mrs. ruby panter

 

Mrs. Ruby Panter, age 85, of the Dial Community passed away Friday, April 6, at her home following an extended illness.  Born in Union County, GA, she was a daughter of the late Junis and Viva Wilson Walker.  She was a homemaker, wife of the late Grady A. Panter, and was a member of the Salem #1 ‘Sugar Hill’ Baptist Church.

She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Jack & Judy Panter of the Dial Community; three daughters & sons-in-law: Juanita & Larry VanZandt of the Dial Community, Evelyn & Lee Garland of Fair Oak, Ind., and Ruth & Jerry Green of Blue Ridge; one brother, Wayne Walker of Morganton; two sisters: Mae Brawley of Kent, OH, and Joyce Panter of Dahlonega, GA; 15 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild, and many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were conducted Sunday, April 8, at 2 p.m. from the Salem #1 (Sugar Hill) Baptist Church with the Rev. Tim Garrett officiating.  Interment followed in the church cemetery.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Phillip Garland, Tony Ledford, Stacy VanZandt, Jed Panter, Joe Panter, and Nathan Cox.  The following gentlemen served as an honorary escort: David Reynolds, Emmett Seabolt, and Hubert Bramlett.  Akins Funeral Home of Blue Ridge in charge of arrangements.

mrs. shirley alice rutledge maloney

 

Mrs. Shirley Maloney, age 60, of Blairsville, GA, passed away Thursday, April 5, 2001, in Southwest Regional Hospital in Fort Myers, FL.

Mrs. Maloney was born in Collier County, Florida, on Saturday, May 11, 1940, a daughter of the late William Jay Rutledge and Alice Youngman Rutledge.  Mrs. Maloney moved to Blairsville from Naples, FL, in 1993, when her husband accepted the pastorate of Blairsville Church of God.  She was a member of the Blairsville Church of God, and had been a bookkeeper in the banking industry.

Surviving are her husband of thirty-seven years, Rev. Kenneth Maloney, of Blairsville; a daughter, Constance Myers, of Boston, Massachusetts; a brother, David Weeks, of Naples, FL; a grandson, Christopher Myers also survives, along with many friends and other relatives. 

Funeral services were held Monday, April 9, 2001, at 11 a.m. from the Blairsville Church of God, with Rev. Michael Morrison officiating.  Special music was presented by Michelle Collins.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Stacy Stephens, Ed Everett, David Stiles, Matthew Stiles, Ronnie Davis, and her husband, Rev. Kenneth Maloney.  Interment was in Union Memory Gardens Cemetery in Blairsville.

MR. scotty david gibson

 

Mr. Scotty David Gibson, age 28, of Trinidad, TX, formerly of Blairsville, passed away on Tuesday, March 27, 2001 on Trinidad.  Mr. Gibson was born on October 31, 1962 in Murphy, NC the son of Clifford Robert Gibson and Helen Alene McClure Gibson.  He had lived most of his life in Union County and had attended the Union County School System.  Mr. Gibson was a member of the Stephens Lodge #414 of Young Harris and was a member of the Pine Log Baptist Church.  At the time of his death, he was manager and lead foreman of the Triple-n-Ranch in Trinidad, TX.

Surviving Mr. Gibson are one son, Joshua Gibson and two daughters, Kendra and Jessica Gibson, all of Young Harris; father, Clifford Gibson of Young Harris and mother, Helen Gibson of Murphy, NC; two brothers, Paul Gibson and Doug Gibson, both of Young Harris, Grandmother, Vara Lee Gibson of Young Harris; one grandchild, Jaden Schane, many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, April 5, 2001 at 2 pm from the Pine Log Baptist Church with the Rev. Jimmy Rogers officiating.  Special music was presented by Leigh Jones and Teresa Reece.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Larry Shook, Robby Gibson, Bryan McClure, Ed McClure, Stanley Teems and Terry Akery.  Conducting the graveside serves were the Stephens Lodge #414 F&AM.  Interment followed in the church cemetery.

mrs. edith milnes matthes

 

Mrs. Edith Milnes Matthes, age 94, of Blairsville, GA passed away Saturday, March 31, 2001 in the Chatuge Regional Hospital, Hiawassee, GA.  Mrs. Matthes was born in Blue Anchor, NJ, and was a homemaker.  She had recently moved to this area.  She was a member of Mulberry United Methodist Church, Mulberry, FL.

Survivors include her daughter, Barbara Alderman of Blairsville; sons, Carl H. Matthes of Lakeland, FL and Richard W. Matthes of Whittier, NC.

Memorial services and interment were held in Florida.

mrs. hazel eathel townson

 

Mrs. Hazel Eathel Townson, age 90, of Union County passed away Tuesday, April 3, 2001, in the Murphy Medical Nursing Home following an extended illness.  Mrs. Townson was born in Cherokee County, NC, June 10, 1910, a daughter of Burt and Callie Day Ledford, and had lived in this area all of her life.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer Elisha Townson, and two sons, L.J. and Obera.  She was a homemaker and a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church.

Surviving are two sons, Troy Lake Townson and William Ray Townson, both of Union County, and seven grandchildren Dwayne Townson, Michael Townson, Keith Townson, Timothy Townson, Debra Townson, Ricky Townson and Donna Townson.

Funeral services were held at 2 pm, Thursday, April 5, from the chapel of Cochran Funeral Home in Blairsville with Rev. Clifton Patterson and Rev. Avery Beaver officiating.  Music was provided by Martha Davenport.

Interment was in the Mt. Zion Baptist Church Cemetery with Dwayne Townson, Michael Townson, Keith Townson, Timothy Townson, Johnny cook and Tom Berry serving as pallbearers.

