His Body was returned to the United States in February of 1949, Burial at the Dry Pond Methodist Church Cemetery, Jackson County, Georgia. Submitted by James Lord, Sep 2002 WILLIAMS, Samuel Belk, Jr. Born 20 Jul 1920 Atlanta Fulton GA Died 6 Jun 1944 in Normandy France. He is buried at the Normandy American Cemetery in St. Laurent France. U. S. Army Air Corp. 1st Lt. Pilot of C-47 in the 304 Squadron, 442 Troup Carrier Group. He was awarded the Air Medal, Purple Heart, Presidential Unit Citation along with the Europe-Africa-Mid Eastern theatre ribbon. At the time of his death, he was the pilot of a C-47 carrying either paratroops or pulling gliders. Flew low over Normandy Beach and plane was hit by ground fire and unable to pull up.
