cochran Funeral Home in Blairsville with Reverend John Strickland
officiating. Special music was presented
by The Faith
Singers. The following gentlemen served
as pallbearers: Michael Sullivan,
Richard Sullivan, Bill Hutson, Tommy Elrod, Bob Jones, and Neal Moon. Serving as honorary escort to the family were
members of Union General Hospital Auxiliary.
Interment followed in Confidence Methodist Church Cemetery. If you wish, memorials may e made to

Mr.
Harold Lackey, age 79, of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away Tuesday,
December
23, 1997 in Lanier Park Hospital in Gainesville.
Mr. Lackey was born in Swain
County, North Carolina, on May 27, 1918, a son of the Late (sic)
William Samuel
lackey and Rachel Emmalee Ducker Lackey.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served during World War II. He had lived in this area for most of his
life and was a member and deacon of Mt. Olivet Baptist Church. Mr. Lackey was very active in Union County
Fire and Rescue Squad and Civil Defense.
Surviving
are wife, Shirley Hedgecock Lackey, of Blairsville; son and daughter in
law,
Donald and Doreen Lackey, of Blairsville; son and daughter in law,
Bruce and
Leona Lackey, of Blairsville; son, Gary lackey of Blairsville; daughter
and son
in law, Rita and Eugene Wright, of Rawlins, WY; daughter and son in
law, Emma
Lee and Edward Collum of Rydal, GA; daughter, Martha Sue Dockery, of
Blairsville; daughter ad son in law, N. Jolynn and Ray Ingram, of
Blairsville;
brothers: Hadley lackey of Sommerset, MASS and Thomas Lackey of
Deberry, FL;
sisters: Martha Gragg, of Swannannoa, NC; Clara McCurry of Gainesville,
FL;
Roslind Bowens, of Kings Mountain, NC;
Shirley Ann Rogers, of Florida; and Bonnie Stroughton, of
Atlanta; 16
grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild

survive.

services were held Friday, December 16, 1997 at 2 p.m. from Mt. Olivet
Baptist
Church with Rev. Fred Thomas and Rev. Claud Davenport officiating. Special music was presented by the Heavenly
Echoes, Rhonda Culberson, and Doris McGaha.
The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Hughes Chatham,
Wayne
Tanner, Johnny Carroll, Tommy Jones, Royce Killian, and Billy Poteete. Interment was in Mt. Olivet Baptist Church
Cemetery, with military honors presented by The North Georgia Honor
Guard.

Mrs.
Elizabeth Morter Hayes, age 83, of Blairsville, Georgia, formerly of
St.
Atkins, Wisconsin, North Palm Beach, Florida, and Marietta, Georgia,
Passed (sic)
away Tuesday, December 23, 1997. She was
born and raised in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, graduated from Northwestern
University
and the National Kindergarten Institute.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Mr. Royal F. Hayes,
and son,
Stephen Clyde Hayes.
Mrs.
Hayes taught school in Palmyra and Sheboygan,
Wisconsin, and lived in Ft. Atkinson, Wisconsin, until she
and her husband moved to North Palm Beach, FL.
In Ft.
Atkinson, she was past president of the Woman’s guild
of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, past president of the Ft. Atkinson’s
Woman’s
Club, Worth Matron of Martha Chapter No. 66 of the O.E.S. and Antioch
Temple
No. 113 Daughters of the Nile, past president of Fort Atkinson memorial
Hospital Auxiliary. She was a member of
the Rainbow Advisory Board and was awarded its Grand Cross of Colors. While in North Palm Beach, she was a past
president of the Jupiter Hospital Auxiliary and served on the board of
directors of Everglades Condominium as treasurer.
She is
survived by one brother, Dr. Howard Morter of
Blairsville, Georgia; and three nephews: Howard Guy Morter, Clyde Watts
Morter,
and David Andrew Morter; two grand nephews and one grand niece.
Funeral
services were held Tuesday, December 30, 1997 in Milwaukee, WI, with
interment
following in the Wisconsin Memorial Park.
