MR. jonathan neil burrell

 

Mr. Jonathan Neil Burrell, age 16, of Garrett Road, Blairsville, passed away on early Saturday morning, April 28, 2001 from injuries received in an automobile accident.  Jonathan was born on December 26, 1984 in Union County, the son of Terry Burrell and Kelly Kiernan Burrell.  He was a native and lifelong resident of Union County.  He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Neil Burrell.  He was attending Union County High School and was in the tenth grade.  Jonathan was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church.

Surviving Jonathan are his parents, Terry and Kelly Burrell of Blairsville; two sisters, Courtney and Hollie Burrell of Blairsville; maternal grandparents, John and Mary Kiernan of Blairsville; paternal grandmother, Mattie Mae Burrell of Blairsville; many aunts, uncles, cousins, and many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Monday, April 30, 2001 from the funeral home chapel with Rev. Tommy Seay and Father Selva Roj., B. officiating.  Special music was presented by Elizabeth Plott.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Marshall Gibson, Scott Smith, Scott Thomas, Kevin Terry, Jeff Beck, and Christopher Lovell.  Interment followed in the Union Memory Gardens Cemetery.

mrs. rachel ballew spivia

 

Mrs. Rachael Ballew Spivia, age 76, of Blairsville, GA. passed away Tuesday, April 24, 2001, at her home.

She was a native of Union County, GA. having been born on Tuesday, March 3, 1925.  She was the daughter of the late Joe Ballew and Jane West Ballew.  She was a homemaker and a life-long resident of this area.  Mrs. Spivia was a member of Union Baptist Church.

She is survived by her husband, Walter Spivia, of the home; two sons, Jimmy and Michael Spivia, both of Blairsville; two sisters: Edith Sullivan of Clermont, GA. and Genelle Sullivan of Blairsville; five grandchildren: Teresa Garrett of Blairsville; Tracey Goodall, of Mineral Bluff, GA. Tori Potts, of Blairsville, Heather Spivia, of Hiawassee, and Shelley Hughes, of Blairsville; six great grandchildren also survive, along with many friends and other relatives.

Funeral services were held Thursday, April 26, 2001, at 4 p.m., from Union Baptist Church, with Rev. Benny Nix officiating.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Ralph Dyer, Raymond Dyer, Royce Dyer, Danny Sullivan, Earl Sullivan, and Eddie Spiva.  Interment was in the church cemetery.

mrs. annie erwin burgess

 

Mrs. Annie Erwin Burgess, age 86, of Kytle St., Cleveland, GA, formerly of Blairsville passed away on Monday evening at her home following an extended illness.  Mrs. Burgess was born on September 10, 1914 in Union County, the daughter of the late Benjamin Erwin and the late Murphy Jones Erwin.  She and her husband owned and operated The Princess Grill in Cleveland for several years.  She was preceded in death by three brothers: Paul, Houston and John Erwin; four sisters: Mattie Rich, Ellen Nix, Ruth Pendland and Gladys Erwin.  Mrs. Burgess was a good mother and a loving wife.  She was of the Methodist Faith.

Surviving Mrs. Burgess are her loving husband of sixty two years, Floyd Preston Burgess of Cleveland; one daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Matt Major of Cleveland; many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Thursday at 2 p.m. from the Barrett Funeral Home Chapel in Cleveland with the Rev. Chris Anderson and Rev. Aubrey McIntire officiating.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Billy Helton, Phil Abernathy, Benny Erwin, Bill Crew, Ronnie Smith, and Newt Miller.  Interment followed in the Mountain View Memorial Cemetery.

mrs. mary iona carithers

 

Mrs. Mary Iona Carithers, age 89, of Union County Nursing Home in Blairsville, GA, passed away Thursday, April 26, 2001.

Mrs. Carithers was a native of Spencer County, Indiana, and was born there on Wednesday, August 9, 1911, a daughter of the late William and Della Eberhardt.  She was a homemaker and moved to the Blairsville area in 1996, coming here from Ocala, FL.  She was of the Methodist faith.  Mrs. Carithers was preceded in death by her husband, Theodore, in 1984.

Mrs. Carithers is survived by several nieces and nephews, and locally, a niece, Pearl Carithers, of Blairsville.

Graveside services were held Saturday, April 28, 2001, at 11 a.m. from Glen haven Memorial Park Cemetery in Winter Park, FL.

mr. jacque ross devereaux, sr.

 

Mr. Jacque Ross Devereaux, Sr., age 55, of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away Monday, April 23, 2001 in Union County, Georgia, following an extended illness.

Jacque was born in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania on Wednesday, December 12, 1945, a son of Melissa Goehring Devereaux and the late Howard Ross Devereaux.  He had been living this area since 1979, moving here from Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.  Mr. Devereaux attended First United Methodist Church of Union County and was a well-known local businessman.  He had been very active in Union County Recreation Department, in various activities.  Jacque was a member of the PTA, and was a leader in the community.

He is survived by his wife, Sharon Elizabeth Devereaux, of Blairsville; his mother, Melissa Goehring Devereaux of Blairsville; a son, Jacque Ross Devereaux, Jr. of Blairsville; daughter and son-in-law, Melissa Devereaux Whitehead and Jeff Rex Whitehead of Salt Lack City, Utah; daughter, Heather Lynn Devereaux of Blairsville; and daughter Dana Renee’ Devereaux, also of Blairsville; a brother, Rev. Jan Devereaux, of Hartwell, Georgia; and a granddaughter, Tessa Elizabeth Whitehead of Salt Lake City.  Many friends and many other relatives also survive.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, April 26, 2001 at 6 pm from First United Methodist Church of Union County with Rev. Jan Devereaux, Rev. Johnny Jenkins and Rev. David Goehring officiating.  Specially selected music was presented by Mr. Jeff Bauman.  The following ladies served as pallbearers: Jana Tallent Hemphill, Megan Collins, Jennifer Dillinger Jones, Pam King, Jamie Rivkin Chastain, Pam Turner, Haley Colwell, Joanna Harkins, Brandy Dyer Zipperer, Christy Queen, and Erica Nelson.  Interment was in Union Memory Gardens Cemetery in Blairsville.
