If you have visited very many of the Georgia
counties, on the GAGenWeb sites, you could not help, but to have noticed the
name "Barbara Walker Winge," you have probably wondered just who this
woman is. She has generously contributed material to so many Georgia counties.
I thought it would be nice to share a
brief look into the background of this amazing lady.
Barbara is from Waycross, Georgia. She even
married her childhood sweetheart from Waycross. They spent 20 years in the Air
Force and lived in many States and Alberta, Canada. She collects postcards, War
Between the States plates and saves newspaper clippings (only) from Waycross,
GA. Barbara said she has acquired a wonderful Genealogical Library, for she has
been interested in the "Genealogy game," all her life. Her
Daddy's first cousin Christine Aitcheson of Waycross instilled the love for
Family History in Barbara when she was only a child. The family laughed at
Christine because she "liked dead people."
Barbara attended the Institute for Historical and
Genealogical Research at Sanford University, in Birmingham, AL, for 13 summers.
She had the letters "CGRS" [Certified Genealogical Record Researcher]
attached to her name for 5 years. She was the book review editor for the
Association of Professional Genealogists for one yr. She was also the Local
History Room Librarian at the Bay County Public Library in Panama City, FL,
until her retirement in 1999.
She was a member of the Children of the American
Revolution, the Children of the Confederacy, and was a page to the State
Convention in Waycross, ca 1947. She is presently a member of the St. Andrew Bay
Chaper, NSDAR, Confederate Salt Works Chapter, U.D.C., and many other
genealogical societies. She works with P.A.W.S., Pets Are Working Saints, and
visits local nursing homes and schools with some of her dogs.
And Barbara loves dogs, received her own first
puppy at age six. It is in the genes. She has shown and trained dogs for many
years. She now has six Pomeranians and an American Eskimo. One of her Poms,
Aries, recently won a trip to New York City in November for ten days to compete
with six other winners in the Advantage No-Fleas Fast-Friends Duet Contest. They
appeared on "Live With Regis and Kelley" and the "Today
Show." Barbara likes to say now that she went to Julliard School of Music
as the school is right next to the Lincoln Art Center where the contest was
held, and she and Aries walked over there. |
