REV. EMIL EDWARD KESSLER

 

Rev. Emil Edward Kessler, age 71, of Coffey Mtn. Rd., Blairsville, passed away on Tuesday in the Union General Hospital following a sudden illness.  Mr. Kessler was born on May 21, 1930, in Summit Co., Ohio, the son of the late Emil E. Kessler, Sr., and the late Violet Okerstrom Kessler.  He was a veteran of the US Army of the Korean War and after the war was in the 55th Army Band for the rest of his duty.  He was a member of the VFW in Homosassa, FL.  He was a very gifted pianist and was committed to witnessing and teaching the very end.  Rev. Kessler was a retired Baptist Minister with the First Baptist Church of Homosassee and at the time of his death was a member of the Antioch Baptist Church and was a member of the Jubiless Choir.

Surviving Mr. Kessler are his loving wife, Carolyn Kessler of Blairsville; five daughters and three son-in-laws:  Deborah and Buddy Hitchens of Clearwater, FL, Joy Waddington, Candace D. Mays, Cynthia and Paul Tew, Angela and Bart Vanderwerker, all of Inverness, FL; one sister and brother-in-law: Gloria and Louis Genest of Seminole, FL; two brothers and sisters-in-law: Paul and Fran Kessler of Beverly Hills, FL, Weyman Todd and Lee Kessler of Jacksonville, FL; five grandchildren, one great grandchild, many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, August 9, 2001 at 11 a.m. from the Antioch Baptist Church with Rev. George Cline officiating.  Special music was presented by the Jubiless Choir.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers:  Andy Anderson, Cecil Lance, Ray Roberts, Charles McClure, Pete Hill, Bill Drake, Jim Ackles and Jess Barrow.  Interment followed in the Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, FL.

MADELINE HELEN SMITH MAHONE

 

Madeline Helen Smith Mahone, born December 3, 1929, in Blairsville, GA, entered into rest July 15, 2001 at the age of 71 years.  She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 32 years, Maurice F. Mahone.  Madeline was a loving and devoted mother, sister, grandmother and friend, who will be greatly missed for the loving she gave unselfishly.  Mrs. Mahone is survived by daughters:  Jane Hatcher and husband Skip; and Rene Freeman; sons:  Brian Knezeak and wife Sally, Mark Knezeak and wife Kris; sisters: Evelyn Hogsed, Abby Little of Marietta, Maxine Jones of Blairsville; grandchildren:  Joel, Janelle, Shayna, Jaron, Holly, Lauren, Karen, Grant, Brian, Andy, Kimberly; numerous nieces and nephews.  The funeral services were held Wednesday, July 18, 2001 at 5:30 p.m. at Alamo Funeral Home with Pastor Tom Sexauer officiating.  Interment followed at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.  Arrangements with The Alamo Funeral Home of Brooklyn.

MRS. ETTA LEE RICH

 

Mrs. Etta Lee Rich, age 87, of Blairsville, GA, passed away Sunday, August 12, 2001, in Union General Hospital.

Mrs. Rich was born in Union County, on Oct. 2, 1913, a daughter of the late Ned and Minnie (Duvall) Chastain.  She was retired from the Union County School Lunchroom.  Mrs. Rich was a member of Faith Baptist Church.  She was preceded in death by her first husband, Fred Gray in 1954 and her son-in-law, Jimmy Kelley in 1998. 

Survivors include her husband, Fred Rich of Blairsville, GA; son and daughter-in-law, Joe and Julie Gray of Blairsville, GA; daughter, Susie Kelley of Blairsville, GA; step-son and daughter-in-law, Presley and Jennie Rich of Blairsville, GA; step-daughter and son-in-law, Kay and Charles Lewis of Oakwood, GA; step-daughter Shirley Rick of Oakwood, GA; brother and sister-in-law, Edward and Irene Chastain of Augusta, GA; eleven grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren; a number of nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, August 14, 2001, at 2 p.m., from the chapel of Cochran Funeral Home in Blairsville, with Rev. Tommy Seay, Rev. James Brock and Rev. Jerry Helton officiating.  Music was by the William Lee Family.  Pallbearers were:  Presley Rich, Charles Lewis, Alex Rich, Kevin Lewis and Christopher Lewis.  Interment was in Ivy Log Baptist Cemetery with Rev. Ben McGlamery.

MRS. HATTIE GRACE NIX FOWLER

 

Mrs. Hattie Grace Nix Fowler, age 97, of Gainesville Hwy. Blairsville who passed away on Sunday, August 12, 2001 at the home of her daughter, Sue Goines of blue Ridge Hwy.  Mrs. Fowler was born on November 20, 1903 in White County, the daughter of the late Elisha Andrew Nix and the late Mary Rebecca Etris Nix.  She had lived in Union County for the past forty eight years.  She was preceded in death by one son, Vernon Nathaniel Fowler in 1925 and her husband, Jessie (better known as J.O.) Olan Fowler in 1976.  Mrs. Fowler was a member of Faith Baptist Church. 

Surviving Mrs. Fowler are one son and daughter-in-law, Paul Andrew and Ruth Fowler of Knoxville, TN; two daughters and son-in-laws, Sarah Dorcas and Max Hardison of Decatur, Sue Grace and Henry Goines of Blairsville, eight grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, three great great grandchildren, many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday August 15, 2001 from the Faith Baptist Church with the Rev. Jim Brock officiating.  Special music was presented by the Faith Baptist Church Quartet and by Lisle Fowler.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers:  Jimmy, David, and Steven Goines, Jesse Hamler, Paul Hamler, and Brett Owenby.  Graveside services were held at 3 pm from the Providence Baptist Church Cemetery in Crabapple, GA.

MRS. MARY ELIZA MCDUFFIE FENDER

 

Mrs. Mary Eliza McDuffie Fender, age 67, of Garrett Rd., Blairsville, passed away on Friday, August 10, 2001 in the Union General Hospital following a sudden illness.  Mrs. Fender was born on April 19, 1934, in Atkinson County, GA, the daughter of the late Dennis McDuffie and the late Ema McGovern McDuffie.  Mrs. Fender was of the Baptist Faith.

Surviving Mrs. Fender are her loving husband, David Quitman Fender of Blairsville; one daughter, Cathy Sasnett of Pinetta, FL; three sons: Roger Fender of Bedford, TX, Ronnie Fender of Blairsville, and Johnny Fender of Jacksonville, FL; three sisters: Bunny Thigpen of Waycross, GA, Ruth Strickland of Blackshere and Marie Fender of Pearson; six grandchildren, many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, August 12, 2001 at 2 p.m. from the New Bethel Baptist Church in Pearson, GA.  Interment followed in the church cemetery.
