MR. roger lee helton

 

Mr. Roger Lee Helton, age 52, of Old River Road, Blairsville, passed away on Wednesday, July 19, 2000 following a brief illness.  Mr. Helton was born on December 24, 1947 in Union County, the son of the late Newman Helton and the late Mamie Inez Shepherd Helton.  He was a lifelong resident of Union County and was a member of The Bunkerhill Baptist Church.

Surviving Mr. Helton are his loving wife of twenty-two years, Patricia Diane Gribble Helton, of Blairsville, one sister, Lois Totherow of Blairsville, one brother and sister in law, Larry and Agnes Helton of Ellijay, many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, July 22, 2000 at 2 p.m. from the Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Joe Dan Wilkens and Rev. Lonnie Wright officiating.  Special music was presented by Hubert and Betty Legg.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers were:  Donald Bell, David Payne, Larry Lunsford, Richard Crowell, Johnny Shepherd and Kenneth Bryson.  Interment followed in the Mt. Pleasant Church Cemetery.

MR. ELWYN RAY SLOCUM

 

Mr. Elwyn Ray Slocum, age 68, of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away Tuesday, July 18, 2000.

Mr. Slocum was born in Ulster County, New York, on Sunday, November 13, 1932, a son of the late Sidney Slocum and Agnes Smith Slocum.  He was a veteran of the U.s. Army, Airborne Division and served during the Korean War.  Mr. Slocum had lived in the Blairsville area for five years, moving here from homestead, Florida.  He was of the Catholic faith.  Mr. Slocum was a member of the National Rifle Association, and a member of the Telephone Pioneers.  He was a retired telephone company foreman.

Survivors include his wife, Donna Valentine Slocum, of Blairsville; a son, Raymond John Slocum, of Ft. Pierce, FL; daughter, Kathleen Leonard, of Blairsville; son, Michael Cournoyer of Ft. Lauderdale, FL; two brothers, Thomas Pymm of Homestead, Florida and James Pymm of Orlando; six grandchildren and two great grandchildren also survive.

Memorial services will be held at a later date.

MR. KENNETH PATERSON

 

Mr. Kenneth Lee Paterson, age 75, of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away Wednesday, July 19, 2000 in Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville.

Mr. Paterson was born in Polk County, Florida, on Monday, January 19, 1925, a son of the late Robert George Paterson and Laura Belle Fifcher Paterson.  He was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II, and was a paratrooper in the European Theatre.  Mr. Paterson was a University of Florida graduate, earning a bachelor of science degree in Animal Husbandry.  In Winter Garden, Florida, he owned and operated a dairy business for 30 years.  He was a former member of the Union County Lions Club, and was a member of Trackrock Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Martha D. Paterson of the home; two sons, Judson Lee Paterson of Montana, and Thomas W. Paterson, of Clearmont, Florida; brother, Robert George Paterson of Stark, Florida; and sister, Jean Paterson Willis of Springfield, Massachusetts; grandsons, Daniel, Marcus, and Matthew Paterson also survive.

Memorial services were held Sunday, July 23, 2000 at 2 pm from Trackrock Baptist Church with Rev. Wade Plott officiating.

MR. LARRY JOSEPH HOLBROOK

 

Mr. Larry Joseph Holbrook, age 52, of Dillard Road, Blairsville, passed away on Tuesday, July 18, 2000 at his home following an extended illness.  Mr. Holbrook was born on September 24, 1947 in Union County, the son of the late Weldon Holbrook and Edith Walker Holbrook.  He was a lifelong resident of Union County and had attended Confidence Methodist Church.  He along with his wife, Linda, had owned and operated the Blue Ridge Pawn Shop since 1981.

Surviving Mr. Holbrook are his loving wife of thirty two years, Linda Rogers Holbrook of Blairsville; one daughter and son-in-law, Kimberly and Bryan Nix of Blairsville; mother, Edith Holbrook Wheeler of Blairsville; two sisters and brother-in-laws, Peggy and Roy Lawrence of Rex, GA, Linda and Dennis Bixby of Blairsville; two brothers and sister-in-laws, Randy and Pat Holbrook of Blairsville, Sammy and Mary Holbrook of Blairsville; one grandchild, Kolbe Joseph Nix of Blairsville; many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, July 20, 2000 at 2 pm from the funeral home chapel with the Rev. John Strickland, Rev. William Sisum and Rev. Vernon Davenport officiating.  Special music was presented by Greg Wiles, Sarah Kelley and Sherry parker.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers were: Bobby Joe Bright, Jr, Rodney Holbrook, Dustin Rogers, Gary Edwards, Wesley English and Doug English.  Serving as honorary pallbearers were: Melvin Tullis, Dover Hastings, Joey Henry, Ernest White, James Stuart, Harold Chapman, Carl Davenport, Ralph Morris, Randall Twiggs, Harold weeks, Roy Lawrence, and Rodney Weeks.  Interment followed in the Confidence Methodist Cemetery.
