JON WESLEY ENGLAND

 

Jon Wesley England, age 21, of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away Friday, September 7, 2001 in Union County, Georgia.

Wesley was born in Union County, on Sunday, July 13, 1980.  He was a lifelong resident of this area and was a graduate of Union County High School and was a member of Liberty Baptist Church.  Wesley had been preceded in death by a brother, Stephen, and his maternal grandparents, Jimmy and Madge Stephens.

Survivors include his mother, Linda Jones of Blairsville, his father, Doug England of Blairsville; step-father, Jimmy Jones of Blairsville; brother, Ryan of Blairsville; paternal grandparents, Vaughn and Eloise England of Blairsville; step-grandmother, Margaret Jones of Hayesville, NC, many friends and other relatives also survive.

Funeral services for Wesley were held Sunday, September 9, 2001 at 4 pm from the chapel of Cochran Funeral Home in Blairsville, with Rev. Brent Chatham and Rev. Evan Hughes officiating.  Specially selected music was presented by Craig Collins and Freddie Burrell.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers:  Cory Stephens, Justin Jones, Junior Taylor, Roger Cobb, John Hill, and Jason McCollum.  The following gentlemen served as honorary escort: Doug Colwell, Ernie Harkins and Cory Thomas.  Interment was in Liberty Baptist Church Cemetery.

MRS. MARY FRANCES “SUE” GRIZZLE RESTER

 

Mrs. Mary Frances “Susie” Grizzle Rester, age 56, of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away Friday, September 7, 2001 in Kindred Hospital in Atlanta, following an extended illness.

Mrs. Rester was born in Lumpkin County, Georgia, on Thursday, march 22, 1945, a daughter of the late Clifford Grizzle and Elsie Jarrard Grizzle.  She was a homemaker and a lifelong resident of Suches and Blairsville.  Mrs. Rester was a member of Corinth Baptist Church in Suches.

Survivors include three daughters, Christy Lynn Turnage of Franklinton, Louisiana; Susan Rae Lumpkin Bishop of Blairsville; and Jammie Wynette Rester of Blue Ridge, Georgia; brother, James Harold Grizzle of Canton, Ohio; four grandchildren, Shelly Dwight Turnage and Mickey Dwight Turnage, both of Franklinton, LA; Wesley Kevin Lumpkin of Blairsville; and Ami Nikkote Bishop, of Blairsville; two great grandchildren, Grace Louise Turnage, and Madison Jocelyn Turnage; a number of nieces, nephews, and other relatives also survive.

Funeral services were held Monday, September 10, 2001 at 2 pm from Corinth Baptist Church, with Rev. Horace Potts, Rev. Waymon Lovell, and Rev. Charles Reece officiating.  Special music was presented by Deborah Reese.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: J.M. Grizzle, Junior Warren, Johnny Cantrell, Aaron Turner, Garland Moose, and Richard Sfier.  Interment was in the church cemetery.

rICHARD WILLARD YOUNG

 

Richard W. Young, 63, the son of the late Frank and Delia Young, went to be with God on August 31, 2001.

He was born on February 10, 1938 in Blairsville, GA.  He came to NC in 1950.  He was the owner of Richard Young Timber Company, Inc., and was in the timber and logging business for 47 years.  He was a devoted and loving husband, father, father-in-law, grandfather, uncle and friend.

He was predeceased by three sisters, Nancy Louise Meadows, Mary Blanche Fincham, and Clara Jo Woodall; two brothers, James Elbert Young and Larry John Young; and a grandson, Robert Michael Joseph Young.

He is survived by his wife of forty-four years, Emma Ball Young; a son, Robert W. Young and wife, Cindy Young of Fuquay-Varina; a daughter, Rhonda Young Tilley and husband, Weldon Tilley of Wake Forest; a grandson, Joshua Morgan Young of Fuquay-Varina; and two granddaughters, Elyse Nicole and Alyson Brooke Tilley of Wake Forest.

He also has many special nieces; nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and great-great-nieces and nephews.  He also is blessed with many special cousins, sisters-in-law, and brothers-in-law.  Richard has many special friends, surrogate children and surrogate grandchildren.

He will be remembered by many as a very giving person with a smile that would light a whole room and the personality to make anybody laugh and smile.  He loved life, fishing, bowling and classic cars.

IN lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Home Health and Hospice Care, Inc., Kitty Askins Hospice Center, 2402 Wayne Memorial Drive, Goldsboro, NC 27534, a great organization that was a blessing to Richard and the family.

