Mrs. JOAN BLANKENSHIP SITES

 

Mrs. Joan Blankenship Sites, age 72, of Blairsville, passed away Thursday, July 17, 2003 at the Kennestone Hospital in Marietta, GA.

Mrs. Sites was born February 20, 1931, in Whitley Co., KY, a daughter of Ellie Oscar and Bertha Lou Carr Blankenship.  She lived in this area since 1986, moving here from Ft. Lauderdale, FL.  Mrs. Sites was a member of the Blairsville Church of God and of the Gideons Auxiliary.

Survivors include her husband, Bob Sites, of the home; three daughters and son-on-laws, Tyra and Tom Brown of Roswell, GA, Jo Jeana and Ed Smith of Woodstock, GA, and Nancy and Kirk Cunningham of Springdale, AK; sister and brother-in-law, June and Wayne Peele of LaBelle, FL; eight grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren also survive.

Funeral services were held Sunday, July 20, 2003 at 4 p.m. at the Chapel of Cochran Funeral Home with pastor Mike Morrison and Rev. James Hughes officiating.  Interment was in the Resthaven Cemetery, Corbin, KY.

In lieu of flowers the family request that memorials be made to either the Leukemia Society of the American Caner Society.

COY R.B. LOFTIS

 

            Coy R.B. Loftis, age 82, of Gnatty Road, Hayesville, NC died Wednesday, July 16, 2003 at his home.

            A native of Swain County, NC, he was a World War II, U.S. Army Veteran.  He served in the Northern Solomons and Luzon Campaigns and was awarded the Asiatic Pacific Theater Medal, the Philippine Liberation Ribbon, the Victory Medal and he received the Purple Heart.  He was a member of the Hayesville V.F.W. Post #6812 and attended the Saved By Grace Full Gospel Church in Hayesville, NC.  He was a retired construction worker.

            Mr. Loftis was a son of the late Roscoe and Hattie Woody Loftis and was preceded in death by two sons, Dillard Loftis and Wade Loftis; and three brothers, Vernon Loftis, Theodore Loftis and Newman Woody.

            He is survived by his wife, Thelma Bradley Loftis; two sons, Willard Loftis and Allen Loftis both of Hayesville, NC; four daughters, Clayta Forrester and Vickie Coker both of Hayesville, NC, Eunata Burrell of Hiawassee, GA and Anita Sosebee of Young Harris, GA; one brother, Ray Loftis of Clover, SC; four sisters, Gertrude Tippett of Bryson City, NC, Beulah Jones and Helen Jones both of Whittier, NC and Naoma Littleton of Clarkesville, GA; thirteen grandchildren; one step-grandson; and fifteen great-grandchildren.

            Funeral services were held Saturday, July 19, 2003 at 2 p.m. at the Townson Rose, Frank Rose, St. Memorial Chapel in Hayesville, NC.  The Rev. Lloyd Ledford, Rev. Eugene Freeman and Rev. Ricky Burrell officiating.  Burial was in the Shooting Creek Memorial Gardens in Hayesville, NC with Military graveside rites conducted by Veterans Organization:  V.F.W. Post #10222, Joe Miller Elkin American Legion Post #96, D.A.V. Chapter #73 and Hayesville V.F.W. #6812.  Grandsons served as pallbearers:  Roger Maney, Christ Coker, Brandon Coker, Brian Forrester, Shannon Burrell and Craig Sosebee.  Honorary pallbearers were Kenneth Reynolds and Calvin Stroud.

            In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Hospice, in Memory of Mr. Coy R.B. Loftis, C/O Good Shepherd Home Health and Hospice Agency, Inc., P.O. Box 465, Hayesville, NC 28904

Mr. CANSADIA GUNTER FRANKLIN

 

            Mrs. Cansadia Gunter Franklin, age 96 of Old River Road, Blairsville passed away on Thursday, July 17,2003 in the Union General Hospital following a brief illness.

            Mrs. Franklin was born on June 10, 1907 in Madison Co., TN, the daughter of the late James David Gunter and the late Mollie Ballew gaunter.  She was preceded in death by two sons, Edders Franklin in 1978, James David Franklin in 1995 and by her husband, Nippie Franklin in 1975.  Mrs. Franklin was of the Baptist Faith.

            Surviving Mrs. Franklin are two sons and one daughter-in-law, Elmer Franklin of Blairsville, Ottis and Ann Franklin of Blairsville, twelve grandchildren, Samantha Franklin, Tamara Stanley, David Franklin, Angie Hunter, Junior Franklin, Steve Franklin, Keith Franklin, Mary Ann Franklin, Lisa Godowns, Sonja Franklin, Greg Adams and Scott Adams, sixteen great grandchildren, five great-great grandchildren, many other relatives and friends also survive.

