MR. JOHN WALLACE HARMON

 

Mr. John Wallace Harmon, age 45, of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away Thursday, August 17, 2000 in Union General Hospital in Blairsville following an extended illness.

Mr. Harmon was born on Saturday, February 5, 1955, a son of Marion Estelle Parrish Harmon and the late Claud Wilson Harmon, in Duval County, Florida.He had lived in the Blairsville area since 1983 moving here from St. Simonís Island, Georgia.Mr. Harmon was a member of Providence United Methodist Church.John was a journalist for the Atlanta Journal/Constitution, covering the Southern Appalachian Mountain Region for many years.He was active in Benton McKay Trail Club.At Providence United Methodist, he was a lay leader and Sunday School teacher.John was formerly employed by The Savannah Morning News and Brunswick News and The Florida Times-Union.

He is survived by his loving wife, Lisa Gibby Harmon, of the home; his mother, Marion Parrish Harmon of Gray, Georgia; his two sons, Walker and Wilson, of the home; sister, Claudia Harmon Schlottman, of St. Simonís and Macon; and brother, Paul Harmon, of Nevils, Georgia.Many friends and relatives also survive.

Memorial services are scheduled for Saturday, August 19 2000 at 2 p.m. from Providence United Methodist Church in Blairsville, with Rev. David Clay officiating. On Friday evening from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. there will be family gathering with friends.

MRS. Niner snedegar

 

Mrs. Niner Snedegar, age 66, of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away Thursday, August 17, 2000 at her home.

Mrs. Snedegar was born in Fannin County, Georgia on Sunday, December 3, 1933, a daughter of the late John Andrew Pickelsimer and Fannie Warren Pickelsimer.She has lived most of her life in Union County and was a member of Harmony Grove Baptist Church.Mrs. Snedegar was a homemaker and had been preceded in death by her husband, Keith Snedegar.

Surviving are tow sons, Glenn Pickelsimer and Timothy Snedegar, both of Blairsville; a sister, Bertie Davis, of Blairsville; three brothers: Estle, Earl and Arlin Pickelsimer, all of Blairsville; two grandchildren, Glenda and Melinda Pickelsimer; several nieces and nephews and other relatives also survive.

Funeral services were held Saturday, August 19, 2000 at 2 p.m. from the chapel of Cochran Funeral Home, with Rev. Harley Hunter, and Rev. Stacy Dyer officiating.Special music was presented by Ken and Elaine Young.Interment was in harmony Grove Baptist Church Cemetery with the following gentlemen serving as pallbearers: Larry Fisher, Freddy Collins, Jimmy Pickelsimer, Toby Collins, Junior Christy, and Kenneth Pickelsimer.

MRS. opal elliott burns

 

Mrs. Opal Elliott Burns, age 92, of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away Friday, August 18, 2000 in Union General Hospital in Blairsville.

Mrs. Burns was born in Union County, Georgia, on Friday, December 27, 1907, a daughter of the late James Elliott.She was a lifelong resident of this area and was a homemaker.Mrs. Burns was a member of Ivy Log Baptist Church.She has been preceded in death by her husband, Horace M. Burns, in 1974; a son, Neal Burns, in 1980 and a grandson, Robert N. Burns in 1989.

She is survived by sons and daughter-in-law, jack and Betty Burns, of Paso Robleo, California; and James and Jean Burns, of Blairsville; daughters and son-in-law, jean and Newell Johnson, of Blairsville; and Sherrell and George Schroeder, of Mocksville, North Carolina; two brothers, Buell Elliott, of Hiawassee, and Dale Elliott, of Blairsville; nine grandchildren also survive, along with numerous nieces and nephews and other relatives.

Funeral services were held Monday, August 21, 2000 at 2 p.m. from the Chapel of Cochran Funeral Home, with Rev. jerry Karnes officiating.The eulogy was presented by Bruce Johnson.Special music was presented by Ivy Log Baptist Church Choir.The following gentlemen served as pallbearers:Bruce Johnson, Steve Burns, Tim Burns, Ronny Ownby, Jim Elliott, and Elliott Hill.Interment was in Ivy Log Baptist Church Cemetery.

MR. JIMMY MCKINLEY QUEEN

 

Mr. Jimmy McKinley Queen, age 56, of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away, Sunday, August 13, 2000 in Union General Hospital in Blairsville.

Mr. Queen was born in Union County, Georgia on Tuesday, February 22, 1944, a son of the late Howard Mansfield Queen and Mary Reatha Hill Queen.He had lived in Tucker, Georgia for many years, but moved back to Union County 13 years ago.He was a member of Youngstown Baptist Church.Mr. Queen was a contributor to The Union County Historical Society, and contributed to all charities.

Survivors include three sisters: Charlene Turner, of Gainesville; Sue Nichols, of Smyrna; and Carol Dodd, of Gainesville; several nieces and nephews also survive, along with many friends.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, August 16, 2000 at 2 p.m. from the chapel of Cochran Funeral home with Rev. Guy Bradley, and Rev. Jerry Helton officiating.Special music was presented by Heath Slaton and Kyle Hatcher.The following gentlemen served as pallbearers:Terry Queen, Curtis Young, Jack Howington, Joe Dyer, Cecil Hill and Charles Hill.Interment was in The Queen Cemetery.

MRS. estelle deaver young

 

Mrs. Estelle Deaver Young, age 89, of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away Saturday, August 19, 2000, in Union County Nursing Home in Blairsville.

Mrs. Young was born in Graham County North Carolina, on Tuesday, August 23, 1910, a daughter of the late David Deyton and Mary Allen Deyton.She was a homemaker and had lived in this area for most of her life.She was a member of Liberty Baptist Church.Mrs. Young was preceded in death by her first husband, Henry N. Deaver, in 1946; and her second husband, Edward Young, in 1978.

She is survived by a daughter, Mary L. Partin, of Madison Heights, Michigan; daughter and son in law, Elosie D. and Vaughn England, of Blairsville; and son and daughter in law, Jimmy N. and Dean Deaver, of Blairsville; nine grandchildren, fifteen great grandchildren, and four great great grandchildren also survive, along with many friends.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, August 22, 2000 at 11 a.m. from the chapel of Cochran Funeral Home of Blairsville, with Rev. Guy Bradley and Rev. Stacy Dyer officiating.Special music was presented by Mrs. Gloria Griggs.†† The following grandsons served as pallbearers:Ryan England, Jeff Deaver, Doug England, Dwayne England, Darrell England, and Randy Partin.Interment was in Liberty Baptist Church Cemetery.
