SCARBROUGH, Albert ~ On May 11, 1861, ALBERT enlisted in Co. E, 5th Georgia Infantry Regiment and served
until August 16, 1862. The muster roll of August 6, 1861 showed ALBERT as a nurse in the
hospital at Pensacola, Florida. He was discharged in 1862 as being over age; however, two
months later, on November 20, 1862, he re enlisted as a hospital steward with Co. C, 10th
Battalion, Georgia Infantry and served in that capacity until the end of the war. One muster
roll, for the period October 31, 1861 to April 30, 1862, shows ALBERT SCARBOROUGH
"absent-sent from Bethel Springs, sick by order of General MAXIE". Bethel Springs is
located in McNairy County, Tennessee very close to the scene of the battle of Shiloh
Church. That particular battle had been fought on the sixth and seventh of April 1862 and is
described as the greatest battle ever fought on American soil at that time. In two days
23,000 casualties were suffered-10,000 for the South, 13,000 for the North.
If ALBERT SCARBORUGH was assigned to a hospital in Bethel Springs at that time, it is
no wonder he fell ill. What other specific assignments ALBERT may have had is not
known; however, at the close of the war, he was captured at Jackson Hospital in Richmond,
Virginia with the fall of that city on April 3, 1865. His records show he was paroled on
April 16, 1865 to return home.

SHIRAH, Nathaniel Nicholas
He joined the Confederate Army in Columbus, Georgia in 1863. He was assigned to Company I, 64th Georgia Infantry. According to the Institute for Civil War Research, Middle Village, N.Y., the 64th Georgia Regiment took part in the following engagements:

Battle-Poplar Springs Church, Peeble's Farm, Pegram's Farm, Chappell House
and Laurel Hill, Va. Sept 29-Oct. 2, 1864
Boydton Plank Road (Hatcher's Run), Va. Oct. 27-28, 1864
Battle, Dadney's Mills, Hatcher's Run, Armstrong's Mill, Rowanty Creek, and
Vaughn Road, Va. Feb 2-7, 1865.
Appomattox Campaign March 28-April 9, 1865.
Nicholas Shirah returned to Macon County, Ga., after the war and resumed farming.
He drew a Confederate Pension from the State of Georgia until his death in
1908.
