VERDIE DUCKWORTH ENSLELY

 

Verdie Duckworth Ensley, 92, departed this life July 10, 2001 in the Union County nursing Home, Blairsville, Georgia following an extended illness.

Born in the Choestoe District of Union County, Georgia on July 28, 1908, Verdie was the youngest child of John Frances (Jack) and Laura Jane Noblet Duckworth.  She lived most of her life in Union County and Young Harris.  She was a devout Christian whose main purpose in life was the well-being of her children.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Franklin Ensley, and seven siblings:  Frank Duckworth, Vester Duckworth, W.H. (Henry) Duckworth, Nell Duckworth Wimpy, J. Lon Duckworth, Pearl Duckworth Dyer, and Bonnie Duckworth Snow (Spool).

She is survived by seven offspring:  James (Jim) Ensley of Young Harris, Willa bel (Fritz) Ensley Caylor of Blairsville, Mildred (Millie) Ensley Haigler of Hiawassee, Robert (Bob) Ensley of Blairsville, Sam Ensley of Blairsville, Sara Ensley Posin of Las Vegas, Nevada, and Franklin (Frank) Ensley, Jr. of Hiawassee.  Also surviving are twenty-three grandchildren as well as many great and great-great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 11 am on July 12, 2001 at Old Union Church in Young Harris, Georgia with the Reverend Jimmy Rogers officiating.  Eulogies were delivered by daughter Sara Ensley Posin and grandson Joseph Turner.  Prayer was by the Reverend Patty Ryles Clay.  Pallbearers were A. C. (Ancel) Duckworth, W.H. (Bill) Duckworth, Herbert Dyer, John Snow, Sr., John Snow, Jr., and Danny Brown.  Special music was provided by Ken and Elaine Young.  Interment was in Union memory Gardens, Blairsville, Georgia with Banister Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

FRED BUNYAN ROBERTS

 

Fred Bunyan Roberts, age 74, of Browning Road, Villa Rica, GA, formerly of Murphy, NC died Thursday, July 12, 2001 at Tanner medical Center in Villa Rica, GA.

He was a native of Cherokee County, NC and was a retired printer.  He was a U.S. Navy Veteran of World War II where he served on the USS Yorktown.  He was a member of Grape Creek Baptist Church in Murphy, NC and a member of the Masonic Lodge in Macon, GA.  Fred was a son of the late Paul and Janie Burgess Roberts and was preceded in death by two brothers, Verlon Roberts and Hubert Roberts.

He is survived by his wife, Mildred Bice Roberts; two sons, Larry Roberts and his wife, Barbara Roberts of Carrollton, GA and Gary Roberts of Wedowee, Alabama; one brother, Charles Roberts of Ellijay, GA; six sisters, Grace Styles of Hiawassee, GA, Lee Ellen Mayton of Lithonia, GA, Willie Mae Garrett of Oxford, GA, Becky Freeman of Martinez, GA. Betty Jean Kade of Ellijay, GA. and Mary Jo Davis of Smyrna, GA; seven grandchildren; two great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held at 3 pm, Saturday, July 14, 2001 at the Grape Creek Baptist Church in Murphy, NC.  The Rev. Bob Gardner officiated.  Burial was in the Grape Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.  Pallbearers were Grady Stiles, Bill Stiles, and Terry Stiles.

Townson Rose Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. BILL MCCARTER

 

Mr. Bill McCarter, age 85, of Morganton and Hiawassee, GA passed away Wednesday, July 11, 2001 in the Saint Joseph’s Hospital in Atlanta, GA.

Mr. McCarter was born June 16, 1916 in Sevier Co., TN, a son of the late James Newt and Mary (Huskey) McCarter.  He was a native of Gatlinburg, TN and grew up in Hiawassee.  He lived and worked in Akron, OH and after retiring moved back to Morganton and Hiawassee, GA.  He was a member of Star Creek Baptist Church and Ocoee Masonic Lodge #201 F&AM.  He was preceded in death by his first wife, Vella Eller McCarter in 1990.

Survivors include:  his wife, Montree D. McCarter of the home; daughter, Beechie McCarter Curbow of Atlanta, GA; step-daughter, Nyoka Rogers of Hiawassee, GA; step-son, Terry Stroud of Hiawassee, GA; grandchildren, Jay Curbow and Gregory Curbow both of Morganton, GA and Genevieve Curbow of Atlanta, GA; four great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Saturday, July 14, 2001 at 2 p.m. from the Chapel of Cochran Funeral Home with Rev. Harold Ledford officiating.  Pallbearers were:  Tom Sprinkles, Terry Stroud, Johnny Rogers, Truett Eller, Michael Haverty and Kenny Stroud.  Honorary pallbearers were:  Orvin Lance, Ricky Rogers and Randy Rogers.  Interment was in Chastain Memorial Park.

Mrs. RUTH FEOLE BRIDGMAN

 

Mrs. Ruth Bridgman, age 87, of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away Saturday, July 14, 2001 in Union County Nursing Home in Blairsville.

Mrs. Bridgman was born in West Virginia, on Wednesday, December 3, 1913, a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Peter VanMeter.  She was a homemaker and moved to Blairsville in 1974, from Miami.  Mrs. Bridgman was of the Jehovah’s Witness faith, attending the Blairsville Kingdom Hall.  She had been preceded in death by her husband, the late Harry Bridgman, who passed way in 1993.

Surviving are daughter and son-in-law, Catherine and George Campbell of Cleveland, Ohio; son and daughter-in-law, David, Sr. and Marjorie Walker of Blairsville; and step-son and his wife, Gene and Gail Bridgman, of Blue Ridge, Georgia; eleven grandchildren, twenty-one great grandchildren; other relatives and friends also survive.

Memorial services are scheduled for Sunday, July 22, 2001 at 2:30 pm from Blairsville Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witness, located on Hwy 29 South and Paradise Road in Blairsville.

Mrs. GENEVA JANE JOHNSON

 

Mrs. Geneva J. Johnson, age 74, of Hiawassee, GA passed away Tuesday, July 10, 2001.  Mrs. Johnson was born in Towns County, the daughter of the late Otis W. and Dollie Rogers Martin.  In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her brother; Henry Martin and one sister:  Milam Martin Bussell.  Surviving are her husband:  Mr. Ervin Johnson of the home; 2 sons:  Mr. Larry Johnson of Forest Park, GA and Mr. Rex Johnson of Hiawassee, GA; 2 sisters:  Mrs. Lou Ellen Hamilton and Mrs. Juanita McKinney, both of Hiawassee, GA; 4 grandchildren; 2 step-grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.  Funeral Services were held on Thursday, July 12, 2001 at 2 p.m. from the Lower Hightower Baptist Church with the Rev. George Fortner and the Rev. Danny Burch officiating.  Interment was in the Lower Hightower Cemetery.  Pallbearers were:  Henry Doster, Glen Walters, L. G. Hamilton, Jay Titshaw, Stanley McKinney, and Douglas Johnson.  Banister Funeral Home, Inc. of Hiawassee, GA in charge of arrangements.