            Funeral services were held on Saturday, July 19, 2003 at 2 p.m. from the Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Ray Potts officiating.  Special music was presented by Joanne and Buckey Kelley.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers, David, Keith and Steve Franklin, Ken Denning, Kevin Russell, Tim Rich and Brandon Anderson.  Interment followed in the Snowhill Baptist Church Cemetery.

GUY HUGH PUETT

 

            Mr. Guy Hugh Puett, age 85, of Hiawassee, GA passed away Thursday, July 17, 2003 in Chatuge Regional Nursing Home.

            Mr. Puett was born July 18, 1017 in Towns County, a son of the late John Arthur and Mary Lea (McGaha) Puett.  He was a member of Old Brasstown Baptist Church.  Mr. Puett was a WWII U.S. Army Veteran and served in the European Theatre.  He participated in the first wave of the D-Day invasion of Normandy and was present for the Liberation of Paris.  He was active in Towns County Lions Club and Towns County Hospital Authority.  Mr. Puett was Principal of Young Harris Elementary and Brasstown Elementary Schools from 1937 to 1977.

            Survivors include his wife, Kathryn McAfee Puett of Hiawassee; daughter and son-in-law, Mary Jacqueline (Jackie) and Charles R. (Dick) Higdon of Andrews, NC; sister, Nora Lea Westmoreland of Hiawassee; two grandchildren, John R. Higdon and Jim Higdon both of Andrews, NC; two great-grandchildren, Brady Higdon and Alex Higdon, also of Andrews, NC.

            Funeral services were held, Sunday, July 20, 2003 at 2:00 PM at Old Brasstown Baptist Church with Rev. Jimmy Rogers and Rev. Ricky Rogers officiating.  Music was provided by a group of former students.  Pallbearers were Terry Roberts, Marty Roberts, Derek Moody, Brent Moody, Rex Norton and Roger Puett.  Honorary Pallbearers were Ernie Gibson, Billy Nelson, Donald Sampson, J.C. Nelson, Earl Roberts, Roy Townsend, George McClure and Chester McClure.  Interment was in the Church Cemetery.

CORA BOWLING DENNEY

 

            Mrs. Cora Bowling Denney, age 81 of Blairsville, passed away on Thursday, July 17, 2003 in Union General Hospital, following an extended illness.

            Mrs. Denney was born on Saturday, September 8, 1921.  Mrs. Denney was a lifelong resident of Blairsville and was a member of First Baptist Church of Blairsville.  Mrs. Denney was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas Oscar and Ida Hullander Bowling.

            Surviving are her spouse, B. Frank Denney; two sons, Frank Denney, Jr. of Marietta, GA and Ronald Lee Denney, of Kennesaw, GA; a daughter, Shelby Deitz of Grovetown, GA; a brother, Frank Bowling of Stockton, GA; nine grandchildren, nine great grandchildren and many other relatives and friends also survive.

            Funeral services were held on Friday, July 18, 2003 at 11:00 AM in the chapel of Cochran Funeral Home with Rev. Danny Parris and Rev. Hill Honaker officiating.  Special music was provided by the Kelleys.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers:  Todd Denney, Scott Deitz, Chris Denney, John Parker, Kevin Coleman and Tim Carter.  Burial was in Union Memory Gardens Cemetery in Blairsville.

            Cochran Funeral Home of Blairsville was entrusted by the family for the arrangements.

DORIS E. “BETTY” MURRAY

 

            Mrs. Doris E. “Betty” Murray, age 73, of Sebring, Fl and Hiawassee, GA passed away Wednesday, July 16, 2003 in lake Placid, Fl.

            Mrs. Murray was born October 2, 1929, in Dale County, Alabama.  A daughter of the late James B. and Lera (Hall) Windham.  She moved to Hiawassee in 1982 from Temple Terrace, Fl.  Mrs. Murray was a member of McConnell Memorial Baptist Church, a member of the Upper Hightower Fire Department Auxiliary.  She had worked at Towns County Hospital for several years.  Mrs. Murray was preceded in death by her husband, Robert A. Fox in 1989.

