Mrs.
Hazel Mae Cothren, age 77, of Hoyle King Rd., Blairsville passed away on
Sunday, Jan. 28, 2001 in the Union General Hospital following an extended
illness. Mrs. Cothren was born on May 5,
1923 in Gastonia, NC., the daughter of the late Zebulon Henson and the late
Freda Mae Edwards Henson. She was a
member of the Moss Memorial Baptist Church of Hayesville. She was preceded in death by her husband,
Cord Devere Cothren in 1976.
Surviving
Mrs. Cothren are five daughters: Lula Bell Powell of Centrilia, WA., Anna Brown
and Florence Shelton, both of Blairsville, Alletta Thomas of Hiawassee and
Millie Arrowood of Blairsville; six sons: Arlin Cothren of Brinkley, AR., Ross
Cothren of Cetralia, WA., Wayne Cothren of Rayfein, VA., Claude Cothren of
Carnesville, GA., Jerry Cothren of Hiawassee, and Clifton Cothren of
Blairsville; five brothers, Howard Henson of Nebo, NC., Hoke and Junior Henson,
both of Peachtree, NC., Bobby Henson of Buford, and Carl Henson of Demorest;
twenty-six grandchildren, thirty great grandchildren, many other relatives and
friends also survive.
Funeral
services were held on Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2001 at 2 p.m. from the funeral home
chapel with the Rev. Aud Brown officiating.
Special music was presented by ken and Elaine Young. Giving the eulogy was Mrs. Cothrens grandson,
Lee Cothren. The following gentlemen
served as pallbearers: Paul Moss, Chris
Henson, Ted King, Wayne Abercrombie, Welchel Garrett and Billy Decker. Interment followed in the Moss memorial
Church Cemetery in Hayesville.

Mr.
Charles Arthur Werner, Sr. age 70, of Chigger Ridge Rd., Blairsville, passed
away on Friday, Feb. 2, 2001 in the Union General Hospital following an
extended illness. Mr. Werner was born on
Sept. 13 1930 in Boston, MA., the son of the late Peter Werner and the late
Sophie Newton Werner. Mr. Werner was a
member of the local VFW and a member of the Faith Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by a son, David
Werner in 1995 He was an army veteran of
the Korean War.
Surviving
Mr. Werner are his loving wife of twenty eight years, Kathie Earman Werner of
Blairsville; seven children: Gretchen Nix of W. Palm Beach, FL., Kirsten Werner
of W. Lafayette, IN., Heidi Reynolds of Lawrenceville, Jody Fouquart of W. Palm
Beach, Melanie Posch of W. Palm Beach, Darcie Werner of Blairsville, and
Charles A. Werner Jr. of Snellville; one sister: Ruth Couture of Rhode Island;
two brothers: Donald Werner of Rhode Island and Richard Werner of Chiefland,
FL.; ten grandchildren, one great grandchild, and many other relatives and
friends also survive.
Services
for Mr. Werner were held on Sunday Feb. 4 2001 at 2:30 from the Faith Baptist
Church with the Rev. Jim Brock officiating.
Special music was presented by George and Jacquie Shangle. In lieu of flowers if you wish, memorials may
be made to the Gideons International Bible Fund in Mr. Werner’s memory.

Mr. James
R. “Dick” King, age 74 of Blairsville passed away Tuesday, January 30 2001, at
Fannin Regional Hospital in Blue Ridge.
Mr. King
had lived in Blairsville since 1992 moving here from Pine Island, FL. He was a Mason and Shriner in Florida, a
former Boy Scout leader, a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and member of the
American Legion.
Survivors
include his wife, Joan King, of the home; two daughters, Linda Baker of
Waynesboro, PA, and Karen King of Lubbock, TX; a son, Danny Diehl of Altoona,
PA; an aunt, Edith Coffman of Beckley, WV; thirteen grandchildren and five
great-grandchildren.
A
memorial service was held Friday, February 2, 2001, at the chapel of Cochran
Funeral Home, Blairsville, GA, with Rev. Bill Howell officiating. Military honors were presented by North GA
Veterans.
In lieu
of flowers the family requested donations be made to the American Cancer Society.

Mr. John
Samuel Kirkland age 42, of Holly Hill Drive, Blairsville passed away on Monday,
Jan 29, 2001 in the Polk General Hospital in Cedartown following injuries
received in a work related accident. Mr.
Kirkland was born on Nov. 15, 1958 in Towns County, the son of Marshall
Kirkland and Juanita Hutchins Kirkland.
He was a lifelong resident of Union County and was a 1977 graduate of
Union Co. High School. Mr. Kirkland was
a member, and Sunday school teacher at Youngstown Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by a brother, Keith
Kirkland in 1997. He was employed by the
Floyd S. Pike Co.
Surviving
Mr. Kirkland are his loving wife, Lora Totherow Kirkland of Blairsville; two
children, Kayla Nichole and Drake Samuel Kirkland, both of Blairsville; father
and mother: Marshall (Sarge) and Juanita Kirkland, both of Blairsville; three
sisters: Gina Stuart, Sharon Kidd, and Missie Kirkland, all of
Blairsville. Many other relatives and
friends also survive.
Funeral
services were held on Thursday, Feb. 1, 2001 at 2 p.m. from the funeral home
chapel with the Rev. Jonathan Hood and Rev. Keith Brewer officiating. Special music was presented by Rev. Leon
Henderson. The following gentlemen
served as pallbearers: Ned Wilcoxin,
Howard Brys, Jeremy Henderson, Mike Potts, Eddie Queen and Jeff Potts. Interment followed in the Antioch Baptist
Cemetery.
