grova allen

 

Mrs. Grova Allen, age 85, of Blairsville, passed away Tuesday, August 19, 2003 at Union General Hospital.

Mrs. Allen was a resident of this area for most of her life.  She was a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church.  Preceding her in death was a son, James Allen, in 1994, and her husband, Elgin Allen, in 1995.

Surviving is a son, Gerald Allen of Canton, GA; a daughter, Chris Cosby of Washington, GA; a daughter, Geraldine Roper of Woodstock, GA; a son, T.J. Allen and a daughter, Ellavee Payne, both of Blairsville.  Eighteen grandchildren and twenty great- grandchildren also survive.

Funeral services were held Friday, August 22, 2003 at 11:00 AM from the Chapel of Cochran Funeral Home in Blairsville with Rev. Michael Morrison officiating.  Music was provided by Annette McTaggert and Shelley Morrison

Serving as pallbearers were Tim Allen, Jay Allen, Randy Hampton, Michael Roper, Coy Dale Roper and Troy Miller.  Interment was in the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church Cemetery.

bessie l. baggett

 

Bessie L. Baggett, age 99, of Blairsville, passed away Thursday, August 21, 2003, at Union General Hospital.

Ms. Baggett was born in Henry County, GA., on October 31, 1903.  She was a bookkeeper for a Lincoln-Mercury dealership in Florida and a furniture company during her working years.

Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Willis E. and Peggy V. Baggett of Newnan; grandson and wife, Jim and Dee Baggett of Blairsville; two great-grandsons and four great-great grandsons.  Other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held in the Chapel of A.S. Turner and Sons Funeral Home in Decatur, GA., at 4:00 PM on Saturday, August 23, 2003.  Interment followed in the Decatur City Cemetery.

Cochran Funeral Home of Blairsville was in charge of local arrangements.

hazel hunter collins

 

Mrs. Hazel Hunter Collins, age 85, of Blairsville, passed away Thursday morning, August 21, 2003, in Union General Hospital.

Mrs. Collins was born March 14, 1918 in Union County.  A daughter of Hayes and Lydia Dyer Hunter.  She had lived in this area all of her life and taught school in the Union County School system for many years.

She was a member of the Choestoe Baptist Church, the Union County Retired Teachers Assn., the Blairsville Chapter-Order of the Eastern Star and had been very active in the Women’s Missionary Union.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Wayne Collins in 1981 and a brother, Howard Hunter.

Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Benny and Linda Collins and Barry and Connie Collins, of Blairsville; sisters, Irene Shuler, Blanche Swain and Doris Souther, all of Blairsville, Lucille Johnson, of Oak Ridge, TN and Mary Lou Walker, of Fayetteville, GA; brothers, Franklin B. Hunter of Blairsville and James Hunter of Warner Robbins, GA; grandchildren, Craig Collins and John Collins of Blairsville, Angie DeBord of Chickamauga, GA, Megan Henry of Dahlonega, GA and Hunter Collins of Blairsville; great-grandchildren, Lauren and Jake Collins and Reed DeBord also survive.

Funeral services were held Saturday, August 23, 2003 at 2:00 PM from the Chapel of Cochran Funeral Home in Blairsville with Rev. Bethel Buchanan, Rev. Danny Parris and Rev. Dick Stillwell officiating.  Music was provided by Nelson and Mildred LeCroy and Craig Collins.

Serving as Pallbearers were Craig Collins, Johnny Collins, Hunter Collins, Freddie Shuler, Clark Henry and Chris DeBord.  Interment was in the Choestoe Cemetery.

ethel e. wimpey

 

Mrs. Ethel E. Wimpey, 74, of Blairsville, passed away Tuesday, August 19, 2003 at Union General Hospital.

Mrs. Wimpey was born in Union County on October 7, 1828, a daughter of Fulmer F. and Bonnie Queen Everett.  She was a life long resident of the area and was of the Baptist faith.  Her husband, James Wimpey, preceded her in death in 1983.

Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, Frank and Linda Wimpey of Herndon, VA., and Dean and Marlene Wimpey of Blairsville; a daughter, Shelby Harkins of Blairsville; two brothers, Cecil Everett of Ft. Payne, AL., and Charles Everett of Blairsville; seven grandchildren: Justin Wimpey of Harrisonburg, VA., Jeremy and Joshua Wimpey, both of Herndon, VA., Harold Wimpey, Jennifer Wimpey and Dena Hutson, all of Blairsville and Gary Harkins of Macon, GA.  Other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held Thursday, August 21, 2003 at 2:00 PM from the Chapel of Cochran Funeral Home in Blairsville with Rev. Wade Plott and Rev. Phillip Baines officiating.  Music was by the Trackrock Quartet.

Serving as pallbearers were Justin Wimpey, Jeremy Wimpey, Harold Wimpey, Gary Harkins, Kevin Hutson and Kyle Everett.  Interment was in Union Memory Gardens Cemetery.

gertrude dye

 

Gertrude Dye, 88, of Blairsville, GA., formerly of Brasstown, died Tuesday, August 19, 2003, in a Blue Ridge, GA care facility.  A native of Union County, GA., she had moved to Clay County in 1979.  She was the daughter of the late Sam and Lilly Barns Dye.  She retired from John C. Campbell Folk School, where she worked for 11 years as a sander and finisher.

She was preceded in death by one grandson, Zendall Dye.

Surviving are a daughter, Charlene Gilbert of Young Harris, GA; a son, Robert Dye of Young Harris; two brothers, Verlin Dye of Raleigh, NC and Virgal Dye of Brasstown; six grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 11:00 AM on Friday, August 22, 2003 in the Chapel of Ivie Funeral Home, Murphy, NC.  The Rev. Jimmy Rogers and Horace Potts officiated.  Burial was in the Pinelog Methodist Cemetery.

Ivie Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
