MRs. frances barbara brennan

 

Mrs. Frances Barbara Brennan, age 91, of Stonehenge Drive in Blairsville, GA., passed away on Friday, September 19, 2003, at her home following an extended illness.  Mrs. Brennan was born on February 19, 1912 in Newark, NJ., the daughter of the late Clyde Keene and the late Frances Corcoran Keene.  Mrs. Brennan was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church.

Surviving Mrs. Brennan are her loving husband, William Brennan of Blairsville, one daughter and son-in-law, Penny and Sterling Wise of Morganton, GA; four grand children, six great-grandchildren; many other relatives and friends also survive.

Memorial services will be held on Saturday, September 27, 2003 at 11:00 AM from St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church with Father Richard Wise officiating.  Interment  will follow in Holly Hills Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, if you wish, the family requests that memorials may be made in Mrs. Brennan’s memory to the Georgia Mountain Hospice, P.O. Box 580, Jasper, GA., 30143.

mary n. harkins

 

Mary N. Harkins, age 68, of Canton, GA., passed away Thursday, September 11, 2003.

Mrs. Harkins was born on August 27, 1935 in Union County, GA, a daughter of the late Norman and Edna Teague of Morganton, GA.  She had been a member of the Philadelphia Baptist Church in Union County for many years and was a homemaker.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Elbert Harkins and a brother, Ray Teague.

Surviving are a son, Tony Harkins of Canton; a daughter and son-in-law, Rieta and Rex Dobbins of Canton; a brother and sister-in-law, Larry and Debra Teague of Newborn, GA; a sister, Betty Jo King of Ackworth; a sister and brother-in-law, Claudine and Leon King of Morganton, GA; a sister and brother-in-law, Sherry and Dennis Gibbs of Mineral Bluff, GA; four grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held Sunday, September 14, 2003 at Sosebee Funeral Home in Canton with Rev. Doug Lusk officiating.  Interment was in Rolling Hills Memory Gardens.

state representative ralph twiggs

 

State Representative Ralph Twiggs, age 75, of Hiawassee, GA., passed away following a period of declining health.  He was born March 11, 1928 in Union County, GA., to the late Ralph J. Twiggs, Sr. and Faye Hooper Twiggs.

He is survived by daughter, Beth Wright of Young Harris, GA., Bobbie Twiggs of Hiawassee, GA., son, Joe Hensley of Atlanta, GA; sister, Barbara Davenport of Blairsville, GA; grandchildren, Terry Carter Wright, Ralph Elliot Twiggs Hensley, Patricia Taylor Hensley; a number of nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services were held Monday, September 22, 2003 at 3:00 PM from McConnell Baptist Church in Hiawassee, GA., with Dr. Rudy Patton and Rev. Troy Acree officiating.  Music was provided by Re. Rayburn Wilson.

Pallbearers were Jim Lamb, Charles Nicholson, Larry Williams, Carlton Colwell, Jeff Waldroup, Wesley Taylor, Ronnie Phillips, Ralph Nichols and Charlie Jenkins.  Honorary Pallbearers were all members of the General Assembly.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to The Towns County Child Development Center, c/o The Bank of Hiawassee, P.O. Box 68, Hiawassee, GA., 30546 and Rabun County Youth Center, P.O. Box 1545, Clayton, GA., 30525.

Mary call smith

 

Mrs. Mary Call Smith, age 87, of Blairsville, GA., passed away Monday, September 15, 2003 at her home.

Mrs. Smith was born Sunday, October 3, 1915, in Fulton County, GA., a daughter of the late Clarence W. and Ethel Walker Call.  She moved here 12 years ago from Decatur, GA., where she worked as a secretary at the Shrine Hospital in Atlanta.  She was preceded in death by her husband, William King Smith.

Surviving are tow sisters, Cathryn Medlock of Dawsonville, GA., and Elizabeth Philyaw of Altamonte Springs, FL.  Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services were held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, September 18, 2003 at the Blairsville First Baptist Church Chapel with Rev. Danny Parris officiating.  The eulogy was given by Mary Sue Moon and music was by Terry Hooper.

Graveside services and interment were at 3:30 PM in the Greenwood Cemetery in Atlanta, GA.  Serving as Pallbearers were Randall Medlock, Ralph Medlock, Ronald Medlock, Neal Moon, Doug Davenport and Jim Bass.

donna lynn hoyle

 

Ms. Donna Lynn Hoyle, age 46, of Blairsville, GA., passed away on Sunday, September 14, 2003 at her home.

