I am seeking any information I can get on the elusive family of Winwright (or Winright or Wainwright) and Rachel Lawson who lived in Wilkes County, GA, and moved to Putnam County, GA about 1805 – 1810. I believe they are my ggg grandparents. They had about 7 children: a. Four of their children were still minors when Winright died in about 1821, since guardians had to be appointed for them. These four children were Pleasant Lawson, William S. Lawson, Rachel Lawson, and Thomas R. Lawson. b. The settlement papers on Winwright’s estate, which are located in the Putnam County courthouse in Eatonton, GA, indicate that there were older daughters who had already married at the time of their father’s death: Sarah (who married a Martin), a daughter who married John R. Russell, and another daughter who married James Conner. Winright Lawson was possibly the third of eight brothers: Adam, Alfred, Wainright (or Winright), Shelton, Brooks, Reuben, William, and David. There is an item in an old publication (Historical Collections of the Habersham Chapter, DAR, Vol II, 1902) in which the author requests information on the descendants of these eight brothers. The author, who is not identified, states that the youngest brother, David Lawson, was his/her grandfather. Records confirm the presence of some of these other brothers in the Wilkes County area. Adam Lawson served as a temporary guardian for Winright’s minor children following his death. Adam and “Wynright” Lawson both were listed in the 1805 Georgia land lottery for Wilkes County. A Shelton Lawson is reported to have married Elizabeth Wellborn in Wilkes County in April 1823. A William Lawson is listed along with Adam and “Wright” Lawson in the 1809-1811 Georgia tax digests for Wilkes County. There is an IGI Index 4.00 entry for Winright and Adam Lawson which report that they were born in Wilkes County in the 1760’s and their parents were William and Elizabeth Lawson; however I do not know the source of this information. The maiden name of Rachel, Winright Lawson’s wife, may have been Robertson. Winright Lawson is listed as receiving a distributive share of the estate of Thomas Robertson, deceased, in GA 1812. Rachel died by 1827, as her estate was appraised in May of that year, and Pleasant A. Lawson was appointed substitute guardian for minor’s William S. and Rachel (jr) Lawson that year. I am almost positive that my line comes through Winright and Rachel Lawson’s son William S. Lawson. His name, initial, age and birth area match my gg grandfather William Sanders Lawson, born in Putnam County, GA, in 1810. He married Harriett McDaniel in 1839 and they raised their family in Meriwether County, GA. I would appreciate any assistance in learning more about the family or parents of Winright or Rachel Lawson of Wilkes/Putnam County, GA.

My family legend is that two Thornton brothers migrated from the "Athens GA" area to Pasquotank Co., North Carolina (circa 1800-1810). My research establishes a documented line to a William Thornton (b.abt 1780-85, d. 1835), a land owner in Pasquotank Co. in 1812, with a James Thornton as witness to the deed. William was the first Thornton to settle in Pasquotank Co. and probably entered the area and was married to a local girl, Wilkey Harris, before 1812. Searching for family links probably in early Wilkes Co.

I am trying to find out when Thomas Jones, my ggggrandfather, first came to the Long Creek area of Wilkes (later Warren) County. By the time of the 1793 Tax list he owned 150 acres joining Winfrey. He was an original member of the Long Creek Baptist Church, established in 1786. Sometime between 1801 and 1803 Thomas and Benjamin Jones and Nathan Fowler moved from Warren to Jackson County. I would like any information on Benjamin & wife Martha_____ CARTER who moved from Laurens Co., SC, about 1795? They lived in the area of Wilkes Co., that later became Lincoln Co. It is thought that Benj., b. between 1732 and 1745 in Frederick Co. VA, moved to Laurens Co., SC, after Rev. War, and then to Wilkes/Lincoln Co., GA, had sons Joel, John (1780-1858), Samuel (1783), Abner (1785), Stephen-all born SC. Or possibly his son was a John CARTER (Sr.), who had sons by these names & dates. This family was related to the WEATHERs & possibly GRAYS who were also from Laurens SC. It is believed that John CARTER b. abt. 1780 SC married Zilph BENSON in Lincoln Co. records 1808. These names all appear in the 1805 & 1807 land lotteries-several won land in Wilkinson Co. in 1807. They are showed as tax defaulters in 1807 in Lincoln Co-probably because they had moved to Wilkinson-soon to become Twiggs co. John is later found in Twiggs Co. tax digest for 1818 in the same district as Joseph BENSON, and the above listed CARTERs. This family is in Crawford Co. 1820's to 1854. They then move to Pike Co., AL.
