HOWARD posted by Louise Byrd on Friday, September 18, 1998

Does anyoe have information on Howards from Wilkes County? References in the Wilkes County Papers include: p. 117-118: "the trustee for the poor school funds to Wm. S. Howard for poor children of the 180 and 181 districts (1829) tuition as follows . . . 181 district . . . Wm. S. Howard's children: Nimrod N. Howard age 12 Tilmon W. Howard age 10 . . ." Then in 1830 - - William S. Howard's children: Nimrod N. Howard age 12, Tilmon W. Howard age 10. Page 122: (1831) Nimrod N. Howard age 14, Tilmon W. Howard age 12, Martha E. Howard age 9, Mary H. Howard age 9. This is the earliest record I can find of the three brothers and their father. A cousin has Tillman Nimrod Howard, 1729-1797 m. Mary Louise Long, 1732-1822; then Judge Nimrod Nelson Howard, 1789-1859 m. Mary Elizabeth House, 1780-1842; then she has Dr. Thomas Howard, 1817-1884 m. Fannie Murphy 1821-1897; Judge Walter Murphy Howard 1866 -1925 m. Martha Regina Rummel 1867-1937, etc. I know there are discrepancies in this listing, however, I assume that Tillman Nimrod Howard is actually the father of William S. Howard, who is the father of Nimrod Nelson, Tilmon (Tillman) W. and William S. Howard, along with twin daughters, Mary and Martha. Nimrod Nelson is my 3rd Gr Grandfather. I have no record of his birth or any confirmation of his father's birth, or grandfather's, much less the location. William S. occurs in Wilkes County in 1830 census, which corresponds with school records. The 1840 census contains many William Howards and is ambiguous. The 1850 census has Nimrod, Tillman, and William S. Howard in Muscogee County in the McNaughton District, which in 1854 became part of Chattahoochee County.