They can also be made to Richard’s church, Cokesbury United Methodist Church, 6678 River Toad, Fuquay-Varina, NC 27526 or any other organization that is special to your heart.

Funeral services were held Monday, September 3, 2001 at First Methodist Church, 402 N. Main Street, Fuquay-Varina at 2 pm.  Burial followed immediately at Cokesbury United Methodist Church Cemetery, 6678 River Road, Fuquay-Varina.

MR. HOKE SMITH REECE

 

Mr. Hoke Smith Reece, age 93, of Owltown Rd., Blairsville, passed away on Thursday, Sept. 6, 2001, at his home following an extended illness.  Mr. Reece was born on Dec. 26, 1907 in Union County, the son of the late James (Jim) Reece and the late Millie Lavonia Henson Reece.  Mr. Reece was a Union County native and was a brick mason by trade before his retirement.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Lillie Mae Burnett Reece in 2000; one daughter; Linda Reece; grandson; Rodney Hoke Wright; granddaughter; Terrie Sue Jenkins; daughter-in-law; Betty Reece; brothers:  John Franklin and Felton Reece; sisters: “Doll” Potts Hood, Fannie Bell Fortenberry, Alice Towe, Myrt Seabolt, Sarah Reece and Fleta Reece.  He was a member of the Shady Grove Methodist Church for over eighty-five years.

Surviving Mr. Reece are four sons and three daughters-in-law: Vernon Reece of Woodstock, Verlon and Irene Reece of Marietta, James and Brenda Reece of Marietta, Rex and Marcia Reece of Rome; four daughters and three sons-in-law: Everee and Bill Hamby of Adairsville, Sue and W.H. Wright of Ranger, GA, Bobbie and Bill Honaker of Blairsville, and Brenda Spiva of Lavonia; twenty-two grandchildren, forty-seven great grandchildren, many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, September 9, 2001, at 3 p.m. from the Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Bill Honaker and Rev. Bob Bone officiating.  Special music was presented by Nelson and Mildred Lecroy and Maria Farley.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Nick Jenkins, Kevin, Jeffrey, Mike and Stephen Reece, Chuck Honaker, Keith Hamby, Chris Spiva, Alan and Paxton Hamby, Brandon Reece, Byron and Jon Spiva.  Interment followed in the Shady Grove Methodist Cemetery.

MRS. MARIE LEDFORD HOGSED

 

Mrs. Marie Ledford Hogsed, age 69, of Blairsville, Georgia passed away Thursday, September 6, 2001 in Union General Hospital in Blairsville.

Mrs. Hogsed was born in Cherokee County, North Carolina on Wednesday, November 11, 1931, a daughter of the late Fred Ledford, Sr., and Cecil Chastain Ledford.  She was a homemaker and had lived in the Atlanta area for many years.  She was a member of Iron Hill Baptist Church in Acworth, Georgia.  In addition to her parents, Mrs. Hogsed had been preceded in death by a brother, Fred Ledford, Jr. who died in 1999.

Survivors include her husband, Herman Hogsed of Blairsville; daughter and son-in-law, Sandra Hogsed and Bill Carol of Southfield, Michigan; two sisters, Eula Buchanan of Commerce, George and Kate Twiggs, of Blairsville; brother, John Ledford, also of Blairsville; a grandson, Jonathon Carl, also survives, along with many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Sunday, September 9, 2001 at 2 pm from the chapel of Cochran Funeral Home in Blairsville, with Rev. Hoyt Brown and Rev. Tony Roberson officiating.  Special music was presented by The Faith Singers.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Charles Hogsed, Boyd Hogsed, Maynard Hogsed, Donnie Hogsed, Jimmy Buchanan and Randy Ledford.  Interment was in Union Memory Gardens Cemetery in Blairsville.

RUTH ADEL EICHHOLZ

 

Ruth Adel Eichholz, age 74, passed away August 10, 2001.  She was born in Columbus, Ohio and resided in Jacksonville, FL for three years, formerly of Blairsville, GA.  Mrs. Eichholz was a homemaker and a life member of the Order of Eastern Star.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl P. Eichholz in 1992.

Survivors include three sons, Kenneth P. and his wife, Pamela Queen Eichholz, R. David Eichholz and Billy and his wife, Mary Eichholz of Blairsville, GA; nine grandchildren and eight great grandchildren; a brother, Bill Calkins and a sister, Norma Jean Smith and her husband Jerry Smith.  Her remains will be buried along side her husband at Holly Hills Veterans Park Cemetery, Blairsville, Saturday, September 15th at 10 am.

