BLACK HISTORY MONTH POSTER CONTEST: The theme this year for Walker County Schools was African American visual artists. Chattanooga Valley, LaFayette and Rossville middle schools participated in the contest. A student at each school was eligible for First ($75 gift certificate), second ($50 gift certificate) and third ($25 gift certificate) place prizes. A Grand Prize ($100 gift certificate) is also presented. (See "News" for 2005 winners!)
HISTORICAL PRESERVATION: WCAAHAA continues to work with Chickamauga Masonic Lodge No.221 in preservation of its building, one of only two Masonic Lodges on the Georgia Historic Registry, and up for nomination for the National Historic Registry.
WCAAHAA is also in partnership with the Marsh House Task Force to preserve the African American heritage of the Marsh-Warthen-Clement House of LaFayette Georgia, which is presently on the National Historic Register.
The association is working with Walker County government in preserving the abandoned Lytle Cemetery and working with the descendents of those buried in the Mount Joy Cemetery in preserving the Mount Joy Cemetery in Chattooga County. The Mount Joy Cemetery coordinator is James Lester.
SCHOLARSHIPS AND AWARDS:
In April and May, the E.D. Ward Scholarships and the Fonnie May Porter Highest GPA Academic Awards are pesented to winning graduating seniors of Ridgeland and LaFayette High Schools. The award coordinator is Donna McLin-Walker. (See "News" for 2005 winners!)