            Survivors are her husband, Paul Murray of Sebring, Fl; children, Mary Ellen Warner of North Wilkesboro, NC, Barbara Elaine Post of Kansas City, KS and Steven Wayne Fox of Leavenworth, KS; step-children, Addie Ruth Moore of Kenly, NC, Louise Taylor of New London, CT, Paul Murray, Jr. and Bill Murray, both of Sebring, Fl; sisters, Jewel Daggett of Ft. Pierce, Fl, Sybil Wirick of Hiawassee, GA, Dorothy Hannah of Lake Placid, Fl, Carolyn Browning of Fruitland Park, Fl, Pat Green of Umatilla, Fl, Eleanor Bigson of Mt. Dora, Fl, JoAnn Miller of Hiawassee, GA, Muriel Jones and Jean Dempsey, both of Umatilla, Fl; brothers, Edward Windham of Leesville, LA and J.L. Windham of Leesburg, Fl; fourteen grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews.

            Funeral services were held Monday, July 21, 2003 at 10:00 am at McConnell Memorial Baptist Church with Dr. Rudy Patton officiating.  Music was by Connie Lake.  Pallbearers were Dennis Miles, Jimmy Kimsey, Jerry Nichols, Roy Cole, Doug Nicholson and Roy Robertson.  Interment was in Osborn Cemetery.

RAYMOND WILLIAM CALKINS

 

            Mr. Raymond William Calkins, age 89, of Fairview Church Road, Blairsville, passed away on Friday, July 18, 2003 at his home following an extended illness.

            Mr. Calkins was born on November 28, 1913 in N. Tonawanda, NY., the son of the late John and Nettie Smith Calkins.  Mr. Calkins had retired from Bell Aircraft in Niagra Falls, NY., with over forty one years of service.  He was a member of the Men’s Christian Fellowship, Past Chairman of the Board of Deacons, a member of the Elks Club in Bellview, Fl., and the Odd Fellows in Lockpoint, NY.  Mr. Calkins was a member of the First Christian Church of Ocala, Fl.

            He was preceded in death by his wife, Norma Smith Calkins in 1994 and by two grandsons, David Blue in 1978 and Steven Calkins in 2001.

            Survivors are one daughter, Joanne Stevens of Young Harris; one son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Barbara Calkins of N. Tonawanda, NY; six grandchildren, Sandy Patterson, Cheryl Fisher, David Kennedy, Candy Kennedy, Carol Calkins and Rick Blue; eleven great-grandchildren.  Many other relatives and friends also survive.

            Funeral services were held on Wednesday, July 23, 2003 at 11:00 am from the Wattengel Funeral Home Chapel in Tonawanda, NY., with the Rev. Jerry McClone officiating.  Interment followed in the elm Lawn Cemetery in Kenmore, NY.

            Mountain View Funeral Home of Blairsville was in charge of local arrangements.

RICCARDO G. BUCCA

 

            Mr. Riccardo G. Bucca, age 49, of Hiawassee, GA passed away Thursday, July 17, 2003 following an extended illness.  Mr. Bucca was born in Pestoria, Italy, the son of the late Joseph and Theiss Bucca.  He was a Chef by profession.

            Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Patti Bucca, of the home; step-daughter, Gina Richardson of North Adams, Massachusetts; step-son, Timothy Richardson of Bradenton, Fla; brother, Anthony Bucca of Saratoga Springs, NY and three grandchildren.

            Memorial services were held Saturday, July 19, 2003 at 2:00 PM from the Chapel of the Banister Funeral Home.  The Rev. Harold Ledford officiated.  Banister Funeral Home of Hiawassee was in charge of arrangements.

MR. HULON GUYTON

 

Mr. Hulon Guyton, age 66, of Blairsville, Georgia, formerly of Bonita Springs, Florida, passed away Monday, July 14, 2003 in Union General Hospital in Blairsville.

            Mr. Guyton was born Monday, May 31, 1937, in Bladen, North Carolina, a son of the late Bennie Guyton and Sadie Tait Guyton.  Mr. Guyton had been a business owner of a underground utilities company.

            Surviving are his wife, Carole Guyton, of Blairsville; two children:  Ricky Hulon Guyton, of Forty Myers, Florida and Teresa Mace, of Naples, Florida; three step-children:  Walter Williams, of Dickson, Tennessee, David Williams, of Key Largo, Florida, and Christy Davidson, of Bonita Springs, Florida; three sisters:  Margie Bryan, of Bonifay, Florida, and Margaret Baxley, and Peggy Burney, both of Bladenboro, North Carolina; two brothers:  Hubert Guyton, of Charlotte, North Carolina, and Charles Guyton, of Bladenboro, North Carolina; two grandchildren, and five step-grandchildren also survive.

            No memorial services are planned at this time.