MR. SAMUEL EUGENE MOORE, JR.

 

Mr. Samuel Eugene Moore, Jr., age 87, of Stonehenge, Murphy Hwy., Blairsville, passed away on Sunday morning, Sept. 9, 2001 at his home following an extended illness.  Mr. Moore was born on Sept. 24, 1913 in Toledo, OH, the son of the late Samuel E. Moore, Sr. and the late Anna Weber Moore.  He was preceded in death by two wives: Gertrude Dupper Moore in 1973 and Maud Wallen Moore in 1995; three brothers: Joe, Will and Harvey Moore; two sisters: Louella Cashel, Florence Mabrey; Grandson: Bryan Lowery.  Mr. Moore attended the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Murphy.

Surviving Mr. Moore are one daughter and son-in-law; Helen and Marvin Lowery of Murphy; one granddaughter; Michelle Lowery of Athens, TN; one great granddaughter; Jennifer Lowery of Tampa, FL; many other relatives and friends also survive.

Memorial services will be held on Sunday, September 16, 2001 at 4 p.m. from the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Murphy with Pastor Richard Perkins officiating.  Interment will follow in the Memorial Cemetery in St. Petersburg, FL  In lieu of flowers, if you wish, the family requests that memorials may be made to The Helping Hands Day Program P.O. Box 1346, Andrews, NC, 28901 in Mr. Moors’ memory.

LAFAYETTE BARRETT HOOPER TWIGGS

 

Faye Hooper Twiggs passed away on September 10, 2001, following a period of declining health.  Mrs. Twiggs was born in Hiawassee, GA, on June 1, 1910, the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. James L. Hooper, Sr.  She married Ralph J. Twiggs, Sr. of Hiawassee, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. V. Twiggs.  The Twiggs’ family moved to Blairsville in 1937.  Mrs. Twiggs owned and operated the first beauty shop in Blairsville from 1917 to 1944.  Mr. Twiggs owned and operated  Ralph Twiggs Motor Company from 1939 until his retirement in 1961.

Mrs. Twiggs was a member of First Baptist Church of Blairsville, joining in 1939.  She was a long time member of Blairsville Chapter #304, Order of the Eastern Star, receiving a lifetime membership certificate in 1976.  She became a member of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR) in 1965, and was for many years a member of the Atlanta Chapter, NSDAR.  In 1997, she became an organizing and charter member of the Old Unicoi Trail Chapter, NSDAR, in Young Harris, GA.

Surviving Mrs. Twiggs are her son, State Representative, Ralph J. Twiggs, Jr., of Hiawassee, daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Leon Davenport of Blairsville, sister, Sara Hooper Carswell of Seattle, Washington; granddaughter and husband, Cayce and David Friedly; grandson and wife, Ralph Douglas and Delia Davenport of Blairsville; grandson and wife Joseph and Havalyn Hensley of Atlanta; granddaughter and husband, Mary Elizabeth and Terry Wright of Hiawassee; granddaughter, Barbara Connice Twiggs of Hiawassee; great grandchildren, Patricia Taylor Hensley and Ralph Elliott Twiggs Hensley of Atlanta, sisters-in-law, Gladys C. Twiggs of young Harris and Mary R. Hooper of Hiawassee; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Mrs. Twiggs was preceded in death by her husband in 1973, and by her daughter-in-law, Lucille B. twigs, in 1999.

The funeral service was held Wednesday, September 12, 2001, at First Baptist Church of Blairsville.  Officiating were Rev. Danny parries and Rev. Troy Acree.  Music was provided by Terry Hooper.

The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Jimmy Hooper, Charles Jenkins, Larry Kimsey, Wally Moore, John Twiggs, and Larry Williams.  Serving as honorary pallbearers were: Logan Barrett, Carlton Colwell, George Gowder, M.D. Douglas Hedden, Ed Jenkins, Ray Rogers, Lamar Twiggs, and Randy Zimmerman.  Members of the Old Unicoi Trail Chapter, NSDAR served as honorary escorts.

Interment was in the Osborn Cemetery in Hiawassee, GA.  In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church of Blairsville Building Fund, P.O. Box 2058, Blairsville, GA 30514 or to the McConnell Baptist Church Youth Fund, P. O. Box 235, Hiawassee, GA 30546
