I am searching for information on my gggggrandfather Christopher Phenis who came to America about 1778 and settled in Wilkes County Georgia. He is listed in a book entitled Early Records of Georgia - Wilkes County Georgia. Under Wilkes County Geogia Minutes of Inferior Court in 1798 Christopher is listed as deceased and his three children George, Soloman (born abt. 1786), and Esther are listed as orphans. Frederick Heisler (also listed as Frederick Keider) is appointed guardian to the children and administrator of the estate. He was to sell 130 acres of land on Fishing Creek owned by Christopher. In 1799 Soloman is bound out to Abraham Tanner to learn the trade of black smith. Esther is bound out to David Simons. The name of the family is spelled four different ways in the court records, Phenis/Pheanis/Phoenis/and Phanes. Phenis is the most consistent spelling over the past two hundred years. It is believed through family lore that Christopher was a Hession soldier who was impressed by the British and later deserted and fought on the American side. Soloman and George both migrated north to Ohio and Indiana. Soloman was in Preble County, Oh. in between 1812 and 1814. He married Elizabeth Hammond 3/15/1814 this was his second marriage. The identity of his 1st wife is unknown. George married Hannah Hammond. This may have been Elizabeth's sister. Esther married Christopher Poss. Any information on this family or advise on how I might go about tracing them would be appreciated.