MR. richard b. hebble

 

Mr. Richard B. Hebble, Jr., age 73, of Darby Lane, Blairsville, passed away on Thursday morning April 5, 2001 at his home following an extended illness.  Mr. Hebble was born on June 6, 1927 in Palmetto, FL, the son of the late Richard B. Hebble Sr. and the late Ella Lowry Hebble.  He was a retired Postmaster with the Tampa Post Office where he worked for over thirty eight years.  He was a former member of Lake Magdane First United Methodist Church in Tampa.  Mr. Hebble was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Blairsville,  He was also a WWII Veteran in the U.S. Army.

Surviving Mr. Hebble are his loving wife, Martha (Pennie) Reid Hebble of Blairsville; one daughter and son-in-law Mary Joreka and Lonny Meewes of Winter Springs, FL; one sister and brother-in-law, Mary Louise and Paul Bearss of Tamps, FL one grandchild, Jordan Ashly Meewes of Tampa, many other relatives and friends also survive.

Services for Mr. Hebble were held on Saturday, April 7, 2001 at 2 pm from the First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Eddie Herring officiating.  Special music was presented by Jeff Bauman.  Serving as Honorary Pallbearers were: Ronald Taylor, Ty Cobb, Joe Roach, Less Myers, Paul Colditz, Alex Divita, Jim Thompson, Jay Groves, Charles Padgett, Tommy Rogers, Charles Rossman and Buddy Whitten.  Interment will follow in the Lake Carroll Cemetery in Tampa.

dr. marlyne adams jacobs

 

Dr. Marlyne Adams Jacobs passed away in Montgomery, AL on Thursday, March 8, 2001, following an extended illness.  Dr. Jacobs was born in Union County and had graduated Union Co. High school in the fifties.  She was the daughter of the late Homer Ellis and the late Pauline Chapman Ellis.  She was preceded in death by two sisters and one brother and also her beloved son, Brian Adams and his father, Larry Adams.

Surviving Dr. Jacobs are her loving husband, Linn Jacobs of Montgomery, AL, five sisters: Dorothy Parris of Dahlonega, GA, Annette Odom of Kingston, GA, Shirley Kalb of Marietta, GA, Sue Page of Stockbridge, GA, and Maurine Ellis; three brothers: James Ellis of Linton, IN, Garnett Ellis of Forest Park, GA, and Ronnie Ellis of Barnesville, GA; aunt, Selma Chapman of Acworth; niece, Dell Balew of IN;  many other relatives and friends also survive.

Graveside services will be held on Saturday, April 14, 2001 from the Thomas Chapel Cemetery in Blairsville with the Rev. page officiating.  In lieu of flowers if you wish, the family requests that memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society in Dr. Jacobs memory.

mrs. bonnie alexander phillips

 

Mrs. Bonnie Alexander Phillips, age 97, of the Old Blue Ridge Hwy., Blairsville passed away on Friday, April 6, 2001 in the Union General Hospital following an extended illness.  Mrs. Phillips was born on Jan. 22, 1904 in Towns County, the daughter of the late William Alexander and the late Mae Norton Alexander.  She was a member of the Old Brasstown Baptist Church in Young Harris.  Mrs. Phillips was preceded in death by her husband, Bob Phillips; one daughter-in-law, Ella Phillips; three sisters, Georgia Hall, Clairene Alexander, and Irene Martin all of Young Harris.

Surviving Mrs. Phillips are four sons and three daughters-in-law, Jack Phillips of Blairsville, Don and Betty Phillips of Dalton, Pat and Susie Phillips of Blairsville, and Troy and Ella Phillips of Dalton, GA; one sister, Willie Mae Puett of Hiawassee; eight grandchildren, Donny, Ivan, Robby, and Drew Phillips, Patty Aukerman, Kathy Stubblefield, Sheila Mullins, Shelly Hopkins and Alen Franks; fourteen great grandchildren and many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, April 8, 2001 at 2 p.m. from the Old Brasstown Baptist Church with the Rev. Jimmy Rogers and Rev. Jerry Helton officiating.  Special music was presented by the Kelly Trio.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Robby, Drew and Ivan Phillips, Donny Phillips Jr., Jon Stubblefield, Woddy Mullins and Greg Hopkins.  Serving as honorary pallbearers were Alen Franks, Joe Reynolds, Chester Puett, W. R. Hall and Rev. Bill Howell.  Interment followed in the church cemetery.

MR. michael clifton beavers

 

Mr. Michael Clifton Beavers, age 49, of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away unexpectedly Friday, April 6, 2001 in Union County, Georgia.

Mr. Beavers was born Tuesday, April 24, 1951 in Cherokee County, North Carolina, a son of the late Claud E. Ralph Beavers and Minnie Greene Beavers.  He was an automobile mechanic, and was a member of Notla Baptist Church.

Surviving are his fiancé, Jill Brown, of Blairsville; two sons, Stacy Beavers of Blairsville and Trevor Beavers of Jasper, Georgia; three sisters, Pearl Beavers of Murphy, North Carolina, Juanita Murphy of Murphy, North Carolina and Veda Kay May, also of Murphy; four brothers, Glenn Beavers, Jerald Beavers and Lloyd Beavers, all of Murphy and Roger “Doc” Beavers of Blairsville;   friends and other relatives also survive.

Funeral services were held Monday, April 9, 2001 at 2 pm from Notla Baptist Church with Rev. Hoyt Brown officiating.  Special music was presented by The Wilson Family.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Jeff Haley, Bryce Vial, Bob May, Randy Fowler, Gene Heard, and Dennis McDowell.  Interment was in the church cemetery.
