MR. DENNIS J. GILBERT

 

Mr. Dennis J. Gilbert, age 47, of Fairview Road, Blairsville passed away on Sunday, August 19, 2001 in Union County from injuries received in an airplane accident.  Mr. Gilbert was born on March 4, 1954 in Murphy, NC the son of the late J. T. Gilbert and Carmen Loudermilk Gilbert.  Mr. Gilbert was co-owner of R&G Truss Company of Blairsville.  He was a member of A.O.P.A. and was also a member of The Harmony Grove Baptist Church.  He was preceded in death by his father, J.T. Gilbert in 1989; a daughter, Christina Gilbert in 1983; and his son Dee, who went with him to meet Jesus.

Surviving Mr. Gilbert are his loving wife, Hattie Nix Gilbert of Blairsville; one daughter, Holly Gilbert of Blairsville; mother, Carmen Gilbert of Murphy; one sister, Lynn Passmore of Blairsville; father and mother-in-law Eugene and Novalee Nix of Blairsville; many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, August 22, 2001 at 1:30 pm from the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Stacy Dyer and Rev. Eddie Cook officiating.  Special music was presented by The harmony Grove Church Choir.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers:  Junior Duckworth, Jason Cook, Danny Henson, Harold Thompson, Carson Owenby and Tony Giddens.  Interment followed in the Harmony Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.

MRS. ANNIE MAE BRADLEY

 

Mrs. Annie Mae Bradley, age 88, of Blairsville, GA passed away Saturday, August 25, 2001 following a period of declining health.  Mrs. Bradley was born in Union County the daughter of the late Jess and Annie Hullander Smith.  She was the widow of the late Newman Bradley.  She was a member of the Zion United Methodist Church.

Surviving are two sons William C. Bradley of Blairsville, GA, Neal R. Bradley of Gainesville, GA; two half brothers, three half sisters and a number of nieces, nephews and friends.

Funeral services were held Monday, August 27, 2001 from the Zion United Methodist Church with the Rev. Victory McVay and the Rev. Fred Whitley officiating.  Interment was in the Zion Cemetery.  Pallbearers were Steve Foster, Mike Stephens, James Neal, Robert Crisp, Garland Pike and Sam Nichols.  Honorary pallbearers were Ray Groves, Jack Robinson, and Tom McVay.  Banister Funeral Home of Hiawassee in charge of arrangements.

MR. DENNIS JOSEPH “DEE” GILBERT

 

Mr. Dennis Joseph (better known as Dee) Gilbert, age 17 of Fairview Road, Blairsville, passed away on Sunday, August 19, 2001 in Union County from injuries received in an airplane accident.  Dee was born on January 26, 1984 in Hall County, GA the son of the late Dennis J. Gilbert and Hattie Nix Gilbert.  Dee was a senior at Union County High School and was a member of the Harmony Grove Baptist Church.  He was preceded in death by his grandfather, J.T. Gilbert in 1989; a sister, Christina Gilbert in 1983; and his father Dennis, who went with him to meet Jesus.

Surviving Dee are his loving mother, Hattie Nix Gilbert of Blairsville; one sister, Holly Gilbert of Blairsville; paternal grandmother, Carmen Gilbert of Murphy, NC; maternal grandparents, Eugene and Novalee Nix of Blairsville; and also a very special friend, Sophia Ann Boucher of Blairsville; many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, August 22, 2001 at 1:30 pm from the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Stacy Dyer and Rev. Eddie Cook officiating.  Special music was presented by The Harmony Grove Baptist Church Choir.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers:  Kyle Odom, Anthony Orlando, Marshall Davis, A.J. Shook, Jesse Jorgensen, Garan Crawford, and Joseph Brooks.  Serving as honorary pallbearers were: Clay Whitener, Andrew Bradley, Trey Daniels, Isaac Ingram, Ryan Owenby and David Foster.  Interment followed in the Harmony Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.

MR. MAX C. OWENBY

 

Mr. Max C. Owenby, age 78, of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away Friday, August 24, 2001 in Union General Hospital in Blairsville.

Mr. Owenby was born in Fannin County, Georgia on Wednesday, September 6, 1922, a son of the late Wade Allen Owenby and Maude Harper Owenby.  He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, and served during World War II.  Mr. Owenby had been employed as an electrical engineer with the Gould Pump Company.  For many years, Mr. Owenby lived in the Stone Mountain, Georgia area, and was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Atlanta for 45 years.  Following retirement in 1992, he moved to Blairsville, where he joined First United Methodist Church of Union County.

            Survivors include his loving wife, Helen Wellborn Owenby, of Blairsville; daughter Janie Owenby Clark of Brunswick, Georgia; granddaughter Jennifer DeLoach; grandsons, Allen and Andrew DeLoach; many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held Sunday, August 26, 2001 at 3 pm from First United Methodist Church of Union County with Rev. Eddie Herring and Rev. Asbury Craft officiating. The eulogy was presented by Minister Terry Stuart.  Specially selected music was presented by Martha Cone, Jeff Baughman, and Keith DeFoor.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers:  Ray Parham, Jones Brewer, Hoyle Saye, Fred Parker, Charlie Easterling, Les Myers, Paul Colditz, and Jack Cathcart.  Interment was in Union memory Gardens Cemetery in Blairsville.

ELLEN H. ABBOTT

 

Ellen H. Abbott of Blairsville, Georgia passed away Monday, August 20, 2001 at the UT Medical Center in Knoxville, Tennessee.  She was preceded in death by her husband of 37 years, J. Danny Abbott, also of Blairsville, who passed away last October.  She was a member of the Coosa United Methodist Church in Blairsville.  Ellen was an active quilter in the North Georgia area, and she was active in many other craft activities as well.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Judy and Keith Kibbe of Knoxville, Tennessee; by her two granddaughters, Debby Winders of Maryville, TN and Valerie Priser of Hemet, CA; by her grandson-in-law Joe Winders; and by her four great grandsons Zane and Logan Winders of Maryville, TN and Bradley and Jason Priser of Hemet, CA.  Ellen is survived by two brothers and their families, John and Carl Hoglund of Rockford, IL and numerous nieces and nephews.  She is also survived by her step-son Dana Abbott of Katy, Texas, and by her step-daughter Linda Turcott of Canada.  Ellen leaves many friends and acquaintances.  She was well loved.

A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, August 29, 2001 at 2 pm at the Coosa United Methodist Church near Blairsville.  In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her name to the American Cancer Society.

MRS. CORA MARY SULLIVAN DILLS

 

Mrs. Cora Mary Sullivan Dills, age 70, of the Blue Ridge Hwy, Blairsville, passed away on Saturday, August 25, 2001 at her home following an extended illness.  Mrs. Dills was born on November 14, 1930 in Union County, the daughter of the Elbert Sullivan and the late Georgia Gillespie Sullivan.  She had worked for several years as a dietician with the Union County Nursing Home before her retirement.  She was a native and lifelong resident of Union County and was a member of the Confidence Methodist Church.

Surviving Mrs. Dills are her loving husband of fifty three years, Gentry Dills of Blairsville; one brother and sister-in-law, Dormas and Regina Sullivan of Blairsville, many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Monday, August 27, 2001 at 11 am from the funeral home chapel with Rev. John Strickland officiating.  Special music was presented by Dorothy Pickelsimer and Elaine Young.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers:  Richard Sullivan, Michael Sullivan, Leonard Dills, Vester Dills, James Dills and Junior Arrant.  Interment followed in the Liberty Hill Methodist Cemetery.