Ms. Hoyle was born Saturday, March 23, 1957 in Cleveland County, NC, a daughter of Doris Wayne and the later Melvin Jones.  She had lived in this area most of her life and was of the Baptist faith.  She had been employed as a hospital aide.  Preceding her in death were her father, in 1965; her stepfather, Clifton Wayne, in 1990; a sister, Mary April Wayne, in 1970; and a son, Adam Hoyle, in 2001.

Surviving are her mother, Doris Wayne and a son, Craig Michael Wayne, both of Blairsville; a sister, Deborah Sewell of Nashville, TV; and a brother, John R. Jones of Pomona Park, Fl.

Memorial services were held at 6:00 PM Tuesday, September 16, 2003 at the First United Methodist Church Chapel with Rev. Eddie Herrin officiating.  Music was by Jeff Bauman.

roger dale guffey

 

Mr. Roger Dale Guffey, age 59, of School Street in Blairsville, passed away on Thursday, September 18, 2003, in Union General Hospital following an extended illness.  Mr. Guffey was born on Feb. 21, 1944 in Union County, the son of Marie Rich Guffey and the late George Guffey.  He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in the Viet Name war.  He was a native and lifelong resident of Union County.  Mr. Guffey was preceded in death by two sisters, Darlene Guffey and Diane Guffey.  Mr. Guffey was of the Methodist faith.

Surviving Mr. Guffey are his mother, Marie Rich Guffey of Blairsville and many other relatives and friends also survive.

Graveside servers were held on Sunday, September 21, 2003 at 1:00 PM from the Blairsville City Cemetery with the Rev. Waymon Lovell and Rev. Wofford Kelley officiating.  The following gentlemen served as Pallbearers, Chester Rogers, Mike Arnold, David Rich, Hubert Legg and Doug Chastain.  Military honors were conducted by the North Georgia Honor Guard.

Mr. C.J. Odom, age 79, of Loving Road, Morganton, GA., passed away on Saturday, September 20, 2003 at his home.

Mr. Odom was born in Cherokee County, NC., on Tuesday, September 9, 1924, a son of the late John Odom and Martha Walker Odom.  He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.  Mr. Odom was a farmer and a lifelong resident of this area.  He was a member of Zion Hill Baptist Church.  Mr. Odom had been preceded in death by his parents, John and Martha Odom; two brothers, Hoyte and Herman Odom; and grandson, Michael Young.

Surviving are his loving wife of 56 years, Katharean Thomas Odom, of the home; son and daughter-in-law, Ronnie and Brenda Odom, of Blairsville; daughter and son-in-law, Bonnie and Dean Dyer of Cleveland, GA; daughter and son-in-law, Charlotte and Tony Young, of Young Harris, GA; son and daughter-in-law, Robbie and Jackie Odom, of Blairsville; sister, Flossie Beaver, of Blairsville; nine grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and many friends also survive.

Funeral service was held on Tuesday, September 23, 3002 at 2:00 PM from the chapel of Cochran Funeral Home of Blairsville, with Rev. Ray Harper and Rev. Luther Thomas officiating.

Special music was presented by Luther Thomas and Daniel Nichols.  The following gentlemen served as Pallbearers: Jason Young, Jeff Young, Levi Odom, Michael Thomas, Kenneth Beaver, Jerry Beaver, Bobby Odom and Alfred Odom.  The following gentlemen served as honorary escort to the family: Bobby Beaver, Bob Timmers, Lee Robertson, Elbert Beaver, Donald Coggins, Jimmy King and Wayne Wilson.  Burial was held in Zion Hill Baptist Church Cemetery with Military graveside honors presented by North Georgia Honor Guard.

paul e. davidson

 

Mr. Paul E. Davidson, age 71, of Blairsville, Georgia passed away Friday, September 19, 2003 in Trident Medical Center in Charleston, South Carolina.

Mr. Davidson was born in Harlan County, Kentucky on Sunday, September 4, 1932, a son of the late Sessel Davidson and Maude Caine Davidson.  He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.  Mr. Davidson was a commercial electrician and a member of IBEW #613.  Paul and his wife had lived in Blairsville since 1984, moving here from Atlanta.  He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Blairsville, where he served as a deacon.  Mr. and Mrs. Davidson were active volunteers in missionary work.

Surviving are his loving wife, Dorthea Brothers Davidson of their home; daughter, Pamela Davidson Myers of Charleston, South Carolina; sister and brother-in-law, Carolyn June and George Humphries of Gadsden, Alabama; sisters, Sue Frances Kelley also of Gadsden, Linda Walker of Birmingham, Alabama, Patty Mayo of Gadsden, AL, sister-in-law and her husband, Maude and Tommy Reid of Cleveland, GA; brother-in-law and his wife, Clayton and Jane Brothers of Ellijay, GA; brother-in-law and his wife, Sid and Betty Brothers of Greenville, SC; sister-in-law and her husband Ruby and Ralph Jones of Blairsville; grandson, Matthew Davidson Myers of Charleston, SC; many nieces and nephews and others relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, September 23, 2003 at 11:30 a.m. from the First Baptist Church of Blairsville with Rev. Clayton Brothers, Rev. Sid Hopkins and Rev. R. Terry Hooper officiating.  Special music was presented by Jacob Craig on the bagpipes, Minister of Music Terry Hooper, Michelle Collins, Jackie Hill and Mignon Tucker.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Neil Moon, Lewis Jordan, Tom Starrett, Bill Lewis, Roy Bateman, and Carl Johnson.  Interment was in the Choestoe Cemetery in Blairsville.

In lieu of flowers, the family has suggested memorial contributions be made to Camp Laverne Griffin, native Alaskan Children’s Scholarship Fund, established at United Community Bank in Blairsville.

mr. james bruckner chase sr.

 

Mr. James Bruckner Chase, Sr. age 91 of Beale Court Drive, Blairsville passed away on Friday, September 19, 2003 at his home following an extended illness.

Mr. Chase was born on April 4, 1912 in Nashville, TN the son of the late Irvine Chase and the late Mattie Lee Chase.  He was a highly decorated veteran of the US Navy of WWII where he first served as Executive Officer, then as Commanding Officer, participating in North African operations, followed by amphibious landings of U.S.S. LST 379, invasions included Sicily 7/10/43, Salerno 9/9/943, Anzoo 1/22/43, Normandy France 6/6/44 palermo.  His citations included Battle Stars 5, Purple Hearts 3, Silver star, Bronze Star with Combat “V”, Navy Citation, August 1944.  His civic activities were family service of Memphis (V.P. Member Board Directors), Memphis Traffic Advisory Commission (Chairman), Memphis Chamber of Commerce (Skyline Committee), Reserve Officers Association of US (President Tennessee Department national V.P. Member National Council), Army Navy Club of Memphis (Founder and first President), Memphis Vanderbilt Alumni Association (President), Civic Research Committee (Chairman), Insurors of Memphis (President), Cotton Carnival Association (Member Board of Directors), Memphis Council, Navy Naval Reserve (Division Commander).  He was preceded in death by a son, James Chase Jr. in 1999, a grandson, Andrew Beacham in 2000.  Mr. Chase attended the Truett Memorial First Baptist Church.

Surviving are his loving wife, Maureen Chase of Blairsville; three daughters and one son-in-law, Eloise C. Taylor of Mobile, AL, Cheryl N. and Dr. Terry Doan of Young Harris, Judy N. Beacham, of Memphis, daughter-in-law, Barbara Ruth Chase of Memphis; nine grandchildren, Burt Taylor III of Mobile, Tammy Padilla of Denver, CO, James Chase III of Aptos, CA, Barbara Chase of Washington, DC, Pamela Grafton of Memphis, Evan Doan of Atlanta, Catherine Doan and Jessica Doan both of Young Harris, Leslie Jones of Memphis, many other relatives and friends also survive.

Memorial services were held on Sunday, September 21, 2003 at 3 p.m. from the Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Johnny Foster officiating.  Special music was presented by Johnny Foster, Dennis Myers, Dobbin Garret and Erika Walker.  In lieu of flowers if you wish, the family requests that memorials may be made to the D.A.V. or to the American heart Association in Mr. Chase’s memory.

donal mCFarlane

 

Mr. Donald McFarlane, age 84, of Blairsville, GA., passed away Sunday, September 14, 2003 at his home.

Mr. McFarlane was born in Scotland on Friday, August 22, 1919, a son of the late Donald and Annie Forbes McFarlane.  He lived most of his life in Chicago, moving here in 1995.  He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Blairsville and was a veteran of the British Army, serving in the Argyle and Southerland Islands.  Mr. McFarland was a carpenter before his retirement.

Surviving are his wife, Lucille McFarlane, of the home; sons, Gordon McFarlane of Three Oaks, MI, and Larry McFarlane of Chicago, IL; stepdaughter, Jo Anne Vanderberg of Bridgman, MI; sister, Molly Abraham of Oakville, Ontario, Canada; and four grandchildren, Ian McFarlane, Meghan McFarlane, Corrie McFarlane, and Kenny McFarlane.

Local services were held at 11L00 AM on Wednesday, September 17, 2003 from the chapel of Cochran Funeral Home in Blairsville with Rev. Eddie Herring officiating.  Music was by Jeff Bauman.

A memorial service was held at 2:00 PM on Friday, September 19, 2003 at the First Congregational Church, St. Joseph, MI.
